A nice beginners piece,

I purchased this recorder mostly for the cleaning rod, but also for the look, which was rather more delicate then my first recorder. When it arrived I was semi dissapointed by the fact that it was darker and does appear like plastic, nothing like wood or ivory as I was half way expected. Nothing big, just an observation. Other then that, it does clog much easier then my original soprano Gill recorder and that is frustrating. On the upside, it is easy to clean, the fingering is very easy to find, it's "voice" is more mellow then my original and makes it easier on my family to listen to when I am learning high parts to songs. Definately worth $5 when you include shipping and the joint grease was a nice addition for anyone who has never dealt with that before! Eventually though, a Novice to Advanced player will wish to buy a better recorder to work on and play with. For the beginner though, it's an extreamly nice buy!

LMI Renaissance Recorder,

This recorder is not a true wide bore renaissance recorder, but does have the lower register strength and tone of the older recorders. This recorder travels in my rucksac for a good tute anywhere I go. An excellent buy for a second instument.

Just beyond the level of a childs recorder. Has a rather harshly sharp tone (not that its out of tune sharp) from the whole piece being plastic. Just depends on what your doing with it.

I have two other plastic recorders that I paid $35 and $50 for and this one sounds just as good. It fingers just like a baroque recorder, but I prefer the smooth design. It is a light brown color. The product info says it is in the key of F but I believe it is in C, at least it matches the sound of my baroque soprano recorders. It does clog somewhat easily but not any easier than my other recorders. It is worth every cent of $7, and really quite a bit more.

An attractive entry model for recordists,

I frankly bought this because it *looks* cool. The small picture of it here on Amazon doesn't do it justice: the plastic has a wood-tone color (but it's *not* wood-grained like more expensive recorders) and the LMI logo is relatively unobtrusive. The whole recorder has an elegant look to it. If you took this to a park and practiced you wouldn't look half as silly as you would with a transparent pink recorder pressed to your lips.
The LMI Renaissance Soprano recorder also comes with a cleaning rod. This is an important point, because the transparent Yamaha recorders, although surprisingly well-regarded as musical instruments *do not* come with cleaning rods! Considering the shipping and handling charges for a stick which costs forty cents, I decided to throw in a couple of more bucks and get a second recorder out of the deal. It may not have as good a "voice" as the transparent Yamahas, but it looks a whole lot better, and for someone who is having trouble playing a C note on the recorder, anything which helps to protect the vulnerable ego is a welcome help. (Little kids are not going to yell, "Mommy, that man has a piece of plastic colored like boxwood in his mouth!" I shudder to think of what I'd hear with my transparent green Yamaha sticking out of my mouth in some child-infested park.) |
