I've never been to Scandinavia, but author John Raikkonen
made me feel as if I had been there during the turbulant
war stricken Finnish Russian war, to beautiful peaceful landscapes of one
young boys adventurous and uncertain adolescence to a young man eager to
become part of the great melting pot of United States.
I loved this book because his voice rings so clear and true. Not only
does he make me see the things he sees, he makes me feel the things he
feels.
The night train from Oulo was speeding through the late summer landscape.
It was twilight. The full moon was hanging low, barely over the tree tops,
casting its glow over the newly harvested fields. It became a moon's laser
show, when the train plowed through the forest close to the tracks, casting
its light in pulsating beams. The steam clouds from the engine added ghostly
harmony to the show. I sat glued to the window admiring the sight.
Life is an Amazing Song is filled with interesting characters like Stranos
the Russia war prisoner who young Juha befriends, his myschievious cousin
Rake and his younger sister Inga and his hard working Mother who he longs to be
reunited with after being sent to live with unknown relatives in far off Sweden.
Filled with interesting bits and pieces of history this charming tale is suitable
reading for all ages

This book brought me into the author's life. I can not even imagine what life was like during that time, during war and fearing for safety, but this author spoke from true life experiences. Reading a truly amazing story, a very humorous and still serious tale about this man's life, was the best "read" I have had in years... the first book that I could not put down in a while. This book left me wanting for more. I hope that this author comes up with another writing...

This was truly a heartwarming and exciting journey through a young boys life! It had me captured in time in Finland all the way through the stormy journey on the SS United States. I could feel his excitement, nervousness and happiness... I laughed and cried....definetely a must read! I'm glad I chose this as the first book to read on my new Kindle!!!!

I read the book in 2 nights, which tells you, I didn't want to put it down. The story line was very interesting and perhaps the greatest thing about your book is that each character and scene was colorful and vivid in my mind's eye. The details of the scenery that were provided allowed me to see it all in my imagination and I loved that. It takes a good book to hold my interest and this one did the trick. I adored little Juha and my heart broke for his mama when he left for America. I have come to take my American birthplace for granted, but I felt the excitement he felt when he crossed the sea and entered my country for the first time.

I tend to be a picky reader but I loved this book and was really excited it was available on Kindle. You'll laugh, you'll get teary-eyed! The author's humor and sensitivity shines through and I recommend this one as a must-read, especially for those with Scandinavian roots.
