This unit is in some demand, with the belated discounts, and was lucky to find one (a 70 mile commute). I agree with online comments about the 1080p/720p issues; the incoming signal is more of a determining factor than the receiving unit in terms of image quality. Conclusion: a good 720p lcd-HD tv should do extremely well. Case in point; this one! Discovery HD broadcasts are particulary stunning, and other "nature" productions (e.g. "Exploring North Carolina" on PBS HD in my area). Combined with my AV receiver/surround setup, the unit not only lights up the room in a big way (and the sleek black finish is a nice complement too), but the sound completes it.

Review the TV, not your cable service...,
This review is from: LG 42LC7D 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
As a 720p HDTV, which you should clearly know you bought, it is a great television. You didn't buy 1080p, so don't expect it to be one. Also, complaining about your standard channels not looking nearly as good as your HD channels?...is that supposed to be a surprise to consumers?
People that have reviewed this television or others TVs with those types of comments are completely oblivious about the technology and probably don't know how to make the best out of it anyways. It's a shame people rate it so low because they simply don't understand how HD television broadcasts work. I'm not saying this TV is perfect, but it is good. Currently used as my main televsion (purchased Oct. 2007), using TimeWarner HD receiver (via component video) and PS3 (via HDMI) connected. As a simple test for HDTV quality, if you can't tell the difference between your HD broadcast and a DVD (HD broadcast should be BETTER), then the TV probably isn't worth it; and I can clearly see a difference with this television. + Blu-Ray movies also POP with amazing color. I suggest watching 'Ocean's 13' just for the colors. It's beautiful. Most PS3/xbox360 games are still produced in 720P, and this TV displays them wonderfully...as most HDTVs do though. Anyways, a previous reviewer stated that everything is distorted on standard definition channels, but that's because they're using one of the many zoom views. That's a choice that you make. You either watch it with borders (like everyone else, on any other HDTV), or you use zoom which distorts the image or cuts off the edges. I suggest setting your television to "set by program" so everything looks as it should. 4/5 star. There are better TVs out there for similar cost at this point. LG did make a nice LCD with this one though. If you happen to get a nice deal - I'd suggest it.

Great tv! takes up little space, looks great and sounds great! The brightness is amazing and the HD is awesome! I use hdmi cables for an upconverter and hd cable box.The picture quality on regular channels is better than samsung, sharp, misubishi. Analog cable is clearer but no hd capability. It has a built in hd antenna but it quit workin after a few months. Cable hd offers way more anyway.I have had a few blochy moments but overall I can't complain, I do wish I woulda spent the money and got full hd capability though. Also if your payin for heat you can turn it off, this baby gets warm! Not too bad though, better than anything philips or sony has to offer!

ok. Lets say this: another impulsive buy. I had a bad day, next thing you know, I was gazing at tvs in best buy. I didn't know much at all about the differences 720, 1080, plasma, lcd. etc etc. So I learned as much as possible in say, a 4 hour time span and this was the tv I picked. I also loved the sale price(would NEVER buy one unless it was on sale, so I had the pick of the litter...of what was currently on sale at the time). I'm glad I got LCD, it's more energy efficient then plasma. Plus, I'd always heard plasma horror stories about the screen breaking. I wasn't TOO worried about 720-vs-1080, but I'm a very easy to convince girl. As long as I was talking to the right person who didn't scare the crap out of me about the differences, I was all set. Plus I don't sit around analyzing the grass on the football field, which is apparently where this difference REALLY matters(to the men who like sports). I could barely tell the difference between any of the 50 tvs on the wall. Just knew which was brighter and had nice colors. I've had the TV since...maybe april or may and I really enjoy it. I watch dramas, ghost hunters(it's great for actually being able to see the minute ghost they're referring to) and well, generally I watch a lot of tv(though I'm not proud to say that). I've gotten used to the HD channels really hogging my dvr, but seeing it full screen is much nicer then the box in the middle from the regular channels. At first i didnt get WHY HD was sooooooo much cooler(especially to my boyfriend) but eventually I hopped on the band wagon. I can analyze the muscles of the guys on prison break much better now. Thank you LG. gotta love HD. It hasn't malfunctioned, is great for playing the wii, and though at first it seemed way too big for the living room, I have now adjusted quite nicely and really really heart <3 my tv.

I got this tv for a screaming good deal (Under $800 - NEW). We do not even have cable in my house so I was weary of purchasing a HD TV. We went from getting 7 channels to 52 channels! I was amazed. Not only does it receive ch 2 and ch 5 (which never was possible before for us where we live), it receives 2 variations of channel 5! The picture quality is absolutely amazing so far. I haven't even had a chance to watch a Blu-Ray Disc yet! We are surrounded by forested areas and have a tree cover over the house, so I can't believe how well the receiver works. The sound is also incredible. I actually want to watch TV now. Hopefully, it doesn't make me a couch potato!

Nice TV for the price,

We originally bought a Philips TV at Best Buy, but after we got home and opened it up, found it didn't have the analog connection we needed to hook up the very fine stereo system we had(after the salesman and Best Buy told us it did). Best Buy took it right back and offered us this set in exchange even though it was priced slightly higher. Very easy to install and it had all the connections we needed. However, at first I wasn't too happy with the picture. It seemed a little dark and a bit muddy but after researching on the internet and reading the manual a little more, I found that it can be adjusted and now the picture quality on most stations is great! I have to note that we don't subscribe to cable or satellite or any other programs, just get our local on air channels. We do watch a lot of DVDs and there's no problem with them. The main problem we have now has to do with the station signals which, if not good that day, cause pixels to break up and freeze at times. At first I thought it was the TV and went back to Best Buy where another salesperson showed me how to adjust the antenna and check the signal, so we get the best signal possible now. Overall I would rate this TV pretty well. Have had it about 3 weeks now so we'll see how it stands the test of time. Although, I wonder if we should have sprung for a more expensive TV and one with 1080p, this one so far does what we need and looks great.

Have had MAJOR SCREEN PROBLEMS,
By
This review is from: LG 42LC7D 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I am happy that most people who gave good reviews for this tv are happy, sadly I am not one of them. I bought this tv back in march 2008. two months later, a red vertical line showed up on the screen. I called Lg since of course it is under warranty and they sent a repairman to diagnos the problem. turns out the entire screen had to be replaced. so, they replaced the screen and that very night, I notice two purple spots as well as 3-4 other shadowing spots on the screen, this really angers me because the second screen was ordered directly from LG. I am in the process of trying to get a refund and I want to get another brand of tv. I am sorry , I have heard that LG products are good but In my case , it has been nothing but a bad experience and I cannnot recommend this tv.

I couldn't believe how dark and muddy the picture was on this TV. I tried with the HDMI and component from a high-quality Sony system. HDMI certainly looked a lot better and I could scale the image to the native resolution of the TV and it still looked awful. Adjusting brightness and contrast just washed out the picture and made all the blacks gray.

Beware of being mislead,
This review is from: LG 42LC7D 42-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
Overall I'm satisfied with this product (especially since I got it on sale at Best Buy for $999.99), but I would not pay full price for it. I did my research and understood that you need HD cable to get the full experience. Our local cable company however only offers 19 channels. The difference between a "regular channel" and an HD channel are drastic and I'm extremely disappointed with the regular programming. The picture is grainy and distorted dramatically, people looked smooshed in the frame and the graininess is so bad I feel like I need new glasses. So when I watch HD programs and Blu-Ray dvds I'm blown away, but then I just get sad when I sit down to watch something ordinary like Jeopardy.
