I bought this washer about 15 months ago. The motor failed just over a year; the rotor contains a plastic piece that connects to and turns the tub. The teeth in the plastic piece are broken, and it can't turn the tub. I'm surprised that they use cheap plastic in the key part of the washer. I'm sure I'm not the first one having this problem.

When our top loader died a few weeks back we decided it was finally time to try a front loader. After checking reviews on a lot of different sources (epinions, amazon, consumerreports, jdpowers, buzzillions) I decided on an LG but a different model.

I went to sears and they didn't have the model I had settled on - they directed me to this one. More checking of reviews ensued. I ended up buying this from Sears. On sale, + 5% off for using my sears account plus no financing for a year it was a reasonable deal. $665.00.

My husband did the pick up and installation and that was easy. (Don't forget to take out the shipping bolts!)

There were two things that stood out right away when we ran our first few loads -

1) The clothes were WAY cleaner than they had been in our top loader. I mean, seriously, I don't even know how to describe it. Just, wow, I didn't know a washing machine could get things so clean.

2) The dryer time was cut in half or better. A load of towels will dry in 20 minutes on the permanent press setting! AWESOME!

On the down side the cycle times are a little longer - Averaging just under an hour. The sanitize cycle is 1hr40-min. One reviewer had a complaint about water temperature. I have no idea how hot the water gets and will never have the energy to figure it out. I'm happy enough just seeing how clean everything is. Dish towels run in the sanitize cycle came out smelling clean. Yay!

The machine has a speed wash that will complete in just under 30 minutes. How cool is that? If you are behind on your laundry and just need to get some loads through you can have loads going through every half hour and you don't have to wait for the dryer because the clothes are spun dry so well their dry time is short.

The only real down side is that it is a myth to think you are now free to wash bulky things like king comforters. The load won't balance to spin and so the machine just keeps trying to balance it but it can't. However, I think it will work to wash the bulky items and stand by for the spin cycle. Just pull the clean comforter out and air dry it. (or squeeze it out yourself and put it in the dryer.

We debated on the 179.00 for an extended warranty. Based on the 10 year motor warranty and 3 year drum warranty we're skipping the extended warranty. I'll check back here if that turns out to have been a terrible mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!! Great Results, August 18, 2009
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
Pros: Quality, Features/Settings, easy to use, Performance, Style/Design

"Our top load washer bit the dust and I had been considering a front load washer so I purchased this model because of the features and 10 yr motor warranty. I am amazed at the huge load of towels this machine is capable of washing and is very quiet except when filling with water. The wash times are average but with the very first load we noticed that stains that normally had to previously be pre-treated came clean without doing anything with this machine. My wife loves how clean and fresh they come out and it uses so little detergent it's hard to believe they could come out so clean. Water and electricity savings are to be expected as the machine spins the laundry so much drier than any other machine we've owned in the past. I wish I had bought one sooner!! We also bought the matching dryer along with the pedestals and couldn't be happier with our purchase. Our old clothes seem to be renewed with these machines."

I bought this LG 2101HW with Matching Dryer, works great, 4.0 cubic feet is a lot for a family of 3 to 4, the washer is very quiet, you can only hear it when water pump sucking the water out. stuffed almost twice as much as we used to do in our old top loader (whirlpool super plus capacity) and it is easy for the washer, use less than 1/3 of the water, only need to soak cloths not like the top loader, it spins at high speed so when wash is done all the cloths are half dry. the dryer has a sensor, normally it took us 2 hrs to dry our laundry, for this LG only 40 minutes, you do the math. the only draw back is you have to use HE detergent, but it won't cost the same, so I am totally happy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable and bad services, December 20, 2010

I bought this washer about 15 months ago. The motor failed just over a year; the rotor contains a plastic piece that connects to and turns the tub. The teeth in the plastic piece are broken, and it can't turn the tub. I'm surprised that they use cheap plastic in the key part of the washer. I'm sure I'm not the first one having this problem.

The worst part of this ordeal is to deal with their services. The rotor is supposed to be warrantied for 10 years. However, the service person told me that the warranty was voided because I attempted to repair myself. Since I can't wait for two weeks for their "official" repair person to come to visit (I'm living in Austin, Texas; a decent sided city, not a remote village), I did end up fixing the machine myself, and having to pay for purchasing the rotor. My request to have the part reimbursed was repeatedly refused. The reason given is that they don't ship parts to customers directly. If so, why do they claim the 10 year warranty? It's so frustrating to deal with customer support whose only job is say NO if they can. I'm so surprised that LG doesn't care about customer satisfaction at all. I'll really think twice because I buy any LG again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this so far, June 11, 2010
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
Unfortunetly I had my washer break and had to go get a new one all in one day because we live in a very small town and had only that day to get to the city so I had no time to read reviews. I'm a huge review reader so this was very hard for me. I used the online feature on my phone to look while we shopped, but still not the same. So needless to say I was very skepticle and tried my best to compare a few washers and dryers at a few different stores.
I'm very glad to say that after a few weeks, I am nowhere near dissapointed and had I had the time to review I probably would have bought these anyway. The morning after we bought these and before I unpacked them I did read as much as I could and I only got more excited. (We also bought the matching dryer) I take a LOT of pride in my laundry, and thought I was pretty good at it already. Our top loader was about 9 years old and it did just fine so I wasn't even in the market. My laundry is so clean and even more fluffy now and it smells amazing! I can actually smell the fabric softner better and it's evenly dispensed so not oily looking stains on the darks. I think I have washed everything in my house 3 times ;O) just for fun. My poor little kids are lucky to have clothes on them because I'm constantly looking for things to throw in the wash! I think the hot water setting and internal heater work just fine because the glass gets all steamy, however my hot water heater is on the other side of the wall from the washer so it doesn't have far to travel. I can see with the spurts of water how it wouldn't travel a whole house well and stay hot and that seemed to be some peoples complaint. Fortunetly I don't have that problem. I have also never expected complete silence from a washer and dryer... get a sound proof room if you need it that bad... it's laundry! As others have wrote... the water filling is louder than the rest of the cycle but I can't believe how little water it uses. The spurts come from the fact that this thing is so smart it measures just the right amount of water for each load! Think of the money I'm saving! And then to top it off my dryer is super "smart" too... it knows when the clothes are dry on the sensor dry and adjusts the time to it. The only problem I have had with that is not really a problem.. the sensor can't always tell when a blanket is still damp on the inside so it will lessen the time... I just adjust the blanket and use the timed dry setting instead of the sensor....
I hope this product still remains wonderful for years... it also has a ten year motor warranty on the washer! And I super LOVE all the "bells and whistles" AKA all the different choices I have for my differnt types of loads to include the time delay setting... cause lets face it... not all loads of laundry are the same!

