Review

LUXE City Guides have achieved quite a following among globe-trotting sophisticates, thanks to its' unique and informative blend of tongue in cheek but utterly up to the minute knowledge of a host of destinations. --The Independent , UK - Dec 2008

There are lots of mini guidebooks being published right now, but none as witty and packed with frank insider and witty info as these. Lightweight too. --Sunday Times - May 17, 2009

About the Author

Famous for their ultra short, sharp and snappy reviews and highly personal and selective entries - LUXE City Guides have sold well over one million copies - no padding, no maps, no daft pictures and graphics, just super-curated, highly opinionated quickfire speed reads from resident editors and contributors who REALLY know their city, so you can spend time enjoying the city not head down in a book. Packed from concertina cover to cover with snazz, snark and snap, if it's in LUXE, it's IN - enough said.

More About the Author

Nine years ago the founder of LUXE City Guides, Grant Thatcher, was at a party in Singapore. He was told that if he were ever to go to Bangkok, then he must be sure to take the several A4 pages that he was now being handed, as they contained the best insider knowledge on the city. Everybody, it seemed, loved this saucy list.

Grant looked at the list. It seemed familiar. It looked exactly like the list he had written for friends before he left Bangkok. Shut up, and get out of here! Dong! It's true. The rest, as they say, is history.

The walking tours listed showed off all the best places.

It's written in a really authoritative tone, and rightly so, because they've always just told things straight and truthfully - so you know exactly what you're getting.

It does outline the best of the best, so be prepared to spend a lot if you want to stick by the guide.

This is the most useful guide to Paris I've ever read. It's nice and small and gets straight to the point, and it's got all the goss on the best places to eat, shop, sightsee etc. (and in a city this big, it's good to have a couple of pointers...) And it makes you feel kinda cool, not having to lug around an ugly guidebook and letting everyone know you're not a local. It's written in a really authoritative tone, and rightly so, because they've always just told things straight and truthfully - so you know exactly what you're getting. I own quite a few of them now, since I try to look for one for each place I go to, and they've never failed me.

This little baby was so useful! It intelligently has the closest metro stop listed for every location. All of the restaurant recommendations were spot on. The walking tours listed showed off all the best places. We even used it beforehand to find a hotel. It might be helpful to mention that we were in Paris for a week and this book (in addition to lots of internet research beforehand) was all we needed to have an amazing time.

Love this guide. Easy to understand. Would like everything to be by area. Restaurants, bars, hotels, museums and shopping. Paris is separated by districts so that would make the book easier to use

My husband took me to Paris for our anniversary and on our way there, he gave me LUXE Paris. I booked our dinners according to the suggestions and the restaurants were fantastic, I followed the shopping itineraries step by step and found the most amazing hidden jems and, as recommended, we had a panoramic view of the Eiffel Tower from a café at night time - gorgeous! The best part was that they helped me find the perfect jewler who helped me resize and update my wedding ring. This trip would not have been the same without LUXE.

We liked this guide..well, sort of. We liked the restaurants it recommended, the stores it recommended, and the idea of the walks it could take you on. But we aren't millionaires, so many of the recommendations will be saved for that day when we win the lottery. It does outline the best of the best, so be prepared to spend a lot if you want to stick by the guide. The other issue is that there is no map, and things aren't organized by district. So you might find a great restaurant in the guide, but there is no info about how to find it (other than an address, obviously). Make sure you know the city really well, or have a really good map/smartphone.

We got these both for Amsterdam and Paris. We found all sorts of great eating spots and odd shops that we would never have seen otherwise.
