5.0 out of 5 stars Correction to the CD-ROM
This only affects the Linux version of the exam simulation software.

Someone forgot to tell the developer that versioning would be applied to the filename after it was submitted, so the executable binary that installs the ExamSim for Linux is looking for itself, by the wrong name.

IT'S SIMPLE TO FIX! Just copy the file "examsim-linux-1.0-setup"...

I've been administering linux for years, and decided it's time to get certified. Figured I'd pick up this book to see what's going to be on the exam, to fill in the holes in my knowledge. The book is easy to read, and get through, but the inaccuracies are astounding. Here's a few examples from the first four chapters (as far as I've gotten so far):

5.0 out of 5 stars Correction to the CD-ROM, October 9, 2004

This only affects the Linux version of the exam simulation software.

Someone forgot to tell the developer that versioning would be applied to the filename after it was submitted, so the executable binary that installs the ExamSim for Linux is looking for itself, by the wrong name.

IT'S SIMPLE TO FIX! Just copy the file "examsim-linux-1.0-setup" from the "ExamSim" folder on the CD-ROM to a hard disk and rename it "examsim.setup". Re-execute it and the exam simulation will be installed properly.

We'll be getting this fixed so it won't be happening for the next printing/edition, apologies to those who tried to install the Linux version and then had to *gulp* use the Windows Version.

* in Chapter 4, it says that ethernet devices are known as /dev/eth0. Ethernet devices are *never* created in /dev, there is no file system representation of most network devices.
* in the tests for Chapter 3, it says that vi +/"string" file won't work, because of the quotes, but this works fine on every system I've tested it on.
* Chapter 3: It says that c$ goes to the end of the line, but not across line-wrapping, but c$ *does* go across line wrapping.

Those are just a few of the mistakes I've found in the first four chapters. I still expect the book to be a good review for me, and a good index of the topics covered on the exams, but I'm certainly going to be double-checking anything I'm unfamiliar with, and I'd suggest you do the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars LPIC test passing essential, August 23, 2005
This review is from: LPIC I Exam Cram 2: Linux Professional Institute Certification Exams 101 and 102 (Paperback)
I just passed the LPI 101 exam thanks in part to the excellent book by Ross Brunson. The material is conveyed with the enthusiasm and technical clarity of a top notch university professor. The exam simulation software, special exam 'Alert' tips, and depth of subject material were all key points that helped me pass the test. There is even a cool tear out "Cram Sheet" that is crammed (no pun intended) with helpful tips.

I did have some problems running the Exam Simulation software on my SUSE Professional distro. I e-mail Mr. Brunson who promptly pointed out a link on the [...] website to fix the errors - [...]

I have a Masters in Information Systems so I have taken many technical courses. None of the books have come close to the LPIC 1 book that Ross Brunson has written. It will long be a gem in my bookshelf of reference material...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the book you need for the LPI 101/102 exam, October 31, 2004
This review is from: LPIC I Exam Cram 2: Linux Professional Institute Certification Exams 101 and 102 (Paperback)
Having spent a good deal of time looking for the book that would help me pass the exam, I think I just found it! I have purchased many books on the subject of Linux, but none that really fits the bill with regard to taking the exam. I am a Novell CNI who is really going to have get to grips with Linux now that Novell has SuSE in its portfolio. This book isn't just for exam takers, its great to get to know linux for the novice. Plenty of good real world tips, exam questions, and an exam simulator. Many technical books are just right to put you to sleep of an evening, I found it very readable, well structured, without having to religously follow the chapter sequence. My advice is to buy it if you are serious about the LPI qualification!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad testing software, December 17, 2004
This review is from: LPIC I Exam Cram 2: Linux Professional Institute Certification Exams 101 and 102 (Paperback)
Just passed LPI 101 today with many thanks to Mr. Brunson's book. I have been studying a couple hours each day for about 3 weeks, I have to say that this book was a great help to passing the test. However.... yes i "rtfm" about installing the included test software on linux, I also downloaded the newer version from the exam cram site. The application starts but it cannot load any of the tests. I had to break down and use the windoze version, and even that version would only ask me the same 30 questions, it would not change the test questions.
Even though I think this is a very good book for studying for the LPI exam I would also recommend 2 other books that I used along with this one to be ready for any thing on the 101 test: Linux: System Administration from sybex and Linux in a nutshell from O'Reilly.

For the CD issue, as Brunson says:
"..copy the file "examsim-linux-1.0-setup" from the "ExamSim" folder on the CD-ROM to a hard disk and rename it 'examsim.setup'" and then run it.

After doing this, I got the following error:
[root@rowan rowan]# examsim
examsim: error while loading shared libraries: libbz2.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Fix by finding and linking your version of libbz2 to libbz2.so.1.0:
[root@rowan rowan]# find /usr/lib -name libbz2*
/usr/lib/libbz2.so.1.0.2
/usr/lib/libbz2.a
/usr/lib/libbz2.so
/usr/lib/libbz2.so.1

[root@rowan rowan]# ln -s /usr/lib/libbz2.so.1.0.2 /usr/lib/libbz2.so.1.0

3.0 out of 5 stars LPIC Certification, June 7, 2007

The book focuses on Red Hat, RPM, VI, and the command line to the exclusion of the more recent utilities, changes, and tools (such as DHCP) which are now the mainstay of the Linux Administrator. If it helps cram for the LPIC I wouldn't take it -- not only because it would be unnecessarily difficult, but also because it is useless. It would be like taking a trivia test for Linux instead of learning how to become a competent administrator.

The book is great, but the CD is missing the file examsim.setup
without this very important file the installation just doesn't work :-( . I haven't tried the cd with Windows because I don't use Windows, but the book is really great even if you can't use the cd. Hopefully by the time I finish studying the book the missing file might be available for download somewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!, August 22, 2007
This review is from: LPIC I Exam Cram 2: Linux Professional Institute Certification Exams 101 and 102 (Paperback)
I am an Oracle Database Administrator but my knowledge of Linux was very weak. I wanted to get the LPIC certification so that I could expand my knowledge and be able to better communicate with our System Administrators and Network Administrators.

This book covered topics in a way that a person with no experience with Linux could understand (you may need some computer background). The software included was a bonus for me. The book also include a pull out summary sheet of the topics and commands learned (great for studying).

In addition to this book, I do recommend that you set up a computer where you can install and practice what you learn. I also recommend that you but additional self testing software. The combination of the three should guarantee that you pass the LPIC exam and have an honest understanding of what you have learned.

This book was quite thorough in its coverage of the material, and the practice questions were superb (although it would have been nice if there were more of them on the CD). I had no trouble setting up the examsim software on my Linux box, so they must have fixed that problem.

The only thing I would complain about is that parts of the chapter on networking were a tad difficult to understand, and I had to find supplemental online resources.
