2.0 out of 5 stars Life
This book contained a very biased segment of American life, mainly that of immoral Hollywood and Washington. What of the families and individuals of America that put this nation together, the farmers, school teachers, workers, the miners, soldiers, etc. whose contributions are not protrayed adequately in this book.

Richard Stolley and Mr. Chiu take their years of experience and powerfully depict how the Century has been changed through events. They have put it all together in this MUST HAVE book for all ages. This book will show your children and your grandchildren how the 20th Century was shaped. Today people are visual and the pictures captured and selected in this book show the way this nation and world has progressed, taken steps back and yet still, moved forward through time. This book is meant to be placed on top of the coffee table and left there by itself! Great conversation starter for family and friends. To find one book that actually shows 100 years of History in a visual sense is THE Book of the Century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Slice of History, December 29, 1999

This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
I purchased this book on the reputation of Life Magazine and I was definitely not disappointed. It must be truly one of the most amazing and informative treatments of our last century thanks to so many of the famous and not so well known figures and moments that brought our world to where it is today. The quality of photos and script are unique, first rate and yet quite familiar to anyone who has been a fan of Life Magazine over the years. I consider this heavy reflection of our last 100 years one of the best examples of REAL history I could own. My grandchildren will come to know and appreciate their heritage thanks in part to the facts and reflections of events far more impacting than I could ever envision. This will be a valuable complement to my collection of anything 20th century.

Life comes shining through with yet another beautiful books that proves "a picture is worth a thousand words". Watching my 10 year old son slowly turning the pages and reading amazed me as he usually is not interested in history. These are not just ordinary pictures but ones that will make you stare and think about the subject. This book was put together with great thought and covers an amazing amount of material.

I bought this book to give as a present for Christmas with the thought in mind that it would be a good keepsake for the new millenium. Now I'm having trouble giving it away. It is a great book for young and old. For the young to learn about the past and for the old to read and think - remember when?

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! Exceded my expectations in every way!, December 16, 1999
This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
When I bought this book, I was torn between this title and Peter Jenning's photo essay Century. (This is one time when I would have liked to have been able to browse both before buying). In the end it came down to Life's stellar reputation in the field of photojournalism. To make a long story short, I don't think I could have made a better purchase. This book is better than I could have hoped for.

There is just enough written commentary in the book to fill in the gaps for the reader. The editors have wisely decided to let the photographs themselves serve as a visual commentary.

I had intended to give the book as a gift for my wife, but when I took the book out of the box I started browsing through it and became so obsorbed by the book, my wife came home from work while I was still reading it and before I had a chance to hide it.

So, two weeks early, it has been on the coffee table. With the holidays coming on, there have been many visitors to the house and most pick up the book. I have yet to hear a negative comment about the book. Instead the comments go like this: "Gosh, I remember that!" as one of my guests are transported in a nostalgic time machine. It has been a long time since I was as pleased with any book as I have been with this one; I expect it will be a long time before I will be please with another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Truly AMAZING Pictures reflecting America's Past 100., December 13, 1999
This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
Life magazine has gotten the updates on American life for the past century. This periodical guided us through our tradegy and our joy, from the World Wars to the Kennedy assacination to the 90's internet era. Beautiful images in the collection truly portray the past one hundred years with clarity, color, and emotion. A magical gathering with excellent photography; I highly reccomend the investment in this treasure.

I selected this book as a Christmas present for my father, but it turned out to be a gift for our whole family. My Great-Grandfather, 97 years old, was able to enjoy and share memories of each decade represented in this book. The pictures with brief descriptions are both captivating and educational at the same time. Share this book with each generation of your family and the generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in school!, April 10, 2000

This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
I gave this book to my brother-in-law as a Christmas gift thinking he would really enjoy the historical aspect of the book, after-all he is 55 years old and a HUGE part of history already. Much to my surprise, he and my sister-in-law were appalled at the books content stating "it wasn't appropriate for their child" and the book was "full wars, riots and famine" and we live in an "evil world"! Well I've got news for you... There is beauty as well as graphic photography but, ITS HISTORY, AND WE ARE ALL PART OF THAT HISTORY! You can either hide your head in the sand, or be proud of where we have been, who we are and where we are going! Their kind of narrow-minded statements couldn't have been farther from the truth...God has shed His Grace on us, from sea to shining sea, and I for one couldn't be more proud of the book and how it depicts our rich history! Every child should have this as required reading in school. Its the best history book I have ever seen or read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating material that is sure to keep your attention, December 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
I purchased this book as a gift. I will have trouble giving it away. I spent hours looking through the photos and reading the captions. Many events I had never known of, or had forgotten about. What a wonderful way to learn, remember or teach. I would highly recommend to everyone! A MUST HAVE BOOK. One word of caution - some photos are graphic and may need explanation to younger readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read me. Turn my pages. Fold my corners., December 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: LIFE: Our Century In Pictures (Hardcover)
One of the best books I have picked up in the past thirty years. Not only does this book show phenomenal pictures from over the past century, it has information on every decade. If you happened to turn your brain off during the sixties and seventies, Life highlights all the ponderous drivel you missed during that blackout span. Great for kids and adults alike.....
