Biography

Created in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, by actor Jared Leto and his Older brother, Shannon, 30 Seconds to Mars initially began as a big family project. Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After working with a number of guitarists (including Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler), the three auditioned Tomo Milicevic to round out the band’s official roster. After ... Editorial Reviews

Written and recorded around the world from Europe, to India, to the bands studio in California, LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS was produced by Jared Leto with previous collaborator Steve Lillywhite (U2, The Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel) co-producing four of the twelve tracks. Jared says that this is more than an evolution, its a brand new beginning. Creatively, we have gone to an entirely new place, which is exciting, unexpected, and incredibly inspiring.

LOVE LUST FAITH + DREAMS is the bands fourth studio record. It follows This Is War, which was hailed as an artistic triumph by Alternative Press, a shimmering epic by MTV.com, and contained the No. 1 Modern Rock radio hits This Is War and Kings and Queens. During its two-year tour in support of This Is War, the band sold out arenas around the globe, playing over 311 shows in nearly 60 countries on six continents to three million people and breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest ever concert tour by a rock band. THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS comprising Jared Leto, Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic has sold over 5 million albums worldwide and the bands videos have more than 300 million views on YouTube. The group has received numerous awards, including a dozen MTV awards worldwide, a Billboard Music award and honors from NME, Kerrang! and Fuse.

30STM is the perfect band for me since each album has a different sound.

I will forever be a fan of this band because they do something so well that only a few bands (That I like) can do. . . . . .they evolve and they do it with ease. .

First Album: Hard rock with an industrial edge.

Second Album: Hard rock with a hint of pop.

Third Album: Pop Rock.

This Album: Pop with hints of rock music.

There is nothing wrong with this album. But I am a hard rock and industrial enthusiast, and this album barely shows a hint of the roots that drew me to them with their early stuff. When I hear it I definitely recognize it as them - their sound is still very distinct. But they have made a very big deal with this and the last album about working with big-name producers and I think they've let the sound of those producers take them too far into a very generic direction.

I'd rate this 2.5 stars if it let me - it is well crafted but not made for me, and if you were concerned about the direction they took with their third album this one is even further down that road than before.

I've been seeing a lot of mixed reviews mostly regarding the bands move to using synthesizers and ditching some guitar work, a common move in this new technology/electronic age growing rapidly throughout the world. I find this record to be quite a gem in Thirty Seconds to Mars' discography mainly because each record has its own identity and this one's is the most unique and creative in my opinion. While I love their first two records, both of them have such common elements of alternative rock and post-grunge while their last two records blend so many awesome genres that the music just speaks for itself regarding how awesome and creative it is. I personally the love the record, I wouldn't change a thing about it. I do not call those who have been long time fans 'traitors' if they don't particularly like the album because it is certainly a departure from their previous endeavors. I do however believe that people should keep an open mind and honestly they should just appreciate the music and what it means not only to themselves but to other people. Mow back to the record, I will now proceed by conducting a song by song review with a few words describing why the rate the song that appropriate rating. Enjoy.

1. "Birth" 9/10 - It's a strong opening, something that pumps up the listeners, prepares them for the excitement that proceeds after the brief introduction. I love the brass section, so strong, powerful, great opener.

2. "Conquistador" 9/10 - One of the more rock oriented songs on the record, great riff, great lyrics, terrific vocals. One thing I've always loved about 3STM is Jared's strong vocals and powerful delivery. This record in my opinion properly projects Jared's magnificent voice.

This is a interesting album to put into words. This is a band that started out with a very raw and unique sound. Today they have an even more unique sound, but has the band aged well?

If you listen to all of the albums in order you can hear and appreciate the transition that 30 Seconds has made. If you would listen to this new album after only hearing the first album, you would not know that it is the same band. Gone are many of the heavy guitars and drums from the first release. Programmed drums and loops of synth sounds abound on this release as they did on the previous album. At times it sounds like a move soundtrack and in a way that is what they have created. A soundtrack for our lives. Is it the same sound...no. But one thing always remains with 30STM, raw emotion. Leto sings with full emotion again. If you are looking for more of the same, you might be disappointed, but why would you ever expect "the same" from this innovative band. My only let down is the return for the children backup on many of the choruses.

I think after 100 listens through I might have a different take on this release. I miss the hard rocking heavy guitars that I first fell in love with but as with most things the more time you spend with it, the more you will understand it.

This album seems to be trying to ride off the momentum that was created with the brilliant and powerful, "This Is War". Many elements of the previous record are intact. The choir chants (ohs and whoas), heavy use of synths, and soaring vocals. Like other reviewers have stated, there is just something missing. Lyrically and thematically it seems somewhat lost. The choruses also aren't as strong or memorable on this effort. Songs like "kings & Queens", "Closer to the Edge", "Night of the Hunter", and "Vox Populi" sent chills down my spine. Those tunes had me hitting the accelerator and flying down the Freeway. I can't say so much for this one. It's a shame because "Up in the Air" is a pretty tremendous song, very much in the vain of "This is War". It's definitely worth a listen. Perhaps over time it will grow on me.

It's hard to find the words to describe this album. I found it beautiful and haunting, but everyone will have their own unique take on it. Many people have said this is not true Thirty Seconds to Mars, but it has all the same components as the previous albums, just at times lighter than the other albums. Jared, Shannon, and Tomo made an album to be proud of it. It's intimate and I feel like I get to experience the journey they took to create this with them. I'm proud to have this part of my collection and proud to be part of the Echelon. :)
