5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product
Works with only one usb port unlike some Targus burners. No AC adaptor was required. It was purchased to use with the Acer Aspire One. It was very easy to use and has given absolutely no trouble. The item was purchased new from Power Optical for a total of $75.98.

2.0 out of 5 stars Worked a couple of times then it didn't
I bought this because my DVD drive in my laptop stopped working and rather than replacing it, for the occasional use it made sense to buy an external drive. The unit worked out of the box, but a few weeks later (after no additional use) stopped working. I even bought a $30 AC adapter, thinking this was the issue but that had no effect. It is now dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Burner, December 30, 2008
This review is from: LG GSA-E50L Slim 8x DVD±RW DL USB 2.0 Powered External Drive w/LightScribe (Black/White) (Electronics)
I got this burner some weeks ago, it's able to burn dvd double layer and light scribe too, this device is cheaper that targus Burners, the only complaint is that LG did not include a little bag to hold the Burner.
The Burner comes with Nero 7, it can be powered from USB connection, it's works very well.

I have a netbook. Needed and external DVD/Cd. This really fits the bill. Real nice unit. Compact, quiet, impressive. I really like it. Totally portable, also & works great with the new netbooks (ultraportables). Greatfull I found it, as well as the dealer. Service was very quick, and NO problems at all. If you want a very good product & very service, this is it. You can't go wrong.

Pros:
1) Small and portable
2) USB-powered
3) Burns at a great speed!
4) Is great so far! I've had it for a day and have been burning away happily

Cons:
1) USB cord a bit short, which might be a problem if you're a deskptop user. This peripheral is better suited for laptop users
2) It took me forever to figure out which software I needed to install just to burn a DVD without much fuss (Nero 7 Essentials). It's on the provided software CD but it should have been labeled a little more clearly

Love this external drive, it's light weight, and does not require an AC adaptor, powers up from the USB drive to the computer. Highly recommend and at a good price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Big drive in a small package!, June 20, 2009

This is just a great little drive that complements the Acer Aspire One that I own perfectly. It actually doesn't draw much power (5V via the twin USB cables: One for power and the other for data) and delivers plenty of features in spades. And it's been reliable providing some great reading and writing so far. What helps for mobile computing, besides its small draw of power, is that the disc snaps onto the drive's spindle.

This LG drive which not only can not only read and write most CD and DVD formats (not HD/BluRay, though) but also has a great LightScribe function for burning very high-resolution (about 1200DPI) labels directly onto special LightScribe discs (Aleratec 110116 CD-R LightScribe Discs (100 Pack), Aleratec 300114 16x LightScribe Duplicator Grade DVD+R (100 Pack)). For people who enjoy doing their own graphic design and want to add a professional touch without having to worry about ink and labels this is a very worthwhile feature. In fact the quality was so good my friends thought they were looking at a professionally mass-produced pressed and silkscreened disc.

But one other feature of this LG drive is its SecurDisc feature that adds an extra layer of data protection for your valuable data as well as providing encryption as well. It's a nifty feature if, for instance, you wish to digitize some old documents but want to make sure that the data can be accessed much later on. With its redundant data storage in SecurDisc mode it's some worthwhile protection.

For anyone looking for an external optical drive to not just compliment their Acer but as a worthwhile spare drive that connects easily via USB this drive is a must have. Its data security features are just an added bonus.

NOTE: This is the identical drive being offered at this link: HQRP USB 2.0 Powered External Slim DVD +/- RW DL Drive w/LightScribe for Acer Aspire One

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for both netbook and Macbook Air, June 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LG GSA-E50L Slim 8x DVD±RW DL USB 2.0 Powered External Drive w/LightScribe (Black/White) (Electronics)
When I replaced my old PowerBook with a MacBook Air. I knew that at some point I'd have to get a portable DVD drive to go along with it. (For home use, I can remotely access the drive on my Mac Mini, but that's no good on the road.) So I planned to get myself a Macbook Air SuperDrive. However before I could do so, I acquired a netbook - an ASUS Eee PC 901 - which, like the MB Air, has no DVD drive. I almost bought the SuperDrive anyway, but decided to check the online forums to see if it would work with the Eee PC. It won't. Even though the Superdrive plugs into the MB Air's USB port, it isn't a standard USB device. (Why DO vendors play these silly games, I wonder?)

All of which explains why I wound up buying this little external DVD drive from LG. It works very nicely with both the Macbook Air and the Eee PC, it takes up almost no space, and the price was unbeatable. Recommended.

I have this for over 6 months now. It works directly on my Mac, and on my Windows XP inside VMWare Fusion running on my Mac. It is slim and very portable, powered directly via USB connected to my Mac. I'm very happy with it.
