The stainless titanium coated nose and blade housing provides extended life over most every other fixed blade knife. For those of you who use utility knives every day, you know how fast the notches that hold the blade tight wear out. Lenox solved that with the stainless insert that is much harder and more durable than the aluminum alloy. And since it is only strengthened where it needs to be the knife remains incredibly lightweight. The quick change mechanism works flawlessly - a no frills hinge on the bottom and a finger turn screw to fasten the 2 halves together.

Update 4/11/08:
Yesterday I discovered that the pins made of what appears to be aluminum alloy that hold the titanium head on have broken seperating the head from the body and rendering the knife almost useless - I may try to repair with some epoxy or glue of some sort. Another problem that I have found is that the notches that hold the blade are not deep enough and found that the blade would come out occasionally. A very good attempt but unfortunately I will have to withdraw my positive review of this knife.

A wonderful utility knife, definitely the best one I've ever used/owned. It has a hinged design which includes tool-less opening; just depress the button and it'll pop open (but enough force is required that you won't accidentally open it during use), and you can get to the 5-blade storage compartment inside. The blades are kept from moving around by means of a clip. There is also a magnet in the active blade holder, which ensures that changing blades will always go smoothly. It comes with 3 of the Lenox Gold utility blades.

The all-metal construction (no plastic parts, even inside) means it'll last for a very long time. Also, I've seen absolutely no "sticking" with the retracting button, which is rare as most utility knives I've used will occasionally "stick", even reputable brands like Stanley. Additionally, the single-piece nose design contributes to the overall life of the tool, because you can be as rough as you want with the tool and the halves won't separate at the nose like with other utility knives.

Thirdly, the SSRK1 features a quick-change blade feature where extending the blade and then pressing the retraction button to the side will allow you to replace or flip the blade quickly and easily.

Finally, people with hands of all sizes should find the grip comfortable, and the balance is excellent; it feels like the SSRK1 is custom-made just for your hand.

As a carpenter working in remodeling I didn't realize how often I reached for my utility knife until I had a crappy one sitting in my pouch. I'd gone through all the "quick change" models and was always disappointed when the mechanism wore out and i was constantly losing blades. This knife feels great in your hand and the engineering is outstanding. Lenox finally got it right. It is a more expensive investment but is well worth it.

The Lenox Gold blades included are awesome as well!

The latest version of the SSRK1 knife DOES indeed accept standard two-notch blades from Stanley. See the submitted photo with a Stanley 11-939 HD roofing blade mounted in the Lenox.

This knife is a great substitute for the Stanley Titan 10-122 which only seems to be available in the UK now. The fixed blade 10-550 is still available in USA.

Pros:

- feels good in the hand
- accept Stanley blades
- wide slot for heavy duty blades
- easy to open, easy to change blades
- internals come wells lubed from the factory
- Lenox gold blades are incredibly sharp

Cons:

- blade storage is inadequate and finicky

Lenox builds products that are built to last, and the Lenox gold utility knife is no different. The knife has a solid weight to it, construction is excellent, the blades are super sharp and hold their edge. I would definitely purchase this product again. My only gripe is the price for a few dollars less there would be no match.

I purchased this utility knife roughly 10 months ago after having read some very positive reviews on a Contractor discussion forum. I'm a General Contractor myself and I use this knife daily. Up until I purchased this knife I believe I had purchased at least a half dozen different brand utility knives over the course of a year. Some were needed and others just impulse buys. A brand new utility knife has a tendency to grow legs on a job site. Nevertheless I love this knife. I typically used Stanley quick change knifes and for the price you can't beat them. But this Lennox just feels much more comfortable with higher quality parts. after a few months of use the retracting mechanism started to stick so I took it apart, spent a few minutes cleaning it out and sprayed the sliding parts with wd40 and it worked better than new. As for the negative reviews: I can't see the gripes over the quality. Aside from having to clean it mine has worked flawlessly. And the review that complained about the difficulty changing blades. I agree to an extent because it is different than the Stanley quick change and I can't remember if instructions were on the package. I actually prefer the Lennox quick change over the Stanley because the Lennox button needs to be pushed to the right while the Stanley simply needs to be extended past the fully open position which is indicated by a small indentation on the sliding mechanism. I say this because with the Stanley I had a tendency to put force on the retracting button while cutting and I would inadvertently release the blade. Unfortunately I always hold the knife closer to the blade for stability and leverage which made this an everyday occurrence. Not so with the Lennox. Although it is more expensive than probably all other brands I think it's worth it. It's not like buying a Mercedes. It's a utility knife. So buy one! You won't regret it.
