this video needs help, January 12, 2001

my son has been a fan of the story "swimmy" so we were looking forward to this video. although the animation is interesting (a bit like eric carle), the soundtrack for this video is the worst! it reminded me of the audio portion of my 5th grade science class slide show. it is all muffled and wobbly and sounds warped. also, the narration for "swimmy" was different than the story and it confused my son. what a disappointment.

five Lionni classics and five reasons to own it, November 19, 2001
This review is from: 5 LIONNI CLASSCS-VHS-C (VHS Tape)
1. Each fable is about 10 minutes in length, so you and your children can watch one or more. 2. there is an even tempo to this lovely simple video not a frenetic, fast paced, flashy, eye sore. 3. each fable has a life-lesson that even the smallest child can understand. 4. this wonderful tape is hard to find, our local library has a copy which we are always taking out so I am looking forward to adding this to our video library. 5. My toddler, who doesn't watch TV, enjoys the stories and this gives me a few moments of down-time. thank you Mr. Lionni!!

substance and style, at an old-fashioned pace, January 17, 2005
This review is from: 5 LIONNI CLASSCS-VHS-C (VHS Tape)
This is our favorite video to watch as a family; the stories are accessible for a child as young as 2 and have content and details which can be appreciated by grown-ups even with repeated viewings. The stories have the simple appearance of animal tales but many deeper layers of meaning for children to grow into. The artwork is simply superb (one of the rare instances of a video not only being true to, but managing to surpass, the original artwork), and the narration and music have a classical bent - not jagged, not too syrupy sweet. Maybe a child who doesn't like Lionni's stories to begin with wouldn't appreciate these, but we very much did and do.
