Grade 7 Up?This first book in the series sets up three teens on their maiden mission for a secret government agency called The Tower. Jo, Caylin, and Theresa are recruited right out of high school, trained, and then sent merrily on their way to London by Uncle Sam, The Tower's faceless head honcho. It's like an updated version of Charlie's Angels as the girls attempt to infiltrate the U.S. Embassy to spy on dreamy Jonathon Nicholson. The 19-year-old son of the U.S. ambassador is suspected of killing a special agent and of being in cahoots with a terrorist group bent on uncovering the location of missing Soviet nuclear warheads. A ridiculous plot? You bet. Ridiculous characters? Absolutely. The girls are one-dimensional images of the hippest babes ever to graduate, and every male is Apollo incarnate. But despite the lack of literary value in this book, the author's sassy, slang-filled style could appeal to that same set of model wanna-bes that the Spy Girls represent. The teens are unbelievably savvy for 17-year-olds, but they are also independent, smart, and loyal. Plus, it is hard to argue against every girl's dream?to be put into a situation where she can save the world.?Linda Bindner, formerly at Athens Clarke County Library, GA
