5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Price if You Can Afford It
I'm a caregiver, and the frequent hand washing along with alcohol-based sanitizers made my skin rough and painfully cracked, sometimes until bleeding. But this cream when applied after each washing helped make my hands soft again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the hand cream I'd hoped for
This hand cream has a lovely soft scent and works in easily but really did not solve my dry hand issue. The positive effects wore off within minutes. Disappointing.

I'm a caregiver, and the frequent hand washing along with alcohol-based sanitizers made my skin rough and painfully cracked, sometimes until bleeding. But this cream when applied after each washing helped make my hands soft again.

Pros of the L'Occitane cream:
1. Moisturizes super effectively.
2. Absorbs well without lots of greasiness.
3. Fragrance is pleasant and not too strong.

Cons:
1. Price.
2. Lack of UV protection.

The only other hand cream that worked about as well for me was Ahava (also very expensive).

I've also tried Neutrogena Norwegian formula, Vaseline Intensive Care, Jergens, Curel, Lubriderm, Eucerin, Aveeno and other common brands.

If you can't get the L'Occitane, then the closest inexpensive alternatives I have found so far include:
Eucerin Calming Cream, which is very rich and non-greasy (it comes fragrance free and is in a nice, large tube), and
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula, which feels a bit greasier but is available in fragrance free version, or
Norwegian Formula FAST ABSORBING Hand Cream.

Another alternative is to get some pure shea butter or Aquaphor, smooth a bit on the spots that need special treatment (especially around the nails to prevent hangnails or on cracked knuckles) and then follow up with your current favorite moisturizer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Lotion for both guys and gals, February 8, 2008
By
Hongster (Fort Lee, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
First of all I am a guy and yes I bought this after some sampling it from one of my friends. I have very dry skin (due to weight training and having sensitive skin) and I have tried a lot of lotions to get rid of my dry skin and so far the only lotion that worked was Eucerin but that lotion was way too oily as it left my hands greasy. Now comes l'occitane which leaves my hand moisturized and no more grease after applying the lotion. It is simply one of the best lotions I have used. But, no product is perfect so here are my gripes:

1. Costly
2. I don't like the smell
3. Cap is too small

Other than that you won't find a better lotion out there that not only heals very dry skin and being grease free. Recommended for all skin types for your hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny, July 4, 2007
This is the best hand cream I have found. Thick and rich, and not greasy. Absorbs easily. It is the only thing I have found that keeps my hands from cracking in the winter. Never want to be without it.

4.0 out of 5 stars product review, July 29, 2008

The hand cream absorbs easily and has a pleasant smell. I guess you probably need to keep applying it throughout the day if you want to see dramatic changes. I do not see any major difference in my hands after I started applying the product. It may be I do not reapply after washing my hands during the day. I did find that the Body Shop Hemp hand cream tended to remain even after hand washing - the shea butter hand cream does not remain in this way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, June 1, 2009
I love the smell and the fact that it moisturizes skin without greasy feeling. A little goes long way and I have my tube for months. Sometimes I use it for a super dry skin under my knees and it does wonders. Simply the best hand cream I've used.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best hand cream you can buy - absolutely, April 25, 2007
I use this in the evening on my hands and nails just before bed. When I travel to Southern California I make sure to put a travel size in my one quart zip top bag or, if its a long enough trip that I'll be checking luggage, a full size tube in the checked suitcase. When I'm in Southern CA I find that I need to use it several times a day as the air is very dry there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cream works great on gardener's hands, but smell is a bit commercial for me, January 21, 2011
This is one of the most effective hand creams I have found. I'm a professional landscaper, and my hands get thrashed. But nobody knows that, because each night I exfoliate and moisturize heavily so that I can still have nice hands.

This is a wonderful cream because it sinks in, doesn't sting cracked skin, and really provides long-lasting protection and healing. One tube lasts forever, in fact I usually get the gift set of small tubes of L'Occitane hand creams just for some variety, and I find that the three small tubes easily last me the year.

The two things I dislike are the scent, which smells a bit like old-lady cold cream - not unpleasant, but a bit more perfumey than I like, and the cap, which is fiddly and hard to get back on once you've moisturized your hands.

Other than that, this is a highly effective cream that works great for healing hands that have been in the dirt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great on the body too, April 15, 2010

This review is from: LOccitane Shea Butter Hand Cream (Misc.)
I've been using this stuff as a moisturizer for the dry and irritated skin on my arms, neck, and back for awhile now, after Aquaphor stopped working very effectively for me, and it's been very good. Since this is marketed as a hand cream, though, and I'm using it on a surface area about a hundred times greater than the hands, I do tend to use it up quickly, and this isn't exactly the cheapest cream to keep buying every week or two! When your dry skin is related to a condition like eczema or seborrheic dermatitis and isn't just run of the mill dry winter skin, you really need a thick cream or butter like this, in lieu of a thinner lotion, even a lotion that's marketed for people with dry, itchy skin. It's also important to apply more than just a thin layer, and to reapply throughout the day. I began seeing and feeling results from this cream within a few days, although I'm still going to a very recommended dermatologist who specializes in eczema so I can find out what exactly has been causing my skin to be so angry in recent memory and so I don't have to rely so much on all of these thick creams and moisturizers throughout the day to feel relief. My parents also love L'Occitane products and were the ones who suggested that I investigate the various shea butters this fine company has to offer. Overall, this is a wonderfully thick and luxurious cream which beats a lot of the other dry skin moisturizers out there, in spite of the pretty hefty price. One shouldn't be too surprised to see higher prices for beauty products when they come from a higher-end company as opposed to the cheaper brand names that are available in any drug store!

5.0 out of 5 stars I will purchase this again!, March 9, 2010

I like this cream. It's non-greasy, fast absorbing and my hands improved after using this. The small size ($10) is a perfect tube to have in my purse at all times and it smells pleasant. I will definitely purchase this again.
