Book Description

Mike McKnight was an action movie star, condemned to a lifetime of incarceration in a psychiatric prison for the murder of someone he loved. He was discarded and forgotten, locked away by a society that moved on.

At least until the zombies showed up.

He emerges into a world that has crumbled and mankind is on the verge of elimination. From his cell in the asylum, he is suddenly thrust into a nightmare of unbelievable proportions when the dead rise and rapidly become a horrific plague on the world of the living. In a landscape littered with post-apocalyptic terrors, Mike and a handful of survivors battle humans and zombies alike, fleeing headlong through danger and despair.

From Long Island to the suburbs to the mountainous countryside, Mike fights to stay alive, recover his memories, and retrieve a cure to the most threatening plague the world has ever known.

The highly anticipated sequel, LZR-1143: Evolution, is now available for Kindle!

From the Author

I wrote these books to be scary and to be fun. Honestly, you will find some more humor in these novels than you will in a lot of post-apoc stuff. Not because the situations aren't serious, but because the people are real. This isn't better than the more serious stuff, nor is it worse (in my humble opinion), but it's different.

When people talk about "zombie novels," I note a perennial tendency toward a slight hiccup in the statement. A guffaw or a slanted look, as if to say "yeah, it's a book, but it's about zombies, so ... well, you know." I think folks that look at this type of literature with this bias are missing a big point. There is a lot of fun that goes into these books, and a fair amount of imagination and humor and raunchiness and gore. These things do not lend themselves to the same type of dissection as old english prose or French philosophy, no; but these stories are important for different reasons.

What is behind these types of books? In my opinion, it's an overarching theme of society emptying out. Of the earth being tipped on its proverbial end, and of humans pouring off the planet, leaving the barest shred of a fraction behind. Of a giant culling wildfire of illness or war or ... yes, zombies ... emptying out our planet. A giant refresh button on the website of humanity.

Do we read and write these books because we want such things to come to pass? God, no. Do we hope for a zombie apocalypse? I should hope not. But in a society full of people and technology and reality shows and tweets and blogs and constant information overload and ever-present presence everywhere, I think there is a buried longing for silence. For peace and quiet. For some piece of loneliness that can never truly be achieved in a society now so intertwined and interconnected. This is what I think the English majors and Literature folks (yes, with capital E's and L's) will be looking at 200 years from now. Not what we wrote and what we read, but why we wrote it and what we felt when we read it.

I do hope you enjoy this book, and anything else of mine that I am privileged enough to have you read. I hope you enjoy the humor and the action, and that I give you as much joy in reading as I had in writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good July 6, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Great book! I hate it when something is 9.99 (or more) and end up disappointed in the product. Sometimes the lesser priced ones are not long enough or just are not any good. Not the case here at all - a fair price and just as good, or much better, than the higher ticket books in this genre. It's a tight, well woven story and gets creepy immediately as it begins in a apparently deserted psych ward, with the main character waking up to....all the goodies that implies. Characters have depth but aren't over the top, with tons of combat/action sequences and post apocalyptic horrors. Love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars 5-Star Zombie Story, 1-Star Ending October 26, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First I want to say that I highly recommend this book to zombie fans. It's a fast-paced, well-written page-turner. While it doesn't really break any new ground, it's a solid contribution to the genre that zed fans will appreciate. The main characters -- especially the lead -- actually have memorable personalities, and the setting at the beginning of the book is an interesting way to kick off the story. Bravo on both counts.

The concept is solid, the fight scenes are very descriptive without being overdone, and the author kept overt and gratuitous references to specific weapons noticeably absent which was appreciated by this reviewer.

The only drawback, besides a few minor grammar errors, was an ending that can only be described as cliche beyond belief. I was stunned that such an abrupt and poor excuse for a conclusion had been attached to an otherwise noteworthy novel. I didn't see it coming, but surprises like this you can keep. I don't want to put forth any spoilers, but suffice it to say the entire story gets flipped on its head on the last page or two. It was a letdown.

With that said, I still have to admit that the ride was worth it and I'm glad I read it. This is my first novel by this author, and I'm happy I found this book with the hope that others by him will be just as good... and with better endings.

More About the Author

Zombies are fun, aren't they? Not just from the 'mindless walking death machine' angle, but from all the associated aspects that go with telling a zombie story. In point of fact, these creatures aren't terribly interesting, right? It's the action around them, supplied by the human protagonists and the backdrop of crumbling civilization that makes it a fun ride. But the creatures themselves--drooling, shambling, mindless carnivores--they're entertaining. They wander about in herds, they walk off roofs, and they shamble in front of moving vehicles. And they do it all out of an innate and primal hunger for flesh.

What is it about watching or reading about these things that captivates us? Obviously, we enjoy rooting for the good guys in their fight against something that can be loosely described as evil. We enjoy watching the automatic weapon fire play out in our mind; the thrill of bad guys disintegrating in a hail of righteous gunfire and the good guys walking away triumphant.

But it's not truly that simple, is it? Zombies aren't actually evil. How can they be? One requires sentience to formulate evil intent. After all, that's what makes something a zombie as opposed to someone a violent, cannibalistic sociopath. No, zombies aren't evil, just mindless and oblivious--bent on one thing, achieving one goal.

Like the guy who cut you off this morning on the freeway, blithely texting away on his mobile phone.

Like the lady that barely beat you to the front of the line at the grocery store, oblivious to the fact that you stood there in your pajamas, carrying two quarts of milk, while she carried several hundred pounds of items.

They're not so different, the zombies and the aforementioned normal folk. Oh sure, the guy from the freeway isn't trying to rip your throat out, but it's a matter of degree, right? To some extent, zombie stories are just that. A matter of degree. In the end, I would theorize that zombie stories are more real than we give them credit for. They're just every day life writ large and in more defined black and white.

While we may not be pursued by mindless automatons hungering for our flesh on a daily basis, neither is our reaction as extreme when we encounter mindless foes. The guy who cut you off?

The lady at the supermarket? Both totally oblivious and mindless; neither truly culpable in intent.

Which is why our reactions are equally mundane. In both circumstances, your reaction is likely to be what? Inventive curses under your breath?

At most you actually honk the horn, verbally confront the transgressor. But you don't shoot them. You don't commandeer a shotgun or a pitchfork or a cleverly configured laser saw or any of the other numerous tools that get used in a classic zombie tale. It's because they're not chasing you hungering for your flesh.

Now if we take that mindless, selfish oblivion up a few hundred notches, remove hand-eye coordination and add a very specific preference for rare meat? That's a story!

So why am I talking about this? I suppose it's mostly to give you insight into why I enjoyed writing this series. Not that I need to tell you, obviously, since you're reading this, but this is a great genre, and one that I'm not only lucky, but privileged, to be a part of. Hopefully, you're enjoying my contribution to the art. If not, I'm sure your review will flesh that out in time.

Sorry, pun intended there.
