2.0 out of 5 stars Not really a "in depth" technology book, December 19, 2000
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
Despite the tittle, this book is not a in depth technical book. The author deals most of the time with processes, actions and suggestions of how to do/implement a LMDS Network, but there is a enormous gap when talking about the LMDS tecnology itself. It's a book that was written fast in order to be one of the first in this subject. The consequence is that it was not written for people that already work with Wireless Brodband Systems. It's a book written for people interested in a first and light contact with LMDS. Also there is a lot of acronyms used and not explained in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Emerging standards, October 27, 2000

This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
I beleive that the book is good in general terms. But it contains a lot of terms for which there isn't any explanation in the book. Also it doesn't have any comment about the emerging standards like ETSI BRAN HIPERACCESS and IEEE 802.16.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great step-by-step reference for LMDS deployment, June 22, 2001
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
This is the closest you can get to a dummy's guide on designing and implementing a LMDS or any fixed wireless broadband system. The author draws on his vast experience to detail every step of the deployment process from initial market considerations, cell site planning, network architecture design, selection and installation of equipment, to management of the system when it is up. There is even a chapter devoted to the organisation of the technical department of a LMDS service provider. The book is interspaced with many checklists and charts which provide easy reference.

Readers who can appreciate the scope of such a deployment will be able to realise the value of this book. It may not help you with every aspect of the deployment process as local conditions may be variable, but it will certainly give you a head start. As the author mentioned, theoretical basics have to be sought for elsewhere, as the brief treatment in the book is intended as just an overview of the technology. The business case for LMDS and projected developments were not covered in greater detail, which is a pity.
