4.0 out of 5 stars Ultra-Compact Portable DVD Burner
I recently got an Aspire One netbook to have an ultra-light computer in my briefcase on a daily basis. I soon realized it would be nice to have a DVD drive to play and burn DVD's and CD's.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work Properly with MacBook Pro in Spite of What It Says on the Box
I bought this to supplement the drive in my MacBook Pro which has been acting flaky lately.

It does not very well with a Mac OS X 10.6.5, in spite of the fact that the box says it should work with Mac OS X 10.5.4 or higher. Trying to burn a CD from iTunes, it would burn only one track and then quit -- multiple times. The track could be played from the CD,...

I recently got an Aspire One netbook to have an ultra-light computer in my briefcase on a daily basis. I soon realized it would be nice to have a DVD drive to play and burn DVD's and CD's.

The LG Portable Super Multi-Drive is slim and light, just like my Acer Aspire netbook. Its glossy black top attracts fingerprints, just like the Aspire...they look like they were made for each other.

The LG Drive plugs into a USB port on my netbook, so no bulky power pack is needed. The USB cord has two power plugs, because some USB ports may not put out enough power, so the cord allows plugging into two USB ports to get a higher level of power, if needed. One plug was enough with the Acer.

Because the unit is designed to draw a minimum of power, the DVD tray only pops out about an inch when you press the button. You pull it out the rest of the way manually. It also has a tiny "bobby pin" hole for an emergency release, to open the tray if a DVD gets stuck in the tray.

I used it first to watch a DVD movie I had rented. Windows Media Player with Window 7 produced a terrific picture, but no sound. I downloaded the free VLC media player, and the LG then played back the DVD movie with both a great picture, and nice stereo sound.

When I then played the DVD again using Windows Media Player, WMP also was producing stereo sound. I suspect the VLC player installed an audio codec that Windows 7 was missing, and that codec is now being used by both VLC and Windows to play back DVD movies.

I also used the LG to copy some of my favorite CD's to the Acer's hard drive. The LG did the job quickly and quietly. The LG is small enough and light enough to carry along on a vacation. It converts my Acer netbook into a nice movie player, and lets me listen to music CD's when the movie is over.

I am guessing that a lot of folks using Windows 7 may run into the audio problem when trying to watch a movie DVD. They need to understand that the problem has nothing to do with the LG Drive, it simply means they need to download the free VLC media player and allow it to install the audio codecs that Windows 7 is missing...thanks Bill Gates for leaving essential audio codecs out of Windows 7.

The track could be played from the CD, however the title information was "translated" into an asian language.

There are NO mac-related instructions included. Appropriate support info product is not listed on the LG North America website as of this writing. Search for the model number and one gets multiple model numbers NONE of which match what's in the instructions or on the box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review, February 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This was purchased for work. It was easy to install and use. The only thing negative I could say is that it was purchased as "wine" in color but when it arrived it was black. This is much better for a work environment, but if someone really wanted a "wine" color they would have been disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Skips constantly, December 1, 2010

When this drive works, it works great, but when it doesn't.... I bought it for my netbook, and at first it was absolutely perfect. Soon enough, though, it started being more trouble than it's worth. It creates CD's beautifully, but when I play a DVD through VLC, it skips...and skips...and SKIPS. Even a brand new DVD skips with this drive. Would NOT recomment to others.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crap..., November 12, 2010
This review is from: LG Electronics 8x DVD-R DL/24x CD-DA USB 2 Slim External Super-Multi DVD Rewriter GP08NU20BK (Personal Computers)

Wow... just wow. I just got this today and paid $60.00 for it at Best Buy. Now I know they charge a little more, but when I logged online and looked after buying it I was taken aback. Not only was it a lot more expensive, but this thing sucks. I plugged it in and put in the disk and nothing came up. I had to manually go into "My Computer" in order to open the file myself to install. I then inserted a DVD after installing to test the drive and it won't work. I have to PAY MORE MONEY to install a DVD compatible program. WTF? Shouldn't the disk I installed with all the program on it come with that? Or you'd think for the price I paid that some idiot at Best Buy would have told me that. I mean... there were 4 employee's just standing around chatting nearby not even paying attention to me. I had to go over to them twice to ask questions and only one would look at me. This is turning into a Best Buy review, sorry, but I'm annoyed. I am DEFINATELY taking this POS back tomorrow and will never be buying from Best Buy again. I'll also be doing a little bit more research before I buy one of these things. Gah! >.<

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst external DVD I have ever used, April 18, 2010
This review is from: LG Electronics 8x DVD-R DL/24x CD-DA USB 2 Slim External Super-Multi DVD Rewriter GP08NU20BK (Personal Computers)
It reads a DVD about 30% of the time. I have to constantly unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work properly, and that only brings the success rate up to 40% of the time. I personally will never buy an LG product ever again.

You have to install the upgrade from cyberlink which is an additional 50.00 if you have windows 7. After this is done the drive works perfect but it may be easier and cheaper to buy a better drive. I will never buy a LG product again.
