Not really a "in depth" technology book,
By Jose Moura (Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
Despite the tittle, this book is not a in depth technical book. The author deals most of the time with processes, actions and suggestions of how to do/implement a LMDS Network, but there is a enormous gap when talking about the LMDS tecnology itself. It's a book that was written fast in order to be one of the first in this subject. The consequence is that it was not written for people that already work with Wireless Brodband Systems. It's a book written for people interested in a first and light contact with LMDS. Also there is a lot of acronyms used and not explained in the book.

Emerging standards,
By Antonis Karvelas (ATHENS, GREECE Greece) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
I beleive that the book is good in general terms. But it contains a lot of terms for which there isn't any explanation in the book. Also it doesn't have any comment about the emerging standards like ETSI BRAN HIPERACCESS and IEEE 802.16.

Great step-by-step reference for LMDS deployment,
By angyh@singnet.com.sg (Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
This is the closest you can get to a dummy's guide on designing and implementing a LMDS or any fixed wireless broadband system. The author draws on his vast experience to detail every step of the deployment process from initial market considerations, cell site planning, network architecture design, selection and installation of equipment, to management of the system when it is up. There is even a chapter devoted to the organisation of the technical department of a LMDS service provider. The book is interspaced with many checklists and charts which provide easy reference.Readers who can appreciate the scope of such a deployment will be able to realise the value of this book. It may not help you with every aspect of the deployment process as local conditions may be variable, but it will certainly give you a head start. As the author mentioned, theoretical basics have to be sought for elsewhere, as the brief treatment in the book is intended as just an overview of the technology. The business case for LMDS and projected developments were not covered in greater detail, which is a pity.

For the Semi-novice,
By Eric Liu (Encino, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
The book was obviously published in a hurry to fill the need for a book with up to date information on the wireless industry and of course, LMDS in particular. It seems to have been written for non-engineers who are interested in this technology and it's applications. It stands well enough as a textbook of sorts for the general methods of deployment, business considerations, and technologies involved. I would say it's a good read for executives involved in the wireless industry. The only major downsides to the book I could really put my finger on are the typos and unexplained terminology which pop up frequently.

Outstanding LMDS Resource,
By A Customer
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
For such a new technology this is a terrific book, detailed but clear, technologically oriented but written with care and clarity. I was having great trouble finding any good info on LMDS and MMDS, now there's a whole book. Recommended to anyone working with or interested in cutting edge wireless applications.

LMDS is on the leading edge of technology,
By "godina" (Ft. Laud., Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
After reading the book LMDS by Clint Smith, I am impressed with his ability to grasp a technology that is relatively new. The thing that strikes me most is Smith's massive research references. Most writers in the field of communication put a spin on their interpretation of these burgeoning technologies. Smith carefully knits a picture through exhaustive research and discussions. Anyone interested in the wireless age should consider this book. Although a little techie-like, it still lays out the full spectrum of an explosive age of communication.

Solid Tech Detail,
By A Customer
This review is from: LMDS: Local Mutipoint Distribution Service (Paperback)
Surprisingly for a book on a cutting edge technology like LMDS, this is filled with detailed technology explanations and exhaustive references. There's terrific converage of implementation issues, a solid layout of basic (and not so basic) LMDS network design guidelines, and a whole section of useful spectrum allocation tables. There's also a chapter on business considerations, which I've already forced on some folks. Excellent read for engineers and tech managers.

Just for non-techie managers,
By A Customer

This book is too general for engineers. It seems that the author wrote this book in the business point of view. Nonetherless, it is lots of typos and hard to read. Definitely not for engineers!
