I thought the lay out of this book and its' pamphlet and cdrom, show some care and was well thought out (at least on paper). However, there are so many errors in this release. More than any other technical book or reference that I have ever seen (and my personal library is extensive). The cdrom tests are particularly riddle with errors. The author of this book needs to consider a new editor and/or proofreader. This should never have made it to press. So as to not be totally negative, most errors are blatant enough to catch and they do force you to look up the truth in some other reference.. I certainly would not use this as your only study source. But I do believe it would be helpful as tertiary study guide. (Use it to catch the errors)

Covers only the first part of the exam. My question would be, what happens next?

If you really want my answer, here is it. Save your money and get either O'Reilly & Associates "LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell" by Jeffrey Dean or Hungry Minds, Inc's "LPIC 1 Certification Bible" by Jason Nash and Angie Nash.

Both offer Part I and Part II exams, and what's more, the former is less than the Prep Kit--two for the price of one! [The] LPIC Bible [might cost a little] more, but if you consider that the material is superior and it includes the second exam, it is still much cheaper.

I just took the exam and I think that this book prepared me the most. Don't expect to memorize everything and pass. You can't underestimate hands on, but this book will tell you what you need. I had some problems with the practice Exam on the cd repeating the questions over and over but besides that the book really helped. The pull out cheat sheet was very helpful. This was the second of 2 books that I bought to prepare for the Exam, but if I bought this first I wouldn't have needed 2. Don't be fooled by the high reviews on the on the other book this is the one that will help the most with what to know for the exam.

This book is well written and well organized. As I already have much of the knowledge, this book filled in the rest in a clear and concise way. I was just looking for a test prep, but I find myself using pieces of this book as examples when talking to others as the text is so clear. I rate this a definite keeper for anyone who often has to answer other peoples questions and make them understand. It is not, and does not pretend to be, a complete reference. It is a quick and concise read to fill in gaps and clarify the known, so it assumes a bit of knowledge to build from. Combine with one of the 1000+ page manuals and you will have the big book for the odd stuff and this one to clarify and concentrate on the usefull.

I used this book to prepare for the exam and although it does have some minor errors these are not too serious as it covers the main essentials of the exam. If you are still new to the Linux OS this book will assist in filling in the gaps and provides a good foundation. It is simply put, well structured and easy to follow and if there are any doubts about any of the sections then these are followed up with the questions at the end of each chapter, lab exercises and an OK self test software. Overall I would say that it is good resource to have.

Even with the poor editing and proofreading, I benefitted from it as another source of test information.

This is a good book for beginners. It is a nice book but way to basic if you already have experience. For the exam I think they should go into more detail than just the topics. I do like the study guide that comes with it.

Seems like the publishers were only interested in reviewing grammar and spelling and not ensuring the technical content was accurate. The book touts that fact that Ms. Martinez "teaches" Linux, but she obviously doesn't *use* it. The book is full of technical misconceptions (no, Linux does not work just like DOS) and inaccuracies (how about running a command to see how it works?). The book comes has a CD with an electronic test, but that has just as many mistakes as the book. It is easy to understand the material, but if you are not proficient in Linux, you should **always** test it to make sure it's correct. (Which it isn't quite often). Considering how many Linux certification books are out there, your money is best spent somewhere else.

I tried to use this book but lost confidence after finding a large number of errors. The practice questions used options that were never covered in the text and some of them use options that don't even exist for the specific commands. Along with this I found a large number of incorrect filename and syntax errors. It was as if the commands were never tried and the author had no experience with them. I found error after error when attempting to use the commands and information presented in this book. I would pass on this book and try a general linux book instead...

This book was a great help to me in preparing for the test. It comes with a flash note pullout which I used just before I walked in to the test. It helped to get my confidence up. If you are a beginner you can use the labs in the appendix to great effect. The self-test program that comes with is ok and need work. If you are used to Transenders or the Big Red Tests you will be disappointed. I did find several typos in the book and the self-test. This was confusing until I tested the commands out on my Linux box.
