CAEDMON Records was founded in 1952 by two women. The very first offering from what would become the most prestigious of record labels, was Dylan Thomas reading his own poetry.

Over the years, dozens of authors, poets and actors were recorded by CAEDMON, all the top names in their fields. Album sides often run a full half-hour. The CAEDMON catalog includes complete stage productions, from Greek tragedies to Shakespeare to modern works.

The CAEDMON LP of DICKENS A CHRISTMAS CAROL (TC 1135S) has a cast of thirteen and runs nearly an hour. Surely it's the longest and most complete such offering on a single disc.

Sir Ralph Richardson, as Ebenezer Scrooge, isn't too convincing with his first "Bah, humbug!" yet he ultimately does well as the misanthropic miser who's changed for the better by the overnight visits of three spectres. (Technical note: some of the things Scrooge witnesses on his sojourn to enlightenment are cloaked in simulated echo.)

Although Richardson gets to chew lots of imaginary scenery in this adaptation of the beloved Dickens novella, the production's real star is Paul Scofield as the author/narrator. His lowkey comments hold things together nicely as they move the story along.

Full advantage is taken of the stereo soundstage, with voices often emanating from channel extremes. Occasional sound effects nicely enhance a "theater of the mind" show that's one of the finest ever committed to vinyl.

I cannot lavish enough praise on this rendition of this most essential Christmas story. All other versions, dramatizations, renderings pale in comparison.

When I read the original, I hear these voices. It's like when Rachmaninoff supposedly told Horowitz that Horowitz played his work better than he did. Surely, Dickens would have been more than pleased. I've been waiting for the CD to be mastered but it has been a long wait and still nothing. Covet this and nothing else and you shall be glad you did. Why are the best things always the hardest to find?
