Product Description

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

From the makers of the immensely popular LEGO The Lord of the Rings, comes LEGO The Hobbit, inspired by the first two films in The Hobbit Trilogy: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the upcoming The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) as well as the collection of LEGO The Hobbit constructions sets. The interactive game of LEGO The Hobbit allows gamers to play along their favorite scenes from the films and follows the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he is recruited by the Wizard Gandalf to aid Thorin Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves. Bilbo leaves the comforts of the Shire on a journey through Middle-earth to help the Dwarves reclaim their lost Kingdom of Erebor within the Lonely Mountain. Along the way, he is introduced to ravenous Trolls, dangerous Orcs and, of course, Gollum and his precious Ring. Players will utilize and combine the Dwarves' unique abilities - often with hilarious results - to solve the most diverse Quests of any LEGO videogame to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bigger and Better April 10, 2014
By Jay Jay
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS
This game is a big improvement over the last two. I know a lot of people didn't like the mission breakdown of Lego Marvel and Lego Movie. This game is laid out a little differently. The gold brick challenges still exist but this time, they show you all 10 BEFORE you begin the level, so you have an idea of what you need to collect. Also, it's no longer laid out where you just click on the level and start the mission from the main screen. Now it's an overworld hub with your character on a map and must travel between locations via paths. You can't walk freely on the map but you can walk along any paths on the map, which grows and unlocks more as you proceed through the levels. Gold brick paths are for the story and the blue brick paths are for side quests, shops ect. Some side quests require specific tools or specific characters.

Some other tidbits
-Levels are bigger and allow characters to fully explore the environment for collecting.
-Free jump is NOT in this game, it's an automatic jump when you're near platforms and edges.
-Full voice acted and subtitled cutscenes and in-level commentary.
-Normal Lego animation. Not the stop motion looking animation from Lego Movie.
-Switching between multiple characters to complete levels that will be displayed on the bottom screen (up to 8 characters shown at once)
-Shops allow you to buy characters, red bricks and equipment.
-The usual lego building. Switches can be activated using the touch screen or circle pad.
-Brings back some of the special building that was in Lego the movie but without the blueprints. Fairly simple and usually only requires swiping the touch screen.

As always of course, if you want the most complete experience you should get the console version.

I used to LOVE the Lego games on the 3DS platform. Starting with Lego Marvel, they went to timed levels and I lost interest. Lego City undercover was the last game I really enjoyed.

Lego Hobbit does not have timed levels, but it awards a lego brick for meeting the gold or silver times - so that is an improvement.

I also found the overworld to be less than intuitive . I made it to the end on story mode, and now I am starting to lose interest.

I wish they would stop trying to "improve" the lego games for this platform and stick to what worked!

5.0 out of 5 stars The kids Really Enjoy it May 12, 2014
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS|Verified Purchase
I was apprehensive that this would be like the recent stripped down Lego games.
I was so happily surprised that not only that but Lego has improved upon their old format and the Kid's really enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Older player May 6, 2014

I'm a 50+ year old that loves the Lego games to stimulate my mind. This one was very good with graphics but I like the older style Lego that didn't have timed experiences to get to the end. Guess I'm just not that fast any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars LEGO The Hobbit October 23, 2014
By A Customer
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS
LEGO The Hobbit was a game I really enjoyed, quite a bit more than I expected to and after having read other reviews which at first I didn't know what people meant by "change the format" when relating to other LEGO video games, it now makes sense because some of the earlier LEGO games were made only for the DS format which makes sense Nintendo has discontinued the older Nintendo DS products

LEGO The Hobbit this game is a lot of fun and is well worth the price. I like how it's not completely open world but its a map and as you get more materials and so forth you can go from place to place. Theres side quests and so forth which are fun too. Also one Reviewer mentioned this so I will mention these as well:

-Levels appear to be bigger and allow characters to fully explore the environment for collecting.
-Free jump is NOT in this game, it's an automatic jump when you're near platforms and edges.
-Full voice acting and subtitled cutscenes and in-level commentary.
-Switching between multiple characters to complete levels that will be displayed on the bottom screen (up to 8 characters shown at once)
-Shops allow you to buy characters, red bricks and equipment.
-Switches can be activated using the stylus on the touch screen or the circle pad.
-Building is faster at least from what I notice in this game then in other DS games due to improved CPU on the 3DS XL and is fairly simple and usually only requires swiping the touch screen.
I remember seeing the first two movies and can't wait for the third, I will for sure get the game that has the final chapter of this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lego does not disappoint February 10, 2015
By J B
Platform for Display:Nintendo 3DS|Verified Purchase
Let me be upfront and say that the Lego games for console systems are some of my all time favorite games. The replay value alone makes them worth the buy as there is so much to come back to after beating the initial story mode. I loved the Lego Lord of the Rings game for the Wii and purchased this 3DS version because I had yet to buy a Wii U. This game is very fun but has a totally different gameplay experience than it's console sibling. It's definitely worth playing but it's a bit more simple than I expected. The graphics were what I expected and the levels were fun as usual. Obviously a handheld version can't always pack the punch of the console but as expected Lego does not disappoint. As far as the 3D aspect is concerned I'm not a big fan of playing with the 3D turned on. It was just as fun in 2D. If you are a fan of the Lego video game franchise this is a definite buy.
