Biography

Every genre has its defining figureheads. Folk has its Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan; country has the Carter Family, Bob Wills and Hank Williams. Rock has its Elvis, Chuck Berry, and the Beatles. In blues, it's Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, and in jazz, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Miles Davis. When it comes to contemporary traditional Cajun music, there is BeauSoleil. For… Read more in Amazon's Beausoleil Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Cajun music, August 5, 2001
This review is from: L'Echo (Audio CD)
For someone like me who was completely new to Cajun music, this album was a fascinating introduction. The songs transport you to earlier, more francophone times: most go back to the early 20th century, but one even harks back to Napoleonic days. Perhaps the line that best sums up the atmosphere of the album is: "Chauffer un gregue de café, gouter et causer en français" ("Warm up a pot of coffee, sip it and chat in French", according to the liner notes). "L'écho" is a great collection of mellow tunes, and sound testimony, if you spare the pun, of the Cajuns' determination to maintain their French Creole culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree with Susan, should have won a grammy, December 30, 2007
This review is from: L'Echo (Audio CD)
This is a cd that I have owned since a long time ago and it is amazing and wonderful. I believe it should have won a grammy like Susan stated because Michael Doucet and Beausoleil are better than Dylan and all the other contemporary artists that exist in my opinion. When I hear Dylan I don't lose my breath because of his voice, like Michael can make you do. My advice, buy all the Beausoleil CD's and you will be transported to paradise and Louisiana.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare diamond, January 3, 2006

Susan Budig (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: L'Echo (Audio CD)
This album caught me by surprise. I already own seven other BeauSoleil CDs, oh yeah, and two tapes, plus six or so other Cajun and Zydeco albums. I wasn't expecting to fall in-love with yet another dance disc.

It's not another dance disc. Sure, it has very groovin' numbers on it (Freeman's Zydeco, Chez Denouse McGee), but Michael picked out tunes from those fabulous oldsters (Dennis McGee, Freeman Fontenot, Isom Fontenot) that deserve to be remembered.

These are not songs that are played by every other Cajun band, and I wonder why that is? This album was up for a Grammy in 1995? or '94, but was bested by Bob Dylan. I dunno. I'm a big Dylan fan, but I think I would have voted L'echo, for it's superb selections, historical value, and irresistible pieces.

La Cravate A Ziggy Zag is a children's tune, but Michael spices it up with wildly inspired fiddle playing. And I plan on requesting Cajun Crawl the next time I hear the band at a gig. And I'm learning all the words to La Belle De Bayou Teche simply because it's one of the most beautiful waltz's ever.

It's exceptional Cajun music, pulled into our times from nearly a century ago.
