79000 Riddles for the Ring was initially released in late November of 2012 with a LEGO store price of $9.99. It is one of the least expensive non-exclusive sets in the new Hobbit line, as well as currently being the least expensive in the combined Hobbit/Lord of the Rings LEGO series (though it will no doubt be marked up in the extreme within a year). It contains two minifigures (Bilbo Baggins and Gollum), The Ring, the sword Sting, a fish, a small boat/canoe, and a small rock cave/hiding place that opens. The brick count is 102 pieces overall, but many of those are small (including single bones and 1x1 sloping plates).

This is the impulse buy set of the current releases, and it fills that job perfectly. It re-creates one of the most memorable scenes in the book/first Hobbit movie, contains characters that span both epics (The Hobbit and LotR), includes *THE RING*, and has a nice little background cave piece that can be opened/moved. It works as a stocking stuffer, impulse buy for casual fans of the movie, iconic desk conversation piece (not to mention paper weight in the case of the cave), and just generally cool toy. For LEGO fans that like to take things apart, the pieces from the cave can be used with many other sets (including 79010 The Goblin King Battle and 9473 The Mines of Moria) or just to free-build. If you get lucky with this purchase, you may even find an extra ring or sword included (I found two rings in my set, allowing Gollum and Bilbo to both have one and become friends in my brick version of the drama).

I do have a warning/concern about this set. If you have already purchased or intend to purchase both LEGO set 9470 Shelob Attacks and set 79004 Barrel Escape, you already essentially have both of the minifigures.

This is a cheap $10 set for the Hobbit that is a must have for your Hobbit/Lego collection. Its simple and the price cant be beat. This set is based on the Riddles in the Dark scene from the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It comes with two main pieces, the rock structure, and Gollum's boat. It comes with two minifigures, Bilbo and Gollum. This Gollum is the same mold as can be found in the LotR Shelob set, but the facial expression is slightly different.

I really liked the rock structure, it has that PJ's middle earth look to it, a really nice contour shape. It has 3 moveable parts, the front of the rock structure can swing open to reveal an opening and a little lever can be rotated to reveal the one ring. In fact, this set comes not only with gold ring, but three, which is nice.

The set also comes with some bone pieces, and a fish for Gollum. Bilbo comes with his sting sword.

Overall I liked this set a lot, it was easy and fun to build, and came with 105 pieces.

My only gripe was I wish the boat looked more like a boat, it looks more like a weird lego piece. Maybe if it came with an oar or a couple of smooth pieces would have helped it.

Perhaps my favorite thing is, if you wanted to, you could connect the little rock structure that came with the LotR Shelob set to the rock structure in this set to create one bigger rock piece. It looks very consistent!

Check out my customer photos to see this!

Overall, this is a no-brainer set to get if youre a lego Hobbit/LotR fan. Its cheap and its a fun little set for your collection.

This Hobbit Lego kit is small and relatively simple, but with some of the gears and moving parts, I can see why they say 8-14. Some younger kids would be frustrated putting it together. My 11 year old and I didn't have any trouble. I love the simplicity of the design. Like many Lego kits, it has a higher level of detail than you might imagine would be possible with simple interlocking blocks. A cool, quick build for fans of The Hobbit.

This is a well made, well thought out set, and a wonderful add to my Tolkien/LEGO collection.

There are two rings, in case one is lost. Bilbo has two faces, a scared face and a determined one.

My only wish, would be for the short characters to be able to sit, but I understand why they cannot.

Great LOTR Set. I only but the smaller sets now because my son mostly just wants the characters. Decently priced for Lego's.

This is great to act out the scene, and at Tenbucks, the price is reasonable. Both Bilbo and Gollum can wear the ring. Good scenery, a hidden copm[partment, a boat, and Sting the knife. Bilbo has two faces for emotions. COol.

My eleven years old grandson enjoys putting together all the parts. He is a fan of the Hobbit series and is always happy to receive a new one.
