Quirky Retelling of an All-Time Favourite, August 15, 2011
This review is from: H.P. LOVECRAFT'S THE DREAM QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH COLLECTOR'S PACK DVD (DVD)
This is billed as an amateur motion comic. Or, at least that's what the product information said a couple of years ago when I ordered this. I only recently started writing reviews. I hate that it's taken me so long to write about this bit of different.
It really cannot and should not be compared to any Lovecraft-based works that came before. As it should be, since this dream-swept epic is much more cerebral than slobbering tentacle-thing or horrific observer from the fifth dimension of a reality we are not meant to know. Instead, we journey about the dreamscape with Randolph Carter, meeting strange creatures and stranger faces, and perhaps the strangest allies in this work of fantasy - cats.
The quality of this work is different. The use of the art, music, and the basis of the work are all slightly skewed. In this, I feel they have done the old man justice. He himself wished for other unique visions to use his mythos. The original Dream-Quest is almost outside his own mythos, so that in itself tells us we should expect the weird. Different. Unexpected. Skewed. Weird. This 'film' has all that in spades. On the Disc, we are given a few special features: a music-only track, a few shorts, a few slide shows and DVD ROM content. At the end of the day, any fan of the Dream-Quest should watch this.
In addition, this 'collector's pack' will include a poster and two original storyboards with everything signed by the director (including the DVD packaging). The guys at Guerrilla Productions have exceptional customer service to boot. I simply can't say enough good for them or this product.
