I saw this in a store when it was first published. It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I wish I could frame the photos in this magazine. I bought this one on Amazon as a gift to my sister who is a huge Marilyn fan. It shipped a month early! I can't wait until she receives it, she's going to love it.

I've always been a fan of the LIFE writers and photographers, but this edition of the LIFE magazine exceptionally brilliant. Not only did the photographs and text let the reader into the intimate details of Ms. Monroe's life, but they captured her beauty and personality so flawlessly. I couldn't put the magazine down; it was simply addicting. I would recommend this edition to anyone; especially Monroe fans.

I bought this publication because I thought it would have some good photo's of Marilyn's life and it accomplishes that well. Being interested in Miss Monroe's life and not knowing to much about her I finished the magazine-book being even more interested. It begins with her childhood and pictures of those times up to her stardom. A fairly good narative that is necesary to compress with the many photo's in the 125 page publication. Somehow I missed this copy in the store and found it on the net. There is both a book (which is smaller) and a magazine with stiff cover. I bought both because it seems I am turning into a MM collector and fan nearly fifty years after her passing. I would recommend this book to Marilyn fans or anyone interested in the subject of Marilyn or actresses.

I expected much more from a Life publication, after all M.M was probably Life magazines most frequent cover girl apart from Elizabeth Taylor, so they must have had access to a vast library of celebrated photographers work. Why then choose so many images that appear in nearly every other Monroe book? Many collectors would be overly familiar with most of these pictures.
The editor/art director seemed to favor images of the actress at some distance from the camera, or with her back to it, or her head turned away or else partially obscured, if it's shadowy, blurred or grainy so much the better. Is that tiny speck really Marilyn in hot pants in Central Park? who cares!
Am I being too harsh? let's see- barring the front & back cover- of the 120 photos included, only 18 are in color. So.. How shall we allocate this valuable color ink resource? Hmmm...well! let's have one (full page) color photo of a B&W photograph, also one (full page) photo of M.M's tombstone, and one double page spread of 'Misfits' Marilyn jumping on the beach ( one page of which is just sea & sky), how about a double page spread of a blurry close-up by Eve arnold, (a shadowy sliver of face on one page and just black background filling the other),or a photo of a western union telegram, and a photo of her passport (with B&W id photo), 2 small magazine covers of no special quality in the corner of a page of type, a harsh flash wedding photo with gloved hands covering mouth & nose and a veil obscuring the rest, Norma Jean at the beach head turned down & away from camera, three famous Milton Greene pics squashed onto one page (the ballerina skirt ones) the largest of which features no visible face just blonde hair, that leaves just four more color shots & I'm afraid none are as attractive as the cover photo.

They had this on the news stand awhile ago. It was the size of a magazine. When I saw it here in hardcover, I thought "What a deal" and had to get it. Unfortunately, it is not the size of the softcover version that was on the news stands. It is quite a bit smaller. Closer to the size of a paperback. It is still a nice book, but I wish it were larger.

The book has numerous wonderful pictures and is certainly a value in that respect.

However, it is not "magazine" or "coffee table" sized, as one might often expect from Life Books.

This needs to be stated here, because the listed dimensions are nonsensical,
and are therefore apt to be justly ignored (0.6 x 6.6 x 0.3 inches on the date of this review…
not dissimilar to a linguini noodle).

I'd have reported the discrepancy under "update product info", but that isn't a flexible option,
in this regard, and so I've reluctantly rated this at one-star,
since most of us read those first, or even exclusively!

This slender but attractively packaged volume is surprisingly replete with interesting information about the life of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic, beautiful and obsessively compelling stars. Marilyn Monroe's rise from obscurity to the very pinnacle of worldly fame and adulation is herein succinctly described in 125 or so pages, which include an abundance of wonderful photographs from LIFE's extensive coverage of her early and later life. The editors give a largely sympathetic review of her career struggles to achieve both artistic success and professional respect in the male dominated, chauvinistic studio atmosphere of the fifties, and document many of the climactic steps and mis-steps along her dizzying ascent to triumphant acclaim, and ultimately to the tragedy of her untimely death.

The brevity of this well-written and generously illustrated account of Marilyn Monroe's fabled but foreshortened life will, however, leave some readers gasping, as I was, for more details of the larger-than-life personalities and earth-shaking events that made these times remarkable and memorable. But no single book could possibly cover so much ground. Fortunately, though, a multitude of writers following Miss Monroe's demise, have addressed this issue, providing a plethora of biographical detail on the life and times of Hollywood's ultimate, and still reigning, Queen. Many of these works are available from Amazon Books.
