Thomas Hindman was one of the few successful Southern generals who had no military experience before the war. Not only was he not a military man he was a politician. To most in the South they expected little of him and probably expected him to be removed and make room for someone with experience, but Hindman proved them wrong.

With his hard fighting in the Army of the Tennessee Hindman earned praise and promotion and was made commander of the Trans Mississippi. While his actions during this time created controversy that lasted the rest of his life he strengthened the department and prevented the loss of all of Arkansas to the Union.

Overall the book is very interesting with his early life being completely dominated by Arkansas politics. My only complaint is that near the end of the book the author consistently calls General Joseph E. Johnson "Johnston." Other than that I have nothing but praise for this unique insight into pre-war politics and the happenings of the least written about theatre of the war.
