At small town on the Outer Banks, a loving groom fails to show up on his wedding day. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Haunting Story April 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In The Very Old Man, Jenny Milchman brings a new twist to the suspense/horror genre, showing us that what hides within can be more terrifying than any external threat. The story exudes a sense of menace, yet that menace doesn't come solely--or even primarily--from the titular character. It comes from the psyche of the female protagonist.

A routine day of shopping becomes anything but routine when a creepy old man gives a quarter to Bethany, the nine-year-old daughter of new mother, Denise. From that moment on things start to go awry. Bethany falls down a flight of stairs. The nursery mysteriously floods with water. Coincidence, or mishaps somehow linked to the enigmatic Old Man--who suddenly seems to look younger...?

The Very Old Man is a deceptively simple tale with surprising depth of character and theme. Ms Milchman brings a fresh intelligence and original voice to the genre of suspense/horror. Mere horror makes you fear; but long after you finish reading this story, you will still be thinking about it. This is a story you can read again and again (as I did) and find something new to appreciate each time. The Very Old Man is not just well-crafted storytelling, but writing at its best.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Very Old Man April 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Jenny Milchman made me care about these characters and fear for them as well. I felt a real sense of danger when reading the story wondering what next would befoul this young family. Like Hitchcock, the threat of danger in The Very Old Man is worse than the actual danger. This is a well-crafted story worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle, yet Spooky Story May 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
REVIEW BY GERALDINE EVANS

THE VERY OLD MAN SHORT STORY BY JENNY MILCHMAN

The story starts in a grocery store when the old man of the title manages to scare a young mother when he gives her baby daughter the gift of a small coin. The events that follow have her convinced that the old man has some evil power over her child's life. But it this power real or all in her mind?

A well-written tale which had me believing in the old man's evil. Jenny Milchman definitely has a future in this genre. She conjured up believable events that were not far-fetched in any way. Young mothers are often easily spooked and fearful when it comes to their babies and it is this vulnerability which is so successfully evoked. Thoroughly recommended.

The Very Old Man by Jenny Milchman
WOW! I want more! I want more! I want more! This story will have every mother on the edge of her seat and giving her husband a sideways look. This is the first short story I have read in years and I enjoyed it tremendously. I am so intrigued. I'm not sure if what Denise was feeling was real or not. I want to know more about her marriage. Please, please think about making this into a novel. I would read it in a heartbeat.

Escape From Southern Point by Libby Sternberg
I'm so angry at the groom I could spit. I loved this short story. It's so true about wanting to get away from the small town you grew up in. The interaction between the characters was wonderful. My heart bled for that poor bride and I stood up and cheered when she gave the groom what he deserved. You go girl!

5.0 out of 5 stars A clever, gripping story, sure to unnerve you.. May 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Jenny Milchman's "A Very Old Man" is an unsettling ride through a young mother's uneasy dealings with a mysterious and creepy old man. Has he come to curse her or is he just an unwitting victim of her own deep rooted superstitious fears?

The taut pacing and vivid character depiction will have you wondering the entire trip and leave you with more than a few mysteries to ponder when the last page is turned.

Make sure you get this fantastic find, one written in a style reminiscent of Stephen King's short treasures.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Very Old Man is a spooky bedtime story! July 12, 2011
By Darlene
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book, "The Very Old Man", is sold in Kindle format together with another short story which I did not review.

This is a very spooky bedtime story!

Denise, the protagonist, is the mother of a nine-month old girl named Bethany. She is a little over-protective of her daughter and, in this case, she might have good reason!

Strange things begin to happen following the encounter with the old man: The baby has a few accidents and unexplained things occur in Bethany's nursery. Do these strange occurrences have anything to do with the coin the old man gave to Bethany? Is it cursed? Or is it Denise's own paranoia?

Milchman is an engaging storyteller! She did not tie everything up into a neat little package for the reader. Rather, she leaves the reader to ponder over the story to try to figure it out!

There is no gore or anything of that nature, so it does not quite fit the horror genre - yet it is more than a mystery. The book is more subtle than horror, reminiscent of a good ghost story.

With it being a short story, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it as much as I did! I did not expect to be drawn in so much and so fast in such a short time. My only complaint was that it wasn't longer! I think Milchman could weave a fabulous full-length tale! I would love to read more from her!

Be warned: Any mom who reads this book will shudder a little!

MY RATING: 4.5 stars!
