Editorial Reviews

Review

“The storytelling is crisp and clean, and the focus is squarely on the child-animal relationships, with a bit of family dynamics worked in.” ―BCCB

“The book is well designed for readers moving up to chapter books, with its short sentences, wellspaced lines of type, and attractive illustrations.” ―Booklist

“The tale of Logan's efforts to locate his lost dog rings completely true…The believable plot and inherent suspense will keep readers turning the pages of this fine addition to early chapter books, which will resonate with both pet lovers and children involved in divorces.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Logan has a best friend and his name is Bear. They do everything together. The only problem now is Logan's parents are separating and his dad wants to take bear with him to the mountains. Logan pleads with his parents and Bear will go with him and his mother to the city. It's hard enough for Logan to have to deal with his parents splitting, he couldn't make it through without Bear. Meet Hannah. She wants a dog. She would bathe it, feed it, and walk it everyday. Her parents don't think she's ready for such responsibility. Instead, Hannah spends her time helping out at the Rainbow Street Shelter. It's not so bad. The animals really need her. On their way to the big city Logan and his mom stop for lunch. When they finish, Bear is no longer in the car. Panic stricken they search everywhere. Bear is lost. When Hannah's dad arrives home in his old pickup, he has a passenger. A happy black and white dog. This was unexpected and Hannah wants to keep him. Unfortunately the dog ends up at the Rainbow Street Shelter. Will Logan ever get Bear back? Will Hannah ever get a dog of her own? Orr has done a wonderful job of putting together a fun serendipity story for kids. Young readers who love animals will be eagerly turning the pages to see what happens with Bear, Logan and Hannah.

This story is easily read by students who have an interest in animal stories. It ties two story lines together for the reader and makes it easy to connect to the feelings of both characters in the story. Enjoy

My animal-crazy kid and I tore through every book in this series inside of a week. She is five and I read these out loud to her: Absolutely rapt. These are all well-written, compassionate and engaging stories that involve exciting chance encounters and surprising twists and sweetness. She was thrilled as each new story brought back situations and characters from the previous books. Beautiful little series, wish there were more!

Logan and his mother are moving to the city while his father moves to work on a ranch. Logan has a dog named Bear and begs for him to come along with him to the city. While in the process of moving the dog runs away. Bear is found by a young girl named Hannah, who is volunteering at the animal shelter. As chance would have it Logan is in the same class with the girl at his new school. As the girl tells the story of the lost dog they both realize that it must be Bear!! Logan and Hannah both learn a lot about pet care and responsibility. This is a great choice for those kids that are just starting to read chapter books. It's the first in a series about the animals at Rainbow Street Shelter.
