5.0 out of 5 stars unbelievably fun/challenging game, maybe KOEI's best, if not the NES's best, August 16, 2006

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: L'Empereur (Video Game)
L'Empereur is probably the most painstakingly accurate historical simulation I've ever played. The commands, the data, the officers, the integration of historical events, are all seamless. Once I got into this game, which took some time, I was hooked, probably for life--I still take this out every now and then and get completely immersed in it. While the challenge has largely diminished with practice (I can typically take all the cities by 1808 or even sooner), this game still takes an immense amount of strategic planning. I can recall just how difficult I thought this game was when I first began playing it in earnest--and really falling in love with the battlefields, and the battle commands. The use of artillery in particular is what makes this entire game worthwhile--it is unbelievably effective if handled with skill (you can defeat armies four times the size of your own if you know what you're doing).

The graphics and music are surprisingly decent given this is an 8bit game--it is certainly a hell of a lot more enjoyable to play than most new games. If KOEI were to remake this game for a new platform I might consider buying the platform for this title alone. It is the kind of game you can invest weeks of work into. The really rewarding thing about L'Empereur is the satisfaction of seeing all the careful economic preparation, diplomacy, and thorough training coordinated into a meticulously tuned war-machine, which in turn demonstates itself in military prowess on the battlefield.

Play this game if you can, it is fun, and if it isn't yet it will be once you master its fundamental points.

Please revive this title KOEI!

5.0 out of 5 stars Napoleon nut, April 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: L'Empereur (Video Game)
This is the only game I have found that covers the Napoleonic era. It is a combination of many koei historical games. You are Napoleon and as long as you can handle the many responsiblities, that come with trying to conquer Europe, you can win this game. As you go up in rank you aquier greater power. I wish they would've developed this game more with newer versions. Of all the Video and computer games I own (which is about 70) this is my favorite game. It is also the most challenging, even though by todays standards the graphics and AI seems outdated.
