My old Maytag finally died after about 10 years. I guess that's a good shelf life although the only thing wrong was that the transmission was leaking and getting tiny oil stains on my clothes. Apparently you can't purchase new "seals" and just have to replace the whole transmission which is, of course, cost prohibitive. My wife wanted a front loader to save on the utility bills. The reason we settled on the LG was the larger 4.2 cu ft. There were only one or two models that were bigger but they were way over $1000 which was our cut off. We bought it at Sears because they have, in my opinion, the BEST customer care out there. Anytime we have to buy a major appliance Sears is where we go. Anyway - here are the perks:
1. I cannot believe how little water this thing uses. I'd never seen a front loader in action before but instead of an entire basin filling with water if you can imagine it's almost like there are a bunch of tiny "water guns" circling the rim that occasionally shoot some water out on the clothes.
2. There is a spot for detergent, another for bleach, another for fabric softener, and one extra spot that I put a little Borax in. All this is in a tiny "drawer" that opens and closes at the top of the machine.
3. It spins the clothes for about a minute to automatically determine what the load size is and adjusts the water level accordingly.
4. There are TONS of different wash and rinse combinations. Most take at least an hour to do but they also have a "speed wash" that took 20 minutes from start to finish. I used this cycle once after my wife had an allergic reaction to a new shower soap we tried. Some of the allergens were in the sheets but they weren't soiled or dirty and consequently that option came in very useful.
5. It has INCREDIBLY FAST spin cycles that get the clothes alot closer to dry which means less dryer time.
6. I think it's pretty quiet although we have it in our basement so that's not a critical issue.
7. There's a child lock button you can press so that if you have small children that think it's fun to press all the different lighted flashing buttons they can do so to their hearts content without messing up your washing instructions.
The CONS: (I should point out that these have to do with ALL Front Loaders and nothing really specific to the LG).
1. First and foremost THE PRICE. We paid just under $1000 for the washer itself. When I was leaving Sears I noticed that most of the top loaders were less than $500. True our utility bills will be less but it'll be quite a while before we make up that loss.
2. These washers have so many bells and whistles that they all now have little computers instead of just some simple nobs. To me I worry that there is now alot more that can go wrong with them and might be costly to repair but before buying a front loader I checked with our repair guy who said to date they haven't really had any problems with them.
3. Once you hit "start" you're committed. Unlike the top loader that will allow you to add a few more clothes that you might have forgotten - this one locks the front door after you hit start and won't unlock until it's done spinning.

All in all I have no complaints so far (other than price). It does a great job getting the clothes clean and at a fraction of the utility cost that our old top loader did. Let's keep our fingers crossed that I get at least another 10 years out of this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective, quiet, efficient, December 14, 2009

We've had this washer for about a year. We chose this model after considerable research, and a budget of up to $1,000. It has proven to be completely satisfactory. Controls are intuitive. Didn't take much to learn how to use. I suggest you read the manual to understand the amount of soap to use - this machine seems to require less detergent than expected. We find that 1/2 the recommended dose on the detergent bottle is sufficient for most loads. (We have softened water.) Also, be sure to use HE detergent.

One nice energy saving feature is the effectiveness of the spin cycle. I've noticed that the subsequent drying cycle takes much less time versus our previous (HE) washer.

We mostly use the normal cycle, but also use the sanitizing cycle on occassion. Wash time is variable because the system is 'load sensing'. Sanitize can take twice as long - no surprise, but worth it when we need it.

Note: I did note that some people have issues with musty oders in the wash drum. This applies to most similar machines. We are not experiencing that problem, however, we are in the habit of 1) wiping the door and seals after washes, 2) leaving the door open until the interior is dry. There is a 'wash tub' cycle for smelly tubs. (We haven't used it yet, but it is good to know it is there.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, November 13, 2009
This review is from: LG : WM2455HW 27 Front-Load Washer - White
After much research, we bought this washer 8 mos ago. Hope I'm not jinxing it by saying I LOVE IT! Our machine sits on a cement floor in the basement. Hubby leveled right to left, back to front - easy to do; worth every second. Haven't had any problems with noise nor shaking. As a matter of fact, it is located in the same room as our computer & TV- not a problem. Our old drier is louder than the washer! Whites come out sparkling white & love the easy to push functions for soil level & water temp. I read many people have had problems with mold & smells. No problem here. I've even left a load in for 2 days. Rewashed it- came out fine. Generally we keep the door open between loads (and normally I don't leave the loads in for more than a day!) Seems silly, but I really like the pleasant charm that rings when the wash load is done. Would recommend....

5.0 out of 5 stars Pause button let's you keep adding to load, May 26, 2010

This review is from: LG : WM2455HW 27 Front-Load Washer - White
These LG washers have a pause button, which stops the motor and unlocks the door, so you can keep adding clothes to them throughout the wash cycle. They use so little water that nothing actually pours out when opened.

This is our second LG front loader and we love the extra capacity. We can wash our king-size down comforter in it. The wash is so gentle you can forget about future dry cleaning bills.

We paid $700 for ours and also received a $200 combined rebate from our local electric and water utilities (in N. California). We've had zero problems with both our LG washers (5 years and counting for the first one and 6 months for this one).

I am not a picky buyer or difficult to please. We have had this washer for almost one year and it has a lingering musty, moldy smell. We have called LG and they advocate all responsibility. Be prepared to spend endless dollars on bleach and extra washing cycles just to keep the inside of the washer from smelling musty. Also the musty smell is passed onto your clothing especially your bath towels. Picture getting out of the shower smelling fresh only to dry yourself with a musty basement towel. You will always need to leave the washer door open to avoid that musty smell and perform a lot of cleaning maintenance to keep it smelling clean. I understand this issue is associated with most front loaders. Do yourself a favor and google "front loader washer smell".

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LG : WM2455HW 27 Front-Load Washer - White
The washer came damaged. I called the comnpany and they told me to take the tag off and dispose of the item. They would refund my money. I did this and now they are telling me that they never received the tag. I have disputed the charge on my credit card. BEWARE!!
