Versatile performer,
This review is from: LG DP889 8-Inch Portable DVD Player and Digital Photo Frame (Electronics)
I was in the market for a portable DVD player, but I wanted a higher resolution screen than most players offer. Of the ones available near me, only this LG model and the Sony FX820 featured a resolution of 800x480. This is far better than what you get on most portables.
The LG DP889 is a slick-looking device. It has a glossy screen, which is a fingerprint magnet, but the screen is resistant to scratches. The picture is gorgeous. One thing I don't like is that the speakers are rear-facing, but they do sound pretty good. The unit has 256MB of built-in memory, and it takes SD/MMC/MS cards, so that's pretty nice if you take it with you for viewing shots from your camera. It is lightweight at 2.1 pounds, but carrying it around can be awkward since it's a tablet-style unit. Carrying it like you normally would will put fingerprints all over the screen, but I guess that's a minor inconvenience. One nice thing (if it matters to you) is that this unit will play both NTSC and PAL DVDs. I think that's pretty rare in these players. If you can get a good deal on it, it's well worth it, but you have to know what it can and cannot do. All in all, this is a great little machine!

Suprisingly good!,

I actually researched so many portable dvd players online because I wanted something pretty good for watching during breaks at work. So I had my mind set on a certain player that they had at circuit city, but when I got there I was stumped on the one I supposedly wanted. A gentleman there suggested the LG DP889 model because it's a digital picture frame/ cd player/ dvd player. I have to admit it looked very nice on the outside,(it has a glass screen-so I imagine fingerprints may be a problem). Anyways I had him plug it in so I could see the picture quaility-it was great! I bought it took it home and love it the picture is awesome, but the sound isn't that loud, but with headphones (it has dual jacks)-no worries! The only thing I don't like is that the unit has to be turned off to charge it, so I get to watch about 1 whole movie plus half of the next movie before it dies. It seems like it does get the 3.5 hours battery life it claims. Even after I bought this, I'm still trying to find reviews on this model, but for some reason there are no reviews, so I was compelled to write one for the future buyer. I have to say though, for a split decision I think this player is really a great buy...it retails for $279 at LG website, but you can get it at circuit city for $169. Happy Shopping!

slick for awhile,
This review is from: LG DP889 8-Inch Portable DVD Player and Digital Photo Frame (Electronics)
when i first saw this product i was super stoked on how cool it looked and the fact that it was a dual picture frame as well and would look really slick sitting on my nightstand so i bought it.
the picture quality on this is pretty fantastic. unfortunately after 5 months the disc wouldn't spin anymore. it also started skipping and freezing up. so now it's in the trash. such a shame that it's such a cool design and so different from all the other portables out there.

Worked great for about 10 months then stopped reading DVDs.,

I received this DVD player as a gift for Christmas 2008, but a couple of months ago the DVD unit stopped spinning the disc. Since the unit has a memory card reader I may try to use this as just a photo frame, but as a DVD player it's toast. I called LG tech support but I would have to pay to get it fixed. I'd rather save up my money and get a new player - hopefully one that doesn't break within a year.
Bottom line - I say spend your money on something else.

MSRP Dropping,

The MSRP on LG's website is currently showing $249.00. Circuit City has it with a MSRP of $229.95 and selling it between 169-199. So just watch out that you're not paying over $200 or so when you purchase. I got it at Circuit City for 169.00 over the holidays with free shipping. So far I love it. It's priced about the same as upper priced digital frame alone. Good for office desk top movie watching (if you can't watch on your office computer).

Broke after three uses,

We had only used this player on three car trips when it started freezing and skipping. When we called LG they wanted us to clean it, which didn't work. Of course the warranty doesn't cover labor, so they wanted us to send it back, pay $70, and they would send us someone else's refurbished unit rather than simply replace it. The customer service was unbelievably bad for a product that was nearly new when it broke.
It was also extremely difficult to find a case that would work well in the car for the design of this player, especially if you need it to be viewable by more than one child in the back seat.

LG DP889 rocks!,

The DVD portable player by LG is a very good quality product and to me it does deserve 5 stars, as long as you know how to use and keep it. With an original classy design (not that much by now because of Iphone and Ipad) and strong structures, the picture quality is also excellent and cumfortable. To be honest,I can't travel without this jewel. I Got it for one year now and being carefully with it, the internal battery is still efficient (3 hours non stop playing) after almost 2 hours and a half charging. When opening it to change the DVD, it's essential to wait for the player to stop spinning obviously not to disturb rotation speed (same for a regular CD player). And then all the functions still work fine. the way you keep it is also important: far from heat, the sun, wet or cold environment. So a portable case is necessary to best protection. Physically, the player has good ergonomy and stability, wherever you use it in a train or a plane. Machinery is also quiet, not to disturb people around. If you play it plugging it to wall with you adaptator, battery charging is automatically interrupted and that's well thought. The remote control is almost complete (The bad point it needs some specific batteries) you can't find anywhere. The volume tool is only available on the player and not the remote control too though. The machine may seem kinda heavy for the player but at least the playing is not noisy (carter protection for better resistance.) Well I love it!
