I ordered several of the books for Christmas gifts. They all arrived promptly in two separate shipments, free shipping. Beautifully bound book. I didn't really know what to expect in the back of the book... the (reproduction) original 1936 Life magazine (Wow !! ) .... Absolutely everything, the advertisements from 1936 (etc.) ... oh what fun.. I'm impressed and very happy.

This is a heavy and a really big coffee table book; and therein lays my major complaint. It could have been more of the height and width of a Life magazine, which would make for easier handling. It is actually uncomfortable to hold and read; in fact about the only comfortable way to read this is to sit at a table with it lying in front of you. I guess that does make it, truly, a coffee table book. It weighs over 9 pounds and is 12" wide and 16" high. Of course it does have a replica of the first Life magazine inserted in the back cover, which is probably one reason for its' size.
This replica is well done, one could not easily tell; except for its new feel that it is a copy. It is fascinating to look through and they do some explaining in the body of the book, for their reasons and even mistakes in doing the cover story. The advertisements are as fascinating as the articles; and for those of us that remember Life in its later years, we can see the differences - how jumpy the coverage was in this 1st issue
One very good quality is that for a book this heavy, the binding and the way it is put together is done in a very sturdy method. One question that occurs is that on page 53 there is the same captioning as the page before...was this in the original book? Or did the proof readers here goof?

The pictures are not in chronological order, but grouped by subject areas. As one turns these pages and sees the events and personalities, it is a history lesson for some and a remembrance for others. In fact at times, it can evoke strong emotions - like turning the page to see the pictures and deaths of one day in Vietnam. I still remember those 12 pages with sadness. This edition shows small copies of 6 of those pages on one black sheet - it's still a shock, as so many of these sorts are.

A truly wonderful photographic record of events and people who have shaped 75 years of life in our world. The photographs
capture and seize iconic moments and personalities frozen in time for perpetuity. A time capsule of photographic mastery.
Every home should have a copy. Powerful!

Came across this in December looking for a token gift for my in-laws. Didn't expect much of a response from them other than a thanks (I've given up getting creative for them as they are in their early 80's and never want anything new).

Big surprise! They called me soon after Christmas to say that it was the best gift ever. They sat for hours pouring over the photos and history that started pretty much at their birth. It brought back wonderful memories to them of the world as they knew it and couldn't thank me enough for taking such thought in their gift. Um, special shout out to Amazon's recommendation program in deciding that I would probably like this book...

My in-laws have since lent the book out to 3 other couples in their retirement community and have received rave reviews from all their friends regarding it.

Anyone that can remember the early Life magazines will love this book. Compilations of 75 years worth of iconic photos, covers and stories just takes your breath away. As you look at the pictures you also slowly realize that this used to be our common thread; you will recognize faces, places and images that are known to the whole world. Before the Internet there was a handful of magazines that chronicled our lives. I like the way the timelines run, grouped by theme and not by just years, making the journey more enjoyable. Would make a great gift for anyone, and hopefully it will be shared with newer generations by telling the stories they remember while looking through this book.

This book made for a fantastic gift. The recipient absolutely loved the book. It has vibrant photos and interesting articles, and the recipient gort a kick out of the reproduction of the first issue, including the ads (the one for Camel cigarettes suggesting one as a palate-cleanser between each course of Thanksgiving dinner had us all cracking up).

The book is perfect for the coffee table or for a guest room or waiting room of an office, as it has things that will interest everyone. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially for anyone who enjoys history, trivia, and Americana. One caution- the book is very large and heavy. From the description, I knew it was not the typical 8x11" book, but it is even heavier than I thought.

Yet another 'Best of...' book about the world's greatest photo magazine. After the weekly folded in 1972 and the monthly folded in 2000 then another go at a weekly which folded in 2005 Time is left with magazine specials and anniversary editions like this one to generate income. All the top photos in these pages, that appeared in the magazine over the years, have been reprinted many times, especially in the last anniversary book `Life: the first fifty years 1936-1986'.

This book though does have some interesting things going for it. A large format, at sixteen inches deep, making stunning photos and even more impressive and printed on a good matt art paper with a 175 screen. The layout and typography is probably the best I've seen in any Life book. The back pages reproduce thumbnails of all the weekly covers from issue one and nicely all the special editions and books right up to the magazine edition of this book.

The cherry on the cake for me was the facsimile of the first edition inside the back cover. (If you're buying a pre-used copy I suggest you check with the seller that this is included, I've already seen a copy where the seller stated it wasn't) The production is probably better than the original, the paper certainly is and I doubt it had a thicker cover paper like this one. It's a pity the heading and captions are missing on page fifty-four, a heading and caption from the previous page is used and on sixty-nine the caption is missing above a photo. Hard to imagine why these mistakes happened.

If you are too young to remember Life this book is a good introduction to a magazine that presented some of the world's best photojournalism to several million readers each week for several decades from 1936. If you want the same photos a more conventional format check the remarkable Great Life Photographers.
