Once again LG comes out with a superior product. This combo recorder was a replacement for my analog unit, which still works fine. I just wanted to upgrade to HD with the 1080P upconversion capability. I tried several DVDs in this unit. The first was was the old Errol Flynn classic, "Robin Hood." OH MY GOD! 1.0 out of 5 stars High priced piece of junk
Although this LG RC897T was and still is the most expensive digital DVD/VCR combo recorder, this is a another proof that the high price of a product may not be an indicator of its correspondingly high quality. This is a greatly overpriced piece of antique technology. I bought this LG RC897T DVD/VCR recorder based on the two glowing reviews. That was a big mistake...

I've watched this movie numerous times and I've never seen it like this. Some of the scenes were so crisp, it looked like 3D. Then I put in "Back to the Future II." Outstanding picture. But wait...there's more!

I record a couple of T.V. programs for the wife every week. They had a marathon one day, so I went through the day's episodes and there were several we had seen. I scheduled the times I wanted the recorder to record. There were gaps between the times and the recorder turns off after it's recorded the first episode. My old recorder would stay off and I would have to turn it back on. Not with the LG. That thing kept turning off, then back on to record the next time, then off, then on. It was fantastic! The other thing was my last machine would not record the entire 4 hrs. on the DVD in LP mode. It would stop 8 minutes short. Not the LG. That baby recorded every minute. FABULOUS.

Lastly, I just want to mention that I have NEVER opened the instruction manual. I'm no brain surgeon, but I figured it out quickly and with ease. Also, the remote automatically recognized my VIZIO T.V. and will control not only the recorder, but the T.V. too. I didn't have to do a thing.

I have been buying LG products for years for my computer. I have always been happy with their products. I took a chance with this combo recorder and I would recommend it to anyone. I guess the manufacturer realized they had a winner too, because after I bought mine, the price went up $50. GREAT machine!!

That was a big mistake. They both might well have been written by either LG employees or their proxies to sell a piece of junk. This unit is of ancient technology, analogous to the time when you had to hand-crank cars before you could just slide your key into the ignition and turn it to get the engine going . If you have a digital cable box, you have to place a blaster sent with this LG unit just so by the digital cable box in order to be able to timer record programs from various TV channels without you having to personally change the channels on the TV set from, let's say, digital channel 81 for timer recording one program to timer record another program on channel 4. In other words, this LG "NEW" LG DVD/VCR recorder does not have any built in capability to timer record from different channels, which cancels out timer recording unless you are willing to spend several hours on the phone with some LG CSR who may or may not know how to overcome the technological backwardness of the LG unit. After spending over one hour with one of them, I gave up. In other words, compared to other digital dvd recorders, this way too highly priced LG recorder (although it is declared to be "new") is old technology which cannot be programmed to timer record unless you yourself change the TV channel from one to the other that you want to record from. For many years, I've had a non-digital Panasonic DVD/VCR combo recorder which 8 years ago already had built into it the ability to change TV channels on its own for timer recording of programs from TV channel to another when programmed to do so. By the way, it was the LG CSR who informed me that this LG Model RC897T is old technology. He didn't tell me just how old it is. It may well date back to the time when DVD recorders were first manufactured.

This was an altogether happy experience. I live in Germany 9but have 110V and US plugs) thus the seller warned me of the diffrence in current, also that the LP does not play PAL format. It gaveme the feeling of personal and not automated service. Also, the player arrived very fast. I highly recommend this seller.

I have had many troubles with this product. there are times when I am able to dub from vcr to DVD. There are times when it wouldn't dub properly. To watch anything on this unti, the television has to be on Video 1. But after recording a program (or watching a tv program while the TV is on Video 1), there is an awful lot of buzzing. If you do buy this, don't buy it refurbished, like I did.
