Bob Soars,

This review is from: LIFT: Leadership That Soars Above and Beyond (Hardcover)
Overall, I thought it was a very good book. Very insightful, and the anecdotes provided a lot of support and value to the information presented. Obviously well thought out, it was arranged logically and flowed well from chapter to chapter. Although it certainly draws heavily on Bob Vosburgh's air force background, I did not find any limitation or disadvantage to being merely "a civilian". I very quickly could see how he's combined both the military and corporate backgrounds in developing his own style, taking from the best and avoiding the worst, and how he shares that with the reader. As I read it, I could easily relate my own past experiences, and supervisors, to both the good and bad examples of leadership style he discusses. It also confirmed in me some leadership traits which I'm quite proud of, and provided reflection on ones I know I still need to work on. A good book on leadership should, in my opinion, be thought-provoking and insightful, leading me down the path of critically and objectively reviewing how I am as a manager, and how I want to be as a manager. This book did exactly that!

This book is a great mix of motivation and leadership techniques. The author has a real knack for storytelling, and the book is even more readable because he was a top-gun fighter pilot. To keep things fresh, he peppers the book with direct quotes from a variety of people.Being a marketing consultant, I especially liked his chapter on Clarity. Instead of reading this front to finish, I'd read one chapter, then go exploring into another topic in the book. And being a pilot myself, I just sat and stared at the front cover alot!

Finally, someone has brought together the military's methods of accomplishiing things with corporate management. And the glue that bonds them in this book is good old entrepreneurialsim. Lots of practical examples, with the underlying phylosophy spelled out clearly. Very much a "how to" book.

An Outstanding Summary of the Elements of Success,
This review is from: LIFT: Leadership That Soars Above and Beyond (Hardcover)
The Author has presented an outstanding collection of the elements of success for both our business and personal lives. Mr. Vosburgh does a great job of combining essential leadership skills with real-life stories to illustrate how his principles are applied in a practical day-to-day manner by some very successful people. There is no ivory tower here! This is real stuff that can be used by any organization, large or small.Anyone who can grasp the leadership qualities described in this book and apply them will be more successful in their endeavors. Unlike many business books, this one is a quick read (2-3 days) with hard hitting points and a lot of real-life stories that made it fun to read.

Merging the Corporate and Military Cultures Together,
By D. Machovic (Montvale, N.J.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LIFT: Leadership That Soars Above and Beyond (Hardcover)
Having worked primarily in Corporate America I was intrigued to read a book that examined the similarities between Mr.Vosburgs'military and business experience. I especially enjoyed the explanation of mentors in the development of Leadership skills. Another interesting topic outlined was on empowerment, and holding people accountable.Especially insightful is that effective managers can only have empowerment if they create a climate built around trust and ownership.Rather than sharing even more insight I recommend you purchase this book when available and draw your own conclusions

Not your typical boring business book! The author has fascinating experience as a military pilot that both entertains and educates the civilian reader. Lots of excellent, concrete business advice and fascination as well. He's done it all!

Lift - Leadership at the speed of sound,
By Bob Sannerud (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LIFT: Leadership That Soars Above and Beyond (Hardcover)
So many books written on leadership are dry, scholarly tomes. I found this to be a book that is easy to read, engaging and hard to put aside. In day-to-day life, what things do you remember most clearly? A news story read on the radio or that same story with pictures on the evening news? If you are like most people the combination of words and images makes the story more memorable. This book elevated my understanding of leadership by combining leadership concepts with real-life stories and examples, thus drawing pictures to go with the concepts. This is a must read. It won't take you three weeks - much less three days - to finish. You'll come away with a new understanding of leadership. |
