From the Author

I hope you love reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it. It's been a pleasant surprise to experience the recent upturn in the popularity of zombie fiction--a genre that somehow gets overlooked, or even denigrated, at times. In the vast overabundance of literature involving creatures of the night--vampires, I'm looking at you here--I think there's a marker to be laid down in favor of this breed of fiction.

I think the post-apocalyptic genre, and the zombie sub-genre specifically, is indicative of a secret yearning. In a society full of people and technology and reality shows and tweets and blogs and constant information overload and ever-present presence everywhere, I think there is a buried longing for silence. For peace and quiet. For some piece of loneliness that can never truly be achieved in a society now so intertwined and interconnected.

There's something important in that longing, and if you're reading this, you understand it too. Happy reading, friends.

More About the Author

Bryan lives happily with his beautiful wife, his two amazing sons, his ornery Dachshund and his go-lucky Vizsla--the latter having served as continuing inspiration for his canine character in the LZR-1143 series. He enjoys many hobbies, one of which is compulsively talking about himself in the third person. Just like this.

First I want to say that I highly recommend this book to zombie fans. It's a fast-paced, well-written page-turner. While it doesn't really break any new ground, it's a solid contribution to the genre that zed fans will appreciate. The main characters -- especially the lead -- actually have memorable personalities, and the setting at the beginning of the book is an interesting way to kick off the story. Bravo on both counts.

The concept is solid, the fight scenes are very descriptive without being overdone, and the author kept overt and gratuitous references to specific weapons noticeably absent which was appreciated by this reviewer.

The only drawback, besides a few minor grammar errors, was an ending that can only be described as cliche beyond belief. I was stunned that such an abrupt and poor excuse for a conclusion had been attached to an otherwise noteworthy novel. I didn't see it coming, but surprises like this you can keep. I don't want to put forth any spoilers, but suffice it to say the entire story gets flipped on its head on the last page or two. It was a letdown.

With that said, I still have to admit that the ride was worth it and I'm glad I read it. This is my first novel by this author, and I'm happy I found this book with the hope that others by him will be just as good... and with better endings.

**SPOILERS IN HERE**

I read a lot of zombie fiction, and there is a lot of bad stuff out there. Granted, this is far better than a lot of what I have read, but for some reason, I just couldn't connect with the main character. He seemed too unreal, with his whole movie star background. And having us constantly wait to find out what his famous line in his movie was is ridiculous. I haven't finished the book yet, have about thirty pages left, so I can't be sure the author ever does tell us what the dumb line is, but I imagine it'll be worked into the ending somehow.

All in all, I found this book to be too hard to believe. Yes, zombies are unreal in their own right, but this book just seemed to make it too easy for the main character. Stuck on a roof? Presto, helicopter will save you. Feeling bad about abandoning the ship? Don't feel bad, it ends up filled with zombies anyway so you made the right choice. Zombie plague is wiping out the country and who can save it? Our main man, who happens to have the inside scoop because of his wife, the scientist. Seriously, how many action movie heroes are married to genius scientists? It's just so far fetched. Oh, and one of your people gets bit on the arm? Let's chop it off with an ax, and less than an hour later the girl with the amputated arm is up and ready to rejoin the fight. It seems like Stumpy, I mean Sam, would be feeling too tired from all the blood loss to get up and join the team on a mile long walking expedition, but nope, she's fine.

Finally, the editing errors in this book grated on me. There weren't a lot, but the ones that were present were annoying as heck. Let me just say that I will feel no remorse as I "wave" good-bye to this book but I warn you, you might want to "waive" your right to read it.

I thought this was a fantastic book that kept me engaged and turning the page. I had a hard time putting it down because I just could not wait to find out what would happen next. It was very well written and just a great mystery/action book -- even if you aren't into zombie novels, you will like this one!

Pretty damned good first novel.

This one starts with Mike McNight.

McNight is a world famous actor who's known all over the world. He does action pics and his is a household name.

All that comes to a screeching halt when he comes home from a movie shoot.

Mikes plane ride home wasn't as comfortable as he expected. In fact he ended up drinking the whole way home in the less than the first class accomodations he's used to. Coach ain't for Mike McNight.

Mike's exhausted and drunk when he gets home. Later that night Mike is told that he killed his wife Maria with a nine iron.

McNight pled insanity because the proof was overwhelming and he's housed at Kings Park in Long Island NY. His $500,000 attorneys were damned useless. Mike decides he should have save his money.

Kings Park is an asylum for the criminally insane. Needless to say Mike's now famous for something besides being a movie star.

McNight manages to wake up one day even though he's been drugged to the gills since incarceration. So drugged he has a hard time telling whats real and what isn't.

Mike's wondering why he's able to leave his room. No ones around which is another indication that something is totally wrong. What that something is he doesn't find out until he gets to a TV.

Once he makes it to the rec room and turn on the TV he watches people attacking and eating people. He can't believe what he's seeing and he's beginning to wonder if he really is crazy.

Mike survives an attack by one of the guards. A mountain of a man who does his best to eat Mike. Mike manages to make an escape from the rec room. Mike realizes what he's seen on TV is one hundred percent real and he, Mike, isn't crazy after all.
