If your locks could use a refresh, the proper care goes beyond gray coverage to formulas that actually improve the condition of your hair. Learn how Excellence Creme can restore the vital health, strength and color of youthful hair.

*Compared to each leading competitor's top selling brand.

Remember these expert tips from L'Oreal colorists when applying Excellence at home.

  • Always do an allergy test 48 hours prior to coloring to ensure a reaction does not occur.
  • Do a strand test on a small portion of hair prior to coloring entire head to test results.
  • Never leave the tip of the developer bottle unopened after mixing – the container may burst. Use immediately and do not save any unused mixture.
  • Rinse your hair in cold water after coloring to keep color from running.
  • Do not shampoo your hair until 24 hours after coloring to maintain color vibrancy.
  • After coloring, skip clarifying shampoos and hot oil treatments. These products can strip or fade hair color.

Rich, Radiant, Younger-Looking Hair

Over the years, hair can become damaged from daily wear and tear. Brushing, washing, even vigorous towel-drying can ruffle the cuticle and leave the hair shaft vulnerable. Moisture and melanin depletion are also the natural results of aging. The key is to treat hair differently as we age, and give it what it needs: protection before, during and after you color.

Not only does hair color give you a new look, it can leave your hair in better condition than it was before the treatment. Whether it’s going darker, lighter or enhancing your natural color, Excellence Creme has the power to brighten your complexion, instill confidence and give you an age-reversing boost.

Your Guide to Hiding the Many Shades of Gray

Gray hair is beautiful. It’s a sweet reminder of a life well-lived. A sign of your experience and wisdom. It can even be super stylish—whether you’ve got a striking gray streak against dark hair, a perfect salt and pepper blend, or a just a shimmering, solid silver look.

But for those of us who’d like to keep grays at bay, the task can be a challenging one, since gray hair is very resistant to taking color. The good news is, it can be done. Excellence Creme with Pro-Keratine Complex hair color is the ideal choice for aging hair because it offers amazing gray coverage, while deeply conditioning. A must for hair that’s over 50% gray. It has the power to transform dull, dry and coarse strands into a silky, shiny mane—all in mere minutes.

Since gray hairs often grow in with a coarser, drier texture than the rest of your hair, they can be super-resistant to coloring. Excellence Creme has been developed specifically to address this challenge. It protects your hair before, during and after the process. First, a pre-color serum softens hair, seals fragile ends and prepares it to better accept color. Next, the color application keeps hair nourished with the active ingredient, Pro-Keratine. Finally, an après-coloring deep conditioner safeguards the rich radiance. Make sure you leave color on hair for the full recommended time and keep in mind that stubborn grays may need an extra 10 minutes to fully absorb the formula.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Excellence Crème

Before coloring, apply the Pre-Color Protective Treatment to protect fragile ends and help prepare hair to accept color evenly. To open tube, twist round tip so that it breaks off. Massage product into dry ends before coloring, avoiding the root area. Wait for 2 minutes, do not rinse and cotinue with mixing color.

Part 1: Mix

Step 1. Put on colorist gloves and twist off the tip of the Developer (1) bottle cap before beginning. Remove cap from bottle.

Step 2. Pierce the opening of the Color Creme (2) tube completely with the point provided in the top of the cap. Do not point either end of the tube toward the face while opening or using. Squeeze entire contents of Color Creme (2) into the Developer (1) bottle and recap the bottle.

Step 3. Place your finger over open tip, point away from your face and shake thoroughly until mixture is totally blended. Developer bottle is now your haircolor applicator bottle. (Never leave the tip of the developer bottle unopened after mixing – the container may burst. Use immediately and do not save any unused mixture.)

Part 2: Apply to Roots

Step 1. Make 1/4-inch partings throughout your dry, unwashed hair with regular applicator tip. Apply color onto new growth root area until completely saturated.

Step 2. Leave color on new growth root area for 20 minutes. For resistant grays, leave mixture on hair an additional 10 minutes.

Part 2: Apply to Rest of the Hair

Step 1. Apply remaining product to the rest of the hair. Make sure all the hair is completely saturated. Optional: If you choose to use full coverage comb for easier application, remove applicator tip and attach comb on protective creme developer (1) bottle.

Step 2. Pile hair loosely on top of your head and let develop for an additional 10 minutes.

Part 3: Rinse Out

When time is up, add a small amount of warm water to the hair and lather color mixture through the hair. Rinse until water runs clear.

Part 4: Condition & Recondition

Apply half the tube of Conditioner (3) through hair. Leave on for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Style as usual. Use the other half of the Conditioner (3) two weeks after you color.

