Book Description

April 1, 2002
Bob Vosburgh spent 14 years as an Air Force fighter pilot, followed by a decade in corporate America in positions from sales to CEO. He is a keynote speaker, author, consultant and coach. His credentials are the optimum mix of leadership experiences that will add value to leaders of all sorts.

Whether for military or corporate leaders, this book WILL make a difference. Anecdotes from outstanding leaders with real-life examples reinforce

• Self. The need for excellence, valuing mentors and the desire to find the proper balance.

• Team. Clarity in vision and consistency in hiring, firing and empowerment, as well as ensuring accountability.

• Atmosphere. Living a positive example, giving credit where due and generating ongoing enthusiasm by setting the proper short- and long-term goals for your team.

Bob’s rich life experiences are shared throughout the book with entertaining stories that reinforce valuable lessons. His decision-making experience while a fighter pilot, and the outstanding mentors he worked with during that time, all add color to the challenges of leading dynamic organizations. His time as a professor and instructor lend just enough of an academic bent to make the organization of the book easy to read, digestible and organized for later implementation and reference. As a sales representative, sales manager, head of training, architect at the strategic level of a multi-billion dollar organization and CEO of two start-up companies, Bob uses his extensive military foundation and applies it to the challenging world of business. LIFT: Leadership that soars above and beyond is a most enjoyable format for picking up on the critical tasks necessary for today’s leaders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob Soars, February 2, 2003

Overall, I thought it was a very good book. Very insightful, and the anecdotes provided a lot of support and value to the information presented. Obviously well thought out, it was arranged logically and flowed well from chapter to chapter. Although it certainly draws heavily on Bob Vosburgh's air force background, I did not find any limitation or disadvantage to being merely "a civilian". I very quickly could see how he's combined both the military and corporate backgrounds in developing his own style, taking from the best and avoiding the worst, and how he shares that with the reader.

As I read it, I could easily relate my own past experiences, and supervisors, to both the good and bad examples of leadership style he discusses. It also confirmed in me some leadership traits which I'm quite proud of, and provided reflection on ones I know I still need to work on. A good book on leadership should, in my opinion, be thought-provoking and insightful, leading me down the path of critically and objectively reviewing how I am as a manager, and how I want to be as a manager. This book did exactly that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a Lift? You'll get one here..., January 17, 2003
This review is from: LIFT: Leadership That Soars Above and Beyond (Hardcover)
This book is a great mix of motivation and leadership techniques. The author has a real knack for storytelling, and the book is even more readable because he was a top-gun fighter pilot. To keep things fresh, he peppers the book with direct quotes from a variety of people.

Being a marketing consultant, I especially liked his chapter on Clarity.

Instead of reading this front to finish, I'd read one chapter, then go exploring into another topic in the book. And being a pilot myself, I just sat and stared at the front cover alot!