5.0 out of 5 stars LG front loader washer, January 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
I was tired of the old washer leaking all over my floor. The things that attracted me to this washer were the efficiency, the quietness, the high speed spin (dryer clothes), the direct drive motor (no mechanical gears etc.) and the sump to catch the water it does spill. Also It doesn't have a seal in the bottom of the tub to spring a leak, there is no bottom of the tub.
My experiences so far (only had it a while) are very good. No water on the floor. The sump drain only gets about a quart or less of water after a few loads. It is very quiet, though you do hear it at times. It is insanely simple to use. It may look complicated, but it isn't. You just dump your clothes in and your detergent in the reservoir, select the type of cycle you want with the knob. and push the go button. Now it will display a lot of lights in columns showing what options are default for the chosen cycle, if you want to change any of these you can use the buttons below the lights to toggle through the choices for that option before hitting go, but the defaults will get you through. It does get your clothes clean and it does get them quite a bit dryer. Also we set ours on our concrete slab floor and haven't had one iota of trouble with shaking at any time.

Still the thing is new and we haven't had it long, but we're very happy now.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a difference!, February 19, 2010

Karen (Rockville, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
We previously had a front loader when living overseas and found the results to be absolutely remarkable. In fact, we had lamented the loss of our front loader when returning to the states. So when it was time to replace our current 15 year old Whirlpool, there was no question we would be going with a front loader. Without a lot of time to spare, we went with the LG based on our previous experience.

I'm pleased with the result. I would say that LG appears to tailor their programs country by country. We noticed that the LG program in the US is noticeably shorter (only 50 minutes for a normal cycle, rather than 120 minutes which we had before). Only with the Sanitize program can you get a proper European 120 minutes or so cycle, and unfortunately that cycle time is only available at that very high temperature. I suppose with Americans doing on average 8 loads per week, a 2 hour cycle would be a bit much.

Despite my desire to have a longer cycle for lower temperatures, clothes are clean when they come out anyways. So perhaps the longer cycle is superfluous. Highly recommend this washer to anyone, and don't be afraid of the front loader! Just keep the door open between loads to air it out.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER!!!!!, January 16, 2011
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
I wish there was the option to give this a zero star rating.... Where do I begin???
It worked okay at first, my clothes were never supper clean; especially whites, they never were really white. Infact, after washing brand new white sox I noticed that they were suddenly dingy. My old top load washer, that cost 1/4 as much as this one, washes clothes better. But that's not even the issue that bothers me the most.
After about a year, my washer and everything washed in it began to smell like moldy sewer water. It is terrible. I want to vomit after I open my washer.
We have an extended waranty and have called twice about this issue. The first time, the technition told us to use tide washing machine cleaner. After using tide washing machine cleaner every week for the past four months, the smell has not gone away. It's only become worse. (By the way you should only have to use the washing machine cleaner once a month!) So I started to scrub the tub out with bleach every week before using the washing machine cleaner. This not only didn not work, but was extremely restrating because it still smells terrible even after putting so much time and effort into it.
So we called the technition again. I don't even know why they waste their time, as well as ours, to come out to our house. He did nothing! He tells us we that LG will not replace it and to try running four cups of bleach through it.
I am extremely nervous to run any bleach through it, as I had to stop using bleach about a year ago, because even a tea spoon in my whites would bleach several loads after.
LG does not stand behind their replacement warranty!!! All they do is send someone out to our house, who by the way, was extremely condesending, to blow smoke up our ass!
I wish I could go back in time and buy a different washer, but I can't, so I will just pass the message on, DO NOT BUY THIS WASHING MACHINE!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good machine, June 7, 2011
This review is from: LG 4.0 CF WASHER FRONT CONTROL WHITE
I chose the LG WM2101 HW due to Consumer Reports rating. I ordered the optional pedestal and extended service plan from Home Depot also. I have owned the unit for one month and have no complaints. The unit was placed in my basement which has a cement floor so vibration is not an issue. The unit does "thump" a little when first it starts to spin, but then quiets down. The washer does not use as much water as my twenty year old Maytag top loader, but gets the clothes clean gently. I purchased the optional pedestal. It works well, but is too expensive.

I was concerned about the mildew issue mentioned on this site and others. At the end of laundry day, I wipe down the door, gasket and soap tray. I leave the front door and the soap dispenser tray open when the unit is not being used. So far, no odors.

Update... 14 months now I have owned this washer. Still is OK. There has been a few times the washer did not spin the water out of the load. I think the problem was an unbalanced small load. I've found out that it is best to do full loads ,if you can. My water bill has dropped $20.00 a month.
