Earlier book not the same,

I find the reports from the earlier posters to be based on the test that existed before April 1, 2009. The current version of this book is said to be based on this newer test.
I found the book to be severely substandard in preparing for this new test. As the previous poster said, the sample questions are not even in the same league with the questions on the test. I rate this book as a complete waste of money if you are planning on taking the LPIC-1 tests.

This is a fantastic book to prepare before taking LPIC-1. Clear, consistent language with good examples covers all objectives. Really fast and good reference to the subject. I honestly can recommend this book to everybody who thinks about taking LPIC-1.
Good job Mr. Roderick W. Smith ;) Thank you.

I thought this book would be a quick read, LOL my mistake! I'm happy about it though, it covers TONS of stuff. I've only been using a Linux OS for a few months, my primary use is on web servers (SSH). So I figured I better start getting smart and study this over the course of a year, possibly a bit more, and perhaps I'll be able to pass an exam eventually :P Lot of stuff, Lot of stuff, good purchase.
My only complaint is that the page paper pages feel cheap, kind of absorable and easy to tear, almost newspaper-ish, and a dull grayish color. So highlighting things will be scary, it might go through a few pages, I hope not!

Very good book for helping with the exam and learning Linux. The only complaint I have is minor in that the practice exams (both end of chapter and on the accompanying CD) are all multiple choice. The actual exams are peppered with questions which you WILL need to know the command, the command's structure, and necessary arguments to answer the question and ultimately type in the full command! The book does indeed go over the important arguments, but if you are actually going to be using Linux professionally AND pass the exam, it helps to have them memorized.

While this book is very thorough, it is no replacement for experience. The LPI exams are not something you can study for for a week and expect to pass. This book gives you the skeleton, but if you haven't used the commands mentioned in it a lot and don't have a good understanding of Linux in the first place, then this book will be of marginal use. If you have some experience under your belt and need a refresher or to fill in a few gaps, this book is excellent. It covers everything from the exams. The sample exams also made me aware of a few gaps I was unaware of, which allowed me to fix them. The difficulty of the actual exams was still much higher than the practice exams, so don't get complacent if you do well on the samples.
Due to the quality of this book, I will be purchasing their LPIC-2 book.

Excellent Study Guide,
This review is from: LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide: (Exams 101 and 102) (Paperback)
Mr Roderick W. Smith, my deepest respect to you. I have studied for the 2 exams virtually using this study guide alone, and I am Linux + and LPIC-1 certified. The book covers 95% of the study material that is evaluated on the exams, some topics have to be researched to complement material (swapon, umask and a few others) but the way this book is put together makes you feel you are in a classroom with your own private Penguin Teacher :) Only a true Master can dominate all the topics of this exam, plus explain himself in almost perfect clarity with real- world tips and scenarios. The practice exams at the end of every chapter were excellent to test oneself's knowledge, and the the bonus exams were definetely a must for passing the real exams. From my perspective, If the candidates want to pass the 2 exams, the primary ingredient is to work hard with the concepts and commands following this book as their primary source for preparation. Congratulations to you and God bless you! I will be looking for your LPIC-2 study guide next year.

A good starting step to know linux for newcomers because it not only allows to practice on this OS, but also because it allows to take an LPI examination in short time.

Comprehensive,

One word: comprehensive. The book covers the exam objectives in-depth and organized in a fashion that feels natural. The questions at the end of each chapter are difficult enough to prepare you for the real thing. If you can read and understand each chapter and get the review/assessment questions right then you WILL pass the exam. It's obvious that the author put more time into the book than Jang did into his "LPIC-1 in-depth" book. This is the one to get! Passed the first exam with ease and I sit the second exam this week and am confident thanks to this book. Too bad he hasn't written one for LPIC-2.

Although this book provide good material, it just isn't completely relevant to LPIC-1 objectives. After taking the test and failing it I would not recommend this book. The other downside to this is that I can not recommend other books, because all of them are more outdated than this book. I would like for writers to write more on examples on how to use commands in different ways and stop pawning off man pages to me; you never really going get tested on using commands the basic way. The LPIC test is a very straight forward test compare to Linux +. I just wish I had better material to study for this test.

The April 1st 2009 Exams?,

I found the book to adhere to the new objectives as stated by LPI. For example it includes the SQL module.
Also, LPI states in its website that this 2nd edition is a recommended book for the new exams. It might be a good idea to wait and see Mike Jang's new book,LPIC-1 In Depth to be published on May 19th. |
