I would have given this a solid "5 star" review EXCEPT for the fact that I feel the seller needs to clarify the number/type of pieces that you receive a little better. I was expecting 16 little baggies with something in each one, and I only got 11. However, there were 3 shark teeth in 1 bag, and more than 1 triceratops bone chips in another, and 3 Crinoid stems in another. So overall, I actually got more than 16 pieces, but I think it should be made a little clearer that you do not get 16 DIFFERENT specimens; some are multiples of one species.

Also, be aware that for the most part these are small specimens, which I kinda expected, but the photo makes them look a bit bigger than they are.

All of that having been said, I am still very happy with this set, it is a great beginner kit for my "dino-crazy daughter", and I intend to display it at her prehistoric-themed birthday party - along with some magnifying glasses for closer viewing. The Ammonite (halved & polished) is particularly beautiful. I think kids will be pretty thrilled to hold REAL dinosaur bones & fossils in their hands :)

One last note: I got this on sale for only $14.99, which is a GREAT deal for this product, IMO! In fact, I may go ahead & order another set for my daughter's science teacher. I would NOT, however, pay $40+ for this set, which was the original price. This review IS partially based on how much I paid for it.

I ordered this as a gift for my 12 year old who wants to be a palenintologist (I know I spelled that wrong.) It is a great sets, and very interesting, but VERY fragile. Two of the pieces were broken in shipping. He broke another just looking at it (not playing around, being careful.) Basically it will get the mind going and easily spark interest in anyone that has the slightest idea of what these artifacts are, but it is incredible fragile and should probably not be handled, just looked at.

Very small fossils, not organized or displayed effectively. They are fossils, but come with no description. I bought it for a gift, but would have been embarrassed to give it.

This is a great set. It says 9 different species to a set and we got 10. All 16 pieces are great and interesting. Since these are real fossils and not replicated, they are fragile as they are old!! This isnt for a child to play with. They are for kids to learn with.
Of course my kids loved the sharks teeth best and we got 3 different species. All the fossils have their own uniqueness to them so they are all interesting. The information that comes in the kit is a great beginning to learning what everything is. This is a nice addition to science studies. This isnt something you buy for a kid, hand it over, and expect them o be enthused as if its a new toy. These fossils are learning guides. If you dont understand what your looking at the kid may get bored quick.
We bought these fossils for our science class in home school and they helped bring to reality what we can only imagine from our books.
I'm very happy to have purchased this kit for that hands on experience.
I bought mine on Amazon for reduced cost, 9.99. I wouldnt of much paid more. I think the price was a good deal.

Oh, each specimen averaged around an inch in size, to about the size of a quarter.

This is a pretty decent Fossil Starter Kit compared to others I have seen. The only complaints I have are that the dinosaur bones were small and crumbly. And three of the Sharks teeth were just partials meaning not the whole tooth was present. The ammonites were covered in dirt and had to be rinsed and brushed off. The Crow shark tooth was complete and very nice. The Brachiopods and bivalves were goood along with the fossil coral. The kit does come with some info on the fossils which had some interesting information also the dinosaur bones and the Crow shark tooth both come with a nice Cerificate of Authenticity. A pretty good collection for the beginner and there are a few nice specimens I think I'll keep for myself.

If your expecting large fossils, this kit isn't for you. However if you can appreciate these smaller specimens and the variety of what you get for the price, buy it! The kit comes with a good variety of old fossils, and information on all of them. One of the most interesting pieces would be the Triceratops bone fragments, however they are what they say they are - bone fragments, but they are still cool to think that they were part of a dinosaur. Nice little starter kit.

There's a goodly bit of uncertainty in exactly what fossils you'll have in the box (in the Gumpian "Life's a box of chocolates" sense), but what I received was a nice mixture of fossils from different eras, including some ancient shark's teeth, some trilobite-type fossils, and a couple of dinosaur bones. What I received exceeded my expectations. Recommended.
