LG Versa VX9600 Phone, Black (Verizon Wireless)

This a great little phone. Its essentially an upgraded LG Dare with an attachable keyboard. I've been through a few Verizon phones, so let me just lay out the good and bad points about this phone.

The good:
- Sensitive touchscreen
- Responsive accelerometer
- Great call quality, with no dropped calls (You really can't beat Verizons coverage)
- Good battery life
- Nice attachable keyboard
- Not as bulky as a smartphone
- Nice browser that supports full HTML and Flash
- A decent MP3 player
- Additional attachments on the way
- Expandable memory

The Bad:

- Screen gets dirty fast, a problem common to touch screen phones
- Battery takes a long time to charge fully
- 2.5mm jack instead of the normal 3.5mm headphone jack, strange considering part of its draw is its MP3 ability
- The attachable keyboard case is not very attractive
- the screen on the keyboard case is lousy - It looks like something you'd find on the cell phones of the 90s.
- No dial pad on the outside of the keyboard case.
-Micro SD card slot is not accessible when the keyboard is attached.

Despite my listed complaints, I still think this phone is a great investment. If you can't afford a smartphone, this is the next best thing. It makes texting a breeze, and looks cool too.

I just got this phone and I love it! It's replacing my Verizon LG the "V" phone and it's a really well designed phone I suspect intended to compete against the Iphone. The screen is great, the keyboard is just about perfect, the color and design gives it an "upscale" feel and the touch screen is very responsive. The finger swiping motion is similiar to the Iphone though I think the Iphone is a little bit more refined.

Though this is my first touch screen that I have owned (I've tried the Iphone, Voyager, Dare, and Storm), I feel like this one's the best Verizon offers, sort of a combination of all three aforementioned Verizon phones. It's not too big, though weight wise it's a bit too heavy for a shirt pocket.

I haven't played around with all the features but I did notice two things that could stand improving on.

1) They need to include a down arrow symbol to let the user know that more options are available for viewing below certain menus
2) Why they went with a 2.5mm jack boggles the mind. Where the 3.5's on backorder? C'mon Verizon!

But that's the only negatives I can see right now, and they are both minor. Hey, and the battery charger is great especially with the included usb cable.

Can't say enough good things about it, I think it's a winner.

Note - I'm not sure why Amazon posts a November 2007 comment in the item description which I assume signifies a release date but the phone was just released days ago, in February of 2009 so what the heck?

I'm going through a 3rd Versa right now. After getting a missed call, and not getting to it right away, the touch screen freezes. The battery has to be taken out and put back in to get the phone back to working mode. Despite all that I really like the phone and that's why I kept going back to Verizon to exchange for the new one, thinking that it just could be this phone. My 3rd exchange was yesterday and just one day later, the phone froze again after a missed call. My patience has ended at this point, hope you're more lucky if you're getting this phone.

I love the features, the screen, the keyboard, closing the keyboard and it auto locks, the cube effect between screens, good calendar, calculator, tip calculator, world clock, etc.

It multi-tasks so I can listen to music while doing almost everything. If I make a call or use the navigator the music stops. When I exit the app the music starts where it left off. I can text and do most other functions and the music plays in the background. When the music is playing it puts a ribbon across the top which blocks some of the icons under it but you can move the icons to get them out of the way. When you receive a text the music stops and while reading the text the music does not continue until the text screen is exited. Seems like that is something that should be fixed.

The voice commands do not seem to work very well except for using it to make calls. I could not get the right song to play and when I said goto navigator every time it goes to the calculator.

The internet browser works as expected for a phone. I would like to have seen a floating magnifier. You have to do 2 clicks and a slide to magnify the entire page and then rub the screen until the part of the page desired is shown. This works fine but seems like fewer clicks could be designed.

The navigator is the typical VZNavigator with its inherited cut-down features compared to a real gps. It depends on a Verizon network connections for maps but has a good gps for location tracking. I have 30 days free then I will activate the subscription for a month when traveling.

The user interface was very well thought out. There are a lot of features and shortcuts. I love the way you can locate a contact quickly. The favorites screen for adding contacts is very convenient. I wish the media screen allowed a play list to be added to it or an album.

The camera has a flash and they cut back a bit from the Dare as it is 2mp instead of 3mp. What is a phone camera for anyway? It is unlikely you will win the photography Pulitzer award with a phone camera but then again who knows. I use my camera to take photos of faces for my contacts and that is pretty much it. There are plenty of features with the camera including a panoramic mode that allows you to take 3 shots to form a panoramic view. It shows you the right edge of the previous shot so you can align the next shot. Now if the world would just hold still long enough to get the next shot. The focus to shot time is really long at about 2-3 seconds and the lens is way to slow for an action shot. You can turn the autofocus off, there is a timer, auto save on/off, face detection, spot or average focus, 3 shutter sounds or no shutter sound, white balance, change resolution. The video works well for a phone camera.

The speaker is loud but only a mono speaker. The bluetooth works perfectly. The rings are very loud and a lot to choose from. You can easily add your own ring tones with the USB Mass Storage mode on a Mac, Linux, or ... what was that other abstract operating system out there? WinDose or something like that.

You will not make a fashion statement with this phone as the case is mud ugly. The nice thing is that it protects the phone. Sure would have been nice if they had provided a place for the included stylus. I guess that stylus was an afterthought.

The contacts are always available. The contact program is a bit light as it does not have the ability to put the address in. That would be really handy and especially if it was linked to the navigator.

