LEGO The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3920

From the Manufacturer

A buildable and fun twist on a memory game for 2 to 4 players. The game is all about finding the missing Dwarves who have gotten lost in Hobbiton, using hints left by Gandalf the Grey and some Hobbits to help you search. If you are up to the challenge you can transform the board during the game, testing your memory skills to the max. Once the board is built it is easy to store and quick to take out to play again.

This game takes place in the The Shire in Middle Earth, the setting for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This particular game focuses on the characters of The Hobbit, and plays a lot like the game Memory. A few points:

1. The four microfigures that come with game are: Gandalf the Grey, Kili the Dwarf, Fili the Dwarf and Dwalin the Dwarf. They are great, but those hoping for a Bilbo figure might be disappointed.
2. You start by putting together Lego pieces to build the board. Fun for the Lego builder in you, but be aware that you'll need to take the time to do this before you start actually playing the game.
3. The board is configurable, with pivot points along the board that can make it square as shown on the box, rectangular, or L-shaped.
4. The game is configurable as well, with different variations spelled out in the instruction book.
5. Each game takes about 15-20 minutes.

My 7-year old daughter liked the Hobbit book and The Lord do the Rings movie. She also liked assembling the set. However she got bored with the game after 2 plays. We ended up selling the game off. Its a basic memory game, with a high degree of luck added in. I don't think they spent a lot of time on game design. If your family doesn't mind simple games such as Candyland and Memory, then you might like this set. However if your family likes to play children's games meant to appeal to both adults as well as kids (Amazing Labyrinth, Whoowasit, Viva Topo, Hey that's My Fish), then this will not impress you. We replaced this with the Hobbit playset, the Unexpected Gathering, which is much more better for free play, making up and acting out stories, after the set is complete.

I bought this for my grandson who is ten years old. We play this game each weekend he is over and even pick up from previous weekend games. It's fun and can keep the interest of anyone.

If your child loves legos and the Lord of the Rings you will love this one, too. My grandsons 12 and 13 love both so it is a big hit.

The legomaniac in my life loved building the board ... and then playing the game. The age rating was right on target.

Lego is quality! All the pieces were there as well as a couple extras just in case. The game is simple but fun. My husband and I are both big Hobbit fans so this game was a hoot for us. Can't wait til my boys are old enough to play too. This will be a great family game!

I love lego. I love board games. But the two together have not really worked well. This game is different. It is a little childish (essentially an advanced memory game), but it is also very fun, and there is strategy involved. The set is really great, with fun little details for each Hobbit hole. The rules of the game are simple, yet entertaining. (That being said, the rules could be written a little more clearly). And here's a suggestion: a lot of people want to play Gandalf as he is unique among the pieces. So make his player piece a reward for game set-up and winning.

My son and husband have had a blast with this set. The difficulty level is easy, so it may not be great for kids who are out of the toddler phase.
