3.0 out of 5 stars better quality on the way, January 12, 2010

Like the other reviewer, I've had similar problems with this mail box. In fact I can go one better. In assembling the mailbox pedestal there is a threaded rod that must be inserted to hold the various parts of the pedestal together. No problems there. What apparently wasn't allowed for in the original design is the differential heating and cooling between this threaded rod and the rest of the pedestal. That is, if everything heats up and cools down at the same rate - no problem. But here, in West Tennessee, recently we've had several days of cold weather that were just recently broken by some sunshine. Remember what I said about "differential heating and cooling"? Well, on that sunny day, the outside part of the pedestal heated slightly while that threaded rod remained cold. Since warmer metal expands, what happened is that the top mount (where the rod attaches to the outside part of the pedestal) broke - resulting in a mailbox that looks like it's "drunk". But I think that I can repair it with some epoxy glue. The repair should be almost invisible.

The good news is that my wife contacted the manufacturer and they're going to send me a new, re-designed model that has a sturdier base. Should have it in a few days.

However, unlike the other reviewer, mine has never leaked and the hardware and other fasteners have all worked quite well. Maybe they live in a place where there's a lot of blowing rain - though it would be tough for it to leak even then. Maybe they didn't assemble it right? My only problem was with the base, and it seems like that's been solved.

One caution though. If you do buy one, DON'T tighten the fasteners down like you would if this were made of steel. Especially when fastening the base down to your concrete slab (or whatever you mount this to), and tightening the threaded rod (see above). Cast metals can be brittle. You can break through the base if you tighten too much, and I think that I may have over-tightened the rod when assembling the mail-box pedestal (thereby causing my problem). Just get those fasteners a little past "snug".

1.0 out of 5 stars Not such a bargain after all............, June 19, 2009

Pluses: looks good, inexpensive as compared to others
Minuses: very poor quality, not even worth the "cheap" price
Recommendation: do not buy it!!!!

The quality of this product is just horrible. First, it leaks. Every time it rains our mail gets soaking wet. Second, I have to fiddle with the key every time to get it unlocked. Lastly, the pedestal is very unstable. We have ours bolted down to a concrete base and the mailbox still sways a bit every time it is touched. This constant instability has caused one of the joints on the pedestal to crack so now it is only a matter of time before the whole thing falls apart.

Bottom line.....don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars JunkBox, March 15, 2011
This review is from: LG BLK ALU Ped Mailbox
Our whole Subdivision has these boxes. BIG mistake. The association forced us to buy it but with most of them Broken (cast aluminum chipped), Tilting (tension screw, poor design), Falling over (Postal carrier pushes a little to hard, cheap quality), it's everyperson for themselves :(. I have re-built twice, once on an extremely cold day where I froze my hands to put it back together, just so I could get my mail. When it rains mail gets wet. I currently have the leaning tower of Gibralta. Wating for the weather to get warmer to make a change.