The keyboard is just awesome. It has plenty of room for big fingers and all the standard symbols are available right on the keyboard.

The reception seems to be very good. I noticed that I am getting 1 to 2 bars more than with the Glyde and about the same as the Krave.

There is no software included. It seems that there are issues with the drivers working with Verizon's Rhapsody program. I hope the get this fixed soon. For now you can access your memory card by putting the phone is USB Mass Storage mode.

There is no such thing as a perfect phone but this one is worth the extra money. Have you noticed that the ones that are cheap are the ones that everyone is having problems with? You can get a Glyde online for 50 dollars. The new Glyde with the resistive screen may be worth the 50 dollars if you really only want to talk on the phone and do not care about the other features. Then the other features become a bonus. If you want a phone that you can talk on and actually use for music, browsing, quick texting, and limited navigation then the Versa seems to be a good choice.

I was looking at touch screen phones with a QWERTY keyboard, and after all my research I decided on the Versa. My wife got the LG Dare. Overall its a great phone, the touch screen is very responsive, and of course the attachable keyboard is great. Only thing I was not very impressed with, which others users from various review websites have noted with is the battery life. I dont use the internet, I mainly use the phone for texting. With an average of about 5 texts a day and I've had to charge the phone every other day. I believe this is because the detachable keyboard lights up when attached to the phone and this drains the battery life. I'm sure without the keyboard the battery life would be much better. Again besides the batter life, this is a great phone. If your debating between the Dare and Versa, I would say go for the Versa. (The Dare does have a much better camera).

Okay, I've had this phone for a little over a month now, and have very few complaints. It isn't the most user friendly phone at first, whenever I have friends use it it seems to take them a while to figure it out. Personally, I have no problems using it, it only took me a few days to totally get the hang of the touch screen and figure out everything it can do. The touch screen is very responsive, I rarely end up clicking on things I don't want to. The software on the phone is unbelievable and I totally love it.

*Camera*
The camera on the phone is decent, it takes better pictures outside, but inside ones are just okay. Nothing to get to excited about. I'm not sure why they put a 2 megapixel camera on it, but its not a big downside.
The Speakers on the phone are actually pretty good. Once you get music on it, it plays it pretty nice and loud. As far as the headphones go, I'm sure everyone has figured out by now that its not a 3.5 mm jack. I haven't had the right kind of headphones to try it out.

*Texting* Texting on this phone is awesome, the phone is a lot uglier with the attachable keypad, but its worth the trade off. The keypad is extremely thin, and it is really easy to text with. The fact that the keypad is so much smaller than the phone doesn't seem to be an issue. I only tried texting without the keypad a few times, it was pretty slow trying to find the right buttons because the on screen keypad is pretty small and its easy to hit wrong buttons on that. I'm sure if it was important you could get used to it though.

*Technical Issues*
I have only experienced one issue with my phone, it just randomly turned off, but it wasn't a big deal. I haven't had the problem that others have, when the miss a call and their phones freeze. So if that is something keeping you from buying the phone I would say go ahead and try it.

*Screen*
The screen is pretty bright in the dark, I've had it for a month and have managed to not scratch it, so has long as your careful you should be fine. In the sunlight sometimes it can be almost impossible to read the screen though, so that is another issue

*Battery*
The battery on the phone is decent, it really depends what your using for phone for. You can make it a few days if you just use it for calls and light texting, but if you use it a lot for music and texting the battery will die pretty quick. I picked up a car charger for $20 and since I'm in my car a lot I don't have a of of battery issues.

*Overall*
Overall I like this phone a lot, I've dropped it a few times and it seems pretty durable. I love the touch screen, also I received tons of compliments on my phone. It is a little weird trying to dial while driving, but the voice commands actually work pretty good. I would recommend this phone to people, if your not a really technical person that gets excited about the touch screen, maybe not. But if your somewhat interested in a technical phone than you will enjoy this one. For $100 in my opinion you can't get a better phone and recommend it.

I bought this phone due to what I have heard about LG and the functions it has. The phone is great when it works correctly, but the problem I have had is it freezes up when a text comes in and you don't view it within a few minutes. You then have to remove the battery to shut it down, then restart it. This was my first LG and will most likely be my last. I would not recommend get this phone until they work the bugs out of it.

This is a great phone. I bought it a couple days ago and its amazing. The touchscreen is great, and the keypad,(which is included), is a blast to use. Its great for all the smartphone - users out there who don't want to pay the smartphone 30 dollars a month for Verizon. I'd definatly recommend this to anyone.

This is a neat phone. Wish it had a bigger screen. Makes it very easy to get to contacts and has neat short cuts. Light weight. Has a full touch screen keyboard. You can turn it 3 ways to use. Good battery life. Has touch lock. Love the software and has nice wallpaper to choose from. Sound quality pretty good. Loud enough and others are clear. The extra keyboard you can attach may not be so user friendly but without it --May not be so easy for those text addicted. I only text maybe 20 times a week so for me it isn't that big a deal but for calling and light texting it works for me. Most definite be sure to have protection for it. Screen easy to scratch. I have had a lot of phones this is my favorite than the voyager both by LG.

The worst phone I have ever had the misfortune to have. The screen freezes constantly, the battery stops working after a while, the calls don't get received. I had to get this phone replaced four times. Finally, I am getting a new one. Really, Verizon does not have a great selection of phones that aren't smartphones.
