Good solution until format war is over or smaller HDTVs,

This review is from: LG DN798 1080p Upconverting DVD Player (Electronics)
I needed an upscaling player for my 37-inch HD television but didn't want to spend a lot of money. I also didn't want a $50 player that would only cause me trouble. After quite a bit of research, I settled on the DN798.
I'm never sure what to think about picture quality comments in reviews, but this rated well with Consumer Reports and seemed to be well-liked by reviewers. Even without adjusting my set or fine tuning the player, I'm very happy with this player. The closest comparison I can think of is that the movies look similar to the film-based movies available through Comcast's OnDemand. The quality varies a bit from DVD to DVD, but there are a lot of factors in producing a good image. One that really stood out was The Simpson's Movie, but my nine-year-old version of Dumb and Dumber looked great as well. Keep in mind that to upscale video and watch protected discs, which is just about anything purchased, the player must be connected using HDMI. Other pros: Sound was great via coax digital, USB port right on front (goofy limitations in the manual, though), couldn't have been easier to set up.

I purchased this DVD player a few months ago to replace a Denon dvd playe, which I loved. Before hooking this player up, I was worried that the quality would not be great (given the low price). However, after an easy installation, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent picture and sound quality. (I have the player connected to my receiver via an HDMI cable and a fiber optic cable.)
This player is a great segue between a standard and high definition dvd player. Pros: Great picture, great sound, easy setup Cons: Small remote (universal definitely required), not DivX compatible

This has been one of the best DVD Players I have ever purchased. I hooked it up to my LG 32" LCD TV and I am amazed at the picture quality. It was worth the price.

The LG Upconverting DVD makes a standard DVD look the same as a Blu-Ray Disc. The remote works perfectly and easily. The resoltion is adjustable. This is a wonderful device, which as worked perfectly, so faar.

I got this unit a few days ago. Satisfied with it so far.
I am writing this review to tell people not to buy the really cheap HDMI cable that was "Frequently Bought Together." It is not worth the little money. While watching my dvd, sometimes the screen went black, saying "searching for signal", and then the picture came back in about a second. This happened for the 3 dvds that I have watched so far. At first, I thought the player must be defective. But then it occurred to me that maybe the HDMI cable is bad. I changed the TV input to component, and voila, the problem was gone. I realize there is a reason why there are such big price differences among HDMI cables. Don't get the cheap ones.

After using a first gen LG upconverting DVD player, I thought I'd try out this newer LG DN798 model that does full 1080p to use with my new LG 47" LCD panel. Wow what a great combo! I had always settled for 720p up with my older Samsung 40" LCD, which is pretty decent, but you can see that the LG likes the full 1080p and this player delivers. The price thru Amazon even with the second party sell thru was great and shipping nice and fast.

Received faster then promised. Very simple to use, and enabled me to view DVDs not accepted by my regular DVD Player. Very satisfied!

For the smaller (40") LG tv its a perfect match.
Connected with HDMI, good picture, remote not too small! When I push open there is a slight delay before it does, otherwise no problems.

This is a simple LG upconvert DVD player. I got this because I got an LG HDTV so i can use one remote on both. Nice picture, but i can't really tell the difference with the upconvert. it does take about 10 seconds before you can load a DVD. no biggie really. for the price, i would get another one, but will be saving up for an actual blu-ray player.
