Book Description

Two mysterious stories that take readers on a journey to the border of fantasy at the junction of imagination and dreams!

In this fourth volume of the Istoria Books LUNCH READS series, readers will encounter a girl frightened by strange events and stranger parents and a Jewish widower grappling with sorrow and longing.

LOOKING GLASS LILLY by E.B. Loan: As birds fall from the sky and fish die in rivers, Lilly’s parents begin to believe the end is near. But whose end? From the first words of this haunting story, E.B. Loan pulls the reader into young Lilly’s fears as she struggles to understand what’s happening.

A POT OF GOLD by Ted William Gross: Moishe, the tailor of Lomza, still grieves for his wife years after her passing. His sorrow blinds him to the needs of his family until his daughter Rachel tells him she would like to marry. Prompted by a dream of riches, he sets off on a journey to Warsaw to find the gold for her dowry, encountering instead an adventure where disaster confronts him.

E.B. LOAN’s first two suspense novels, KILLER ON THE KEY and OPALS AND RUBIES, are published by Wings Press. Her third novel, CONFESSIONS OF A PTA MAFIA MOM, is published by Dare Empire Media under the pen name Elsie Love. E.B. is a regular editorial contributor for THE INSPIRED QUILL Publishing House. She has also been featured in the Atlanta Skirt! newsletter. Her blog post, “You Can't be Mad, I'm Already Mad,” was published in the Jacksonville Times.

TED WILLIAM GROSS was born in Manhattan and now lives in Israel. He has had two children’s books published -- THE LETTER & THE CROWN and OF RABBIT’S WOOL & CAMEL’S HAIR -- and has had articles on polemics and religion published in Midstream Magazine. Ted maintains the award-winning blog, HELP! I HAVE A FIRE IN MY KITCHEN, ( which takes a humorous look into the adventures of a single parent who learned the hard way, and with a great deal of trepidation, how to cook and feed his children, friends and the rare date with a measure of intelligence, dignity and (hopefully) good food.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got Me Thinking August 26, 2011

Every so often you read something or hear something that gives you pause. Looking Glass Lilly gave me such a moment. How far would I go for self-preservation? Lilly's strength really came across, as did her vulnerability. Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice twist August 14, 2011
By Marlana
Format:Kindle Edition
"A pot of Gold" by Ted Gross makes for a wonderful and witty quick read. The description in the story helps paint images in your head letting your mind travel thru the story as it unfolds. I most liked the contrast of emotions the story was able to combine for a short story. The added plus is the witty twist the tale takes. If you're looking for a quick story to get lost in and bring a smile to your face this is the Lunch Read I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of Special Memories July 31, 2011
By RhondaB
Format:Kindle Edition
Ted Gross's "Pot of Gold" is reminiscent of stories from my childhood, told and read to me by my grandparents at bedtime and around the dinner table. While reading it I was carried back to those days, the descriptions are so vivid. Upon reflection, those experiences held so dear but buried take on new meaning. While Pot of Gold is akin to those tales of Bashevis Singer there is a contemporary commentary lurking just below the surface. It is not a big time commitment. Treat yourself and savor those myths, legends and truths. Escape.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy scary and yet thought pprovoking... August 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If you sometimes see a news item that is just a shade on the scary side, one that leaves you wondering is this nature at work or is it time to be looking over your shoulder in the dark of night, then E.B. Loans' Looking Glass Lilly is the story for you. Loan has a way of taking an entertaining story and layering it with levels of deeper observation about life that I particularly enjoy. I don't know about the rest of you folks out there but when I read about huge numbers of birds falling dead out of the sky or giant fish kills washing ashore...I think "run away, run away" or maybe "hide, hide the end is near." But that's me..what about people in other areas? Maybe people with a different point of view? Looking Glass Lilly tells the tale of a family with one young daughter and how they handle the situation when it happens where they live. Scary stuff ? Maybe. Or it could be magic. You decide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful words August 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
"A Pot of Gold" is an extraordinary story, full of strong powerful feelings. With such brilliance, Ted Gross has managed to create an entire world with basically just one character. Every sentence is simple to read, but in the same time brings up many complicated thoughts and emotions. It might be a short story, but the words and the presence of "Reb Moishe" stayed with me for quite a while. I highly recommended the reading which leads- to an Oprah "AHAA moment".