Covers the gray well.
I've used a number of different hair color products through the years and it is my humble opinion that L'Oreal is simply the best hair color I've ever used.

I do have a lot of reddish undertone to my hair, and this color looks very much like my natural color which I always consider reddish brown.

Color Name: 6BB Light Beige Brown Verified Purchase
Best box hair dye yet! I previously had bleach blonde hair (my hair is naturally medium brown). As you can probably guess my hair was in the worst possible shape after bleaching it for 2 years straight. It became very dry & I had to keep cutting it shorter & shorter since it just broke off all over. (I don't recommend ever bleaching your hair ever if you want to keep your long hair long or keep a specific hair style - the bleach won't allow you to keep a specific hair cut - I promise that). I began to use the at home Loreal Excellence hair dye & slowly after not flat ironing & hair drying my hair but showering at night & letting it air dry, it has grown & is much longer & getting thicker. I've tried the other Loreal Superior Preference & it dries it a little more than the Excellence. I like the Pre-cream that you apply to your hair prior to hair dying. As for the color I'm a medium brown (more on the dark side than the light side). I used the color Light Beige Brown 6BB & it comes out very nice. I have a lot of red undertones & this is the perfect color for me to get rid of the red/brassiness. I highly recommend the Excellence Loreal brand to those that want to keep their hair in healthy condition & not have damage to their ends.

Color Name: 5AB Mocha Ash Brown Verified Purchase
All boxed color comes with 20 volume developer (i.e., peroxide). The amount of peroxide in it will continue to lighten your hair each time you color, but you won't see the bleached-orange-brassy color your hair has turned until the colored dye wears off (usually 2 months after you use a boxed dye kit). I have medium ash brown hair, naturally, but every ash brown boxed dye kit I try would make my hair RED (and make me terribly mad). Ask anyone who is trying to achieve an ASH color...they DO NOT want to end up with RED hair!!! Yet, that's what many women get, time after time with boxed color kits. After a lot of Googling over the past few days I found out that the strong developer that comes in boxed kits is to blame (not the color itself).

So, I ordered two boxes of the 5AB (a=ash, b=blonde?) ash mocha brown from Amazon--I have a lot of hair (past my shoulders). Then I went to Sally's and bought a bottle of 10 volume developer and threw away the boxed kit's 20 volume developer! That's right ladies...throw that crap away.

Using a lower volume of peroxide (i.e. 10, or even 5) *should* stop your hair from continuing to get bleached (and turn orange underneath the fresh color you're just putting on). The 10 volume developer will open up the hair cuticle just enough to let the color in (and keep it in for a few months) without continuing to lighten/bleach your new growth or your already-bleached orange/brassy old-growth hair. Combining the color dye with a 10 volume developer is being called demi-permanent these days, and it is supposed to be a deposit-only coloring option (as opposed to stronger developers which simultaneously bleach/lighten your hair AND deposit color).

Color Name: 8BB Medium Beige Blonde
This is simply the BEST blonde haircolor for removing red tones and brassiness. The color looks a bit purple/pinkish when it's on your head, but that's not the result you get at all. The beautiful beige is 100% brass free... it's like a champagne blonde, but deeper and richer. It's a great summer color. Unfortunately it is getting difficult to find in stores, so I buy online. Recommended.

Color Name: 7R Red Penny
I've used this shade off and on for years. Go to a professional for blonde and highlights, but if you want red, go to this. The Red Penny shade is so beautiful when it's applied to a medium/dark blonde base. Years ago I used it over brown and the auburn it created was nice, but faded quickly. Use it on blonde and you'll be happy for weeks. I get more compliments with this color than anything else by a mile.

The most recent Excellence formula gives you a serum to apply to dry ends before coloring. It's wonderful. Usually I get a dry, almost crispy feel to my hair the first few days to a week after a home dye, but I did not experience it with this, surely because of the serum.

I should mention that this dye can turn an odd, almost frightening red early on in the processing and it might scare you into rinsing it out too soon. Let it go and step away from the mirror. This red turns to an orange and then to a dark purple, and after 30 minutes the end result will be perfect. It all rinses cleanly in warm water and feels soft afterwards.

EDIT: Colored my hair again with the Excellence product, but this time I went with Light Auburn because Red Penny was sold out when I went to buy it. Another winner. I'm really blown away by how nice these dyes are making my hair feel, I'm sure because of the pre-treatment you apply to the roots beforehand. My hair is a beautiful shade of auburn and very soft. Also, another thing to try if you have dry ends after coloring, apply a very tiny amount of olive oil to the ends and go as long as you can without washing. A very scant amount goes a long way---apply too much and you'll look like a greasy rat.
