Book Description

August 1, 2011
In this expanded tenth-anniversary edition of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling book, LIFE returns to the story that it chronicled with such immediacy following the devastating, heartbreaking, and inspiring events in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. These pages bear witness to the horrific losses of 9/11 but also celebrate the inspirational bravery of those who persevered, risking their lives in unpredictable and terrifying circumstances. This became the document of the day, the book Americans needed at the time-and can gain some measure of understanding from once more. ONE NATION was and is, as the Wall Street Journal said ten years ago, "a thoughtful and thorough telling."

This expanded edition includes a new foreword by Tom Brokaw, reflections on how the nation has changed in the decade since 9/11, updates on the people involved that day, and new and exclusive portraits by award-winning photographer Joe McNally, who made indelible pictures at Ground Zero in the immediate aftermath of the tragic event.

For decades, Americans have turned to LIFE to see, understand, and remember the most important events of history. In addition to a powerful array of photographs taken by many of the world's greatest photographers, ONE NATION includes original essays by some of our finest writers. Contributors include David McCullough, Maya Angelou, James Bradley, Melissa Fay Greene, Margaret Carlson, Bob Greene and many others. To re-read these pieces today is to revisit an astonishing moment. There is an immediacy and passion to the writing that speaks, just as the photographs do, to what 9/11 was-and meant to us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant Remembrance September 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approaches it is important and appropriate to reflect on those shocking and tragic events. They were transformative on many levels, and have been seared deep in the memories of those who witnessed them. For the better or worse, they have brought a major change in the US foreign policy. In subsequent years political debates over the exact nature and effects of those policies have managed to take away much of the spotlight away from 9/11 proper. It would be desirable to for at least some time put aside politics and solemnly reflect on tragedy that happened a decade ago. LIFE's "One Nation - 10 Years Later" is a poignant and gripping reminder of the events of 9/11 and their immediate aftermath.

Most of the photographs and stories deal with the collapse of the Twin Towers, but that's to be expected. While they stood erect they were a proud and majestic symbol, and this was precisely why they were chosen as a target. Their iconic symbolism has been retained for all of these years. Nonetheless, I wish there had been more information and pictures of the attack on Pentagon and the downing of the flight 93.

One of this book's biggest virtues is the photojournalistic depiction of the events. You get to relive those minutes and hours as if they were enfolding in front of your very eyes. For me the most engrossing set of photographs were the collection of still images that captured the impact of the plane on the second tower. The images feel like a nightmare that is painfully slowly enfolding in front of you.

The book also contains several reflections by some very notable writers from around the World. The contributors in this category include James Bradley, Andrei Codrescu, David M. Sribman, Alan Brinkley, Melissa Fay Greene, Regina Barreca, Judson D. Hale, Nancy Gibbs, Thomas Keneally, Frank Deford, Bob Greene, Margaret Carlson, and David McCullough. Most of the reflections are very personal and intimate, and they deal with memories and emotions that these authors had experienced on that tragic day. The reflections are fresh and original, and a few of them might raise an eyebrow. They bring various perspectives on 9/11 from people whose vocation in life is to put intangibles to words.

9/11 has also brought out some of the best virtues in all of the people who had been affected by it. That day witnessed incredible feats of self-sacrifice, endurance, fortitude and compassion. This book profiles several of the heroes and the ordinary people who had stepped up on that fateful day. Their stories and memories are an indelible contribution to the tapestry of that momentous event.

The events of 9/11 ought to be appropriately commemorated and remembered. This beautiful hardcover LIFE book is an appropriate and valuable resource that will guard you from forgetting that day and what it signifies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought back many sad memories November 2, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
We are born New Yorkers having lived there almost 64 years before coming to Indiana. Fortunately, my husband was in New Jersey at the time of the tragedy but we had many friends and relatives who worked blocks away from the Towers. The survival stories are faith inducing and the bravery of ALL is beyond belief. People who stopped their journey down the stairwells to help those in distress were amazing and truly heroic. We will re-read this book many times, not just on 9/11.

The pictures capture the whole story. The narrative tells the story as it happened. Both pictures and narrative are excellent. Those who remember will want to get a copy.
