Philosophy in music, with a blast,
By ricciodimare (Tuckahoe, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: L'Era Del Cinghiale Bianco (Audio CD)
Truly the new era of Battiato's production after more esoteric experimentation started with "L'era del cinghiale bianco". Battiato's encounters with musicians and/or philosophers have marked his ever changing mood for something different. Here it started with meddling with Giusto Pio, a classic violinist with a mind far more than open. The result is this remarkable album, a real gem of Italian music from the 70-80's edge. The title track will remain a masterpiece for future generations of listeners, literally driven by a violin paganinized under the rhythm of new pop. Incredibly fascinating the all-Sicilian "Stranizza d'ammuri" sung in native dialect with a piano rhythmically circular smoothened by a lyrical string background. "Il Re del mondo" (The King of the World) probably echoes Rene' Guenon's book often in Battiato's thoughts ("Piu' diventa tutto inutile e piu' credi che sia vero" i.e. "The more everything turns to be useless the more you think it is real"): Whatever its origin, it thrives on its sequence of major/minor and the guitars' cadence (the unbelievable Alberto Radius!) that make it a superbly interesting piece of contemporary music. Highly recommended to the curious listener to unlikely masterpieces.

Ursa Major and Wild White Boar,
By Gianluca Molinari (Grignasco, Novara - ITALY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: L'Era Del Cinghiale Bianco (Audio CD)
Letterally "L'era del cinghiale bianco" mean "The age of wild white boar". This L.P come after "L'Egitto prima delle sabbie" (The Egypt before the sands) and mark the end of the experimental period, and introduce Battiato into the pop-rock period. The changing of Battiato's music is radical..the syntetizer, the classical and the etnic instruments are fused into an echo of oriental-modern sound. The CHANGING is the sign of this L.P. and its title ( the wild white boar ) hit the mark. In fact the wild white boar, in the esoteric language of celtic's tradition, is the simbol of the spiritual autority; while the Ursa Major is the simbol of the temporal power. The temporal power whit a rebellion dispossessed the spiritual one, and the umanity now live the Kaly-Yuga, the lowerest cycle of the universe. All the tracks are full of a spiritual and magical atmosphere, from the "Magic Shop", a brief history about the holy gadget selled by self-styled religious men, to "Luna indiana" ( Indian Moon ) and "Il Re del Mondo" ( the king of the world ) Battiato gift true pieces of art. Whit this album, born from a bet ( sell a lot of L.P ), Battiato start whit his most famous L.P: "Patriots", "La Voce del Padrone", "L'Arca di Noe'"...for me "L'era del cinghiale bianco" is a MUST for all Battiato fans or for all that want to taste the unic "mind" sound of this Artist. Battiato say in the song that give the title to the L.P: "I hope that the age of wild white boar return soon"...stop the thoughts and listen...
