5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value in Class, June 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LG LHB336 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV (Electronics)
With the exception of scary generics that I don't know well, you're choices in the current blu-ray home theater in a box (HTIB) space is restricted to Sony, LG, Philips, and Samsung. I did see some reviews of Onkyo, but those are significantly pricier for the same features. I basically evaluated these players based on features for the $$$ and selected LG. I also found that all the new models are 3-D players, but very reasonably priced. I cannot comment on the 3-D display quality, as my LG LCD TV does not have this feature.

Setup/Install:

Good labeled speaker wire with no proprietary speaker connections (I'm looking at you Sony), so you can extend the wires easy for a bigger room. No HDMI or ethernet cable. This unit does not include wi-fi. No wireless rear speakers either.

Hardware:

Cheap ipod dock, but I'm sure it's sufficient. I haven't used it yet oddly, even though I have my iPhone on hand for music all the time. But I primarily use MOG and Pandora, both apps included on this web-connected system. (MOG for a fee, Pandora if you can put up with their constantly-increasing ads). I think the days of taking time to select and pay to "own" individual tracks are numbered, I LOVE the TV showing the music app while the tunes blast over the speakers.

Remote is decently laid out, but the tactile sense kind of stinks. Not a big deal to me, you just have to press the buttons a little harder than what should be necessary. I've got the remote app on my iPhone, but c'mon LG developers, give that app some KEYBOARD functionality.

Note: The LG "Remote" iphone app has 2 store choices. I'm speaking of the one labeled for 2011 devices. I'd like to know if the older app has text entry. Why is this important? Imagine how much text entry is needed to navigate Netflix, youtube, pandora, etc. The less-than-perfect remote combined with letter by letter selection gets old REAL fast. PLEASE LG APP DEVELOPERS, HEAR OUR CALL! We're looking at 3-5 seconds between character entry!

Speakers/Main Unit:

Nothing flashy here. The speakers have no protective cover but look sharp and modern in flat black. All 4 surround speakers are identical. The subwoofer looks nice with the same shiny finish as the surrounds. The center speaker for vocals is also attractive. The head-unit is quite wide, and the display is nothing special. Kind of like looking at a high-school scoreboard. White LED display on black.

Sound Quality:

What can I say, I've got surround sound for a VERY reasonable price. I'm happy with the quality compared to my TV speakers ;) I'm no audiophile, but I do love music and concerts. This sound quality meets my needs. It will boom if you like some bass to dance to.

Note: The next model up (LG LHB536 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV Integrated Wi-Fi) I THOUGHT only included integrated wi-fi connectivity, but look closer at the pics and you'll notice this unit adds tweeters as well. I can't comment on the difference in sound quality, but something to consider.

Network connectivity and apps:

System hooked right up to the web. Hard-wired to a wireless router on a Comcast cable subscription in Denver metro area. Props to LG engineers here, I was on the web instantly! I work as a computer engineer, so I do appreciate the ease of use and instant gratification out-of-the-box.

App installation:

1. Created my LG account and then accessed "Premium" apps

2. Netflix - Works great. My PS3 was consistently dropping Netflix about every 20 minutes, requiring a button press to restart play. Now I know it wasn't my ISP, b/c those days are over. The PS3 interface for netflix was a little more visually appealing and easy to use. However, Netflix is constantly testing new interfaces for different device types, so this could change next week.

3. Pandora - Well, just logged into this for the first time to give my fellow shoppers a break-down :) Beautiful interface, lots of functionality (bookmarks, ratings, station creation). This is a winner. My track-forward remote button even shoots to the next Pandora song. Nicely integrated.

4. MOG - I'm just happy to SEE this app from the little music start-up that could. Feature set is limited, very limited. But searching for nearly ANY artist/track/album and playing it immediately is SWEET! (Subscription service, but consider the amount of time needed to download tracks to devices and the cost to pay by track). I hope the guys at MOG will bring playlist look-up and creation to this app though. Basically all you have here is search and the ability to browse editor's picks, top picks, and new releases. Note: There is no searching of others' playlist's either (in my opinion the killer app of the MOG model). But alas, these functions already exist for the iPhone and Android MOG apps, so it's just a matter of time until this hits a developer's queue (PLEASE MOG?!?)

Overall, I like the system a lot so far. I'm only 2 days in, so hopefully no glitches to come. If you buy one of these, join up with the AVS forum site. Lot's of good details there on this product family.

Happy with the seller, very happy with Amazon's early delivery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full review: Affordable, integrated home theater system, June 13, 2011

This review is from: LG LHB336 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV (Electronics)
Short Summary

New breed of HTIB. Very tight and clean integration of 4 capabilities into a single slim box, giving very good capability and sound with a lot fewer wires and at an extremely competitive price.

This Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) is a synthesis of the following appliances:

1) A blu-ray player

2) An amplifier/receiver

3) 5.1 speaker setup (front/back L/R, Center, Sub)

4) Streaming Media Player (IE: WDTV)

If you price the average for each of these at about $100 (amps run more), then this is a VERY good deal. The sound is excellent for the price. High notes are clear and crisp, plenty of bass, and the center speaker is loud and crisp for voice audio (that is its job). This is not a "cheap" sounding system, but it's probably not going to impress the audiophile. It's perfect for 90% of the market it's addressing, and for anyone who hasn't experienced surround sound, wear a seat belt and get ready for the 'wow'.

The biggest benefit over other solutions is that it is totally integrated. Hookup is very easy and the front is clean, if not understated, since the UI is all through the TV. Compare it to your average On**o other HT amp - it's half the height with no buttons. How is this? I believe the secret is due to a few compromises that most people will live with. I'm going to list them because they are important to understand:

1) Limited connectivity. There's only ONE hdmi input (in back). This will not switch other inputs.

2) Limited CODEC support for the media player. Here's the codec list: DIVX3.xx, DIVX4.xx, DIVX5.xx, DIVX6.xx, XVID, MPEG1 SS, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG2 PS, MPEG2 TS, VC-1 SM (WMV3). Flip Ultra (Gen II) saves MPEG-4 AVI files with PCM audio and are NOT supported. CHECK YOUR CODECS on your camera!

3) No secondary analog audio out. (ie: can't output to a second room/amp).

4) No banana clips: Only bare-wire connectors for speakers.

5) Few buttons on the front (aside from on/off, basic controls) - UI is all on screen.

6) You can't specify a remote shared folder by IP - either it auto-discovers it or you can't use it.

7) USB Wifi adapter not included. $60 adder, and I haven't figured out what chipset is used to try alternates.

8) Most amps are built to do a lot: up-convert various inputs, switching, routing audio one place and video another, etc. This doesn't do that, but for MOST people that's just fine. You trade that capability for a whole lot of functionality and ease of use.

9) VERY limited capability of the remote. (minor inconvenience).

That said, this is easy to use without a programmable remote that you might need for the typical system (ie: to control TV, AMP, and player when switching modes). Streaming is excellent. I have several media players and this one is on par; it plays both local and streaming media from sources such as Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, and others. It's also updateable. There's even Google maps. Note: To get the most up to date list, you need to connect on-line and let it download the streaming media services.

(Note: I have it connected to a 50" LG Plasma with Simlink - this is likely better than connecting to another brand).

Overall, this is an excellent piece of gear that is suitable for anyone looking for a big list of modern capabilities, great sound, and simplicity of use and installation. The biggest potential "gotcha" may be the CODEC support for some, but the included Nero's MediaHome app lets you use a PC on your network to do the transcoding (ie: store the media on the PC, but play on the TV over your network).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, May 16, 2011
This review is from: LG LHB336 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV (Electronics)
Got this unit at Frys Electronics for $229. For that price it is a great home theater system.

Sounds great. Plays Blu Ray 3D. Lots of features. We especially like the home media DLNA feature.

I'm using an Asus RT-N16 router with Tomato USB software. Router has 2 USB ports and with Tomato you have a lot more control over the QOS settings. Got a 2 terrabit hardrive connected to router. We're putting all our music on it. So far the LHB336 has played every audio file we've thrown at it. No more going through CDs. Put your favorite songs in a folder and select that folder in the LHB336. Wonderful.

Video looks great on our LG 55LW5600. Don't have any 3D movies to play yet so I can't speak to that.

Pros - Value. Sound. Features.

Cons - Wife hates having to use three remotes. Had me plug satellite receiver directly to TV. It is a little more complicated than our using our old TV setup. It seems you have to press a lot of buttons to get to where you want to be. But then our old TV/DVD setup didn't do 1/3rd of what the new TV/Blu Ray home theater system can.

Still working on getting it to play video files from the network drive. Will update review when I figure that out.

Downloaded a 3D video file yesterday. Had to convert it to AVI format. Check out video format specs on LG's website. Blu Ray disk player will play certain formats. Will not play those same formats off a USB Harddrive. So you can't just copy a DVD formated video file over to the hard drive. Had to convert one of our vacation videos from DVD format to AVI to watch it.

BTW, the 3D video was awesome! The 2D to 3D (while still interesting) is just a cheap trick compared to and actual 3D video. Video was clear, vivid and coming out of the tv.
