Reads and burn DVDs Fine.

It was a good deal and I had no Optical Drive in this comp period, so I figured I'd buy something nice since I don't have a need for multiple drives.

Its easy to install and works great!

While the drive looks pretty and seems to spin up, the software fails to load. I get a message that the software is only loads on an LG drive, which is what I have. I guess I will return it and go to New Egg.

UPDATE: USER FAIL!! ====

The thing is, I got this to work and I figured out why it didn't work. I have installed two Virtual DVD-CD drives and they were conflicting with the LG BluRay drive. Once I turned the VM drives off, the software installed fine. I more or less accidentally figured this out, and I assume that if someone has a VM or even a real DVD drive, the software MAY not install correctly. I got tremendous support from the vendor and they were on the issue the same day I figured this out. So, I am going to change my rating and give this caveat that the software may need to be installed on a machine with just ONE DVD-CD or whatever you have.

Interestingly, the Blu_Ray drive worked perfectly on my Linux Mint partition version 13 (Maya). So, I think the Windows software is a bit picky and certainly out of date, but it works well for my needs. I bought the drive to backup operating systems and web sites that I manage and 25 GB is good enough for me now. I don't plan on making a Blu-Ray disc, but if I do, I will post back. I also think that more support is needed on the Mac side as some vendors just are too lazy to write drivers for Mac or even Linux.

I think the drive is a good drive and LG generally makes good products. Good luck on your endevours.

Pros: Price
Cons: A little noisy on spin up, but not bad for price.

I bought this for my last build. After the reviews I was surprised that it shipped with the driver dvd; maybe they heard all the negative feedback and included it, I don't know. Mounted it, runs everything fine, took only a few minutes to get up and running.

Seems to me that it's exactly what it claims, an OEM bluray drive. It's marketed to people who install a lot of these for commercial purposes. If you want to pay the lower price you need to understand that you aren't getting the consumer retail version. Although since they seem to be shipping with the disk now, it really is pretty plug and play.

My Rig in case anyone cares:
Antec 1100 case w/ antec true quiet 120mm fans
Intel i5 3570K on Asus P8V77V-Pro overclocked to 4.2Ghz
Corsair H80 liquid cooler on exhaust config
8Gb G.Skill Ares Ram
EVGA GTX 560 TI superclocked
Agility 3 120GB SSD
Toshiba 2TB HDD

I saw a lot of reviews that were, at best, suspicious, I figured I should review it. The install was easy. The ease of install really depends on how your compute is built. For me it was easy because I didn't have to use the included screws. It also came with an adapter to change the power cable from the white connector to the SATA power connector. The software install was easy. There are two things I don't like about the software. First, why would they give you software that does not have the capability to burn to Blu-ray when it comes with a Blu-ray burner? I could play blu-rays without a problem, but if I wanted to burn them, I had to upgrade the provided software. I figured it was a way for cyberlink to make money. Give them the basic software for free, but still give them a reason to buy the software. Anyway, I went with another software that was easy to burn my TiVo recordings too called Tiny burner. All it does is let you burn files to the disks. No video editing capabilities. There is other software programs that do that and some are free. I just needed something to burn the TiVo files too. Tiny burner is free. The second thing I don't like about the included software is that everytime I boot up my machine, it asks me if I want to run the file to update the firmware for my burner. Another reviewer had the same problem. I haven't had a chance to look into getting that fixed.

The burner itself works just fine with Tiny burner, but for some reason, the windows burning software does not work. It would start the burn and later it would kick it out and say there was a problem, and that the disk may be unusable (which it was). That was a waste of a dollar. When I first tried to burn, I didn't update the firmware, so I figured if I did, it would fix the problem.

Bought this to replace a similar but old and sputtering-out optical drive in my 2008 HP Pavilion dv5000t. Drive arrived quickly, just stuck in a box with some fat plastic air baggies. That's OK as it's OEM and you're not supposed to need your hand held. But the product description clearly said it also came with software, but it didn't. Nothing. Just the bare drive. This caused me to need to spend to much time getting it working properly, though some of the problem was actually Windows 8.

---> IF YOU NEED THE FIRMWARE, READ THIS: I saw that this same info is in some other reviews, but I didn't see them until I was done. So to save you time if you're reading this, here's the firmware file you'll need to search for: WH14NS40_N1.00-A4%28ew%29.zip. If you go to the LG site and search on that exact string, you'll find it. You'll also note that there's no manual or other information (there is a short txt file in the zip that provides firmware upgrade instructions).

--->NOTE: You cannot find the file or get any help by using LG's online support options as it does not show up in any drop down menu. And because it doesn't show on a drop down menu, you cannot contact support unless you say it's a different drive. I actually tried that and got no response, but ended up not needing one.

---> READ THIS IF YOU CAN'T OPEN BLU RAY DISKS IN WINDOWS 8: At first I thought the drive was defective as it would not read a commercial Blu Ray disk at all. Not just not play it, but not even acknowledge its existence. Then I remembered something. I had upgraded from Windows 7 64 bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. I also got the free (at the time) Media Center option.
