This is worth a five because of its driven force, texture, sound and escpecially for the "filler" : "Impressioni brasiliane" because that one comes as colored as the titel look like.
... and for that STUNNING "Tarantella" piece from ballet "La boutique...".
Dutoit makes his (former?) Montreal symphony orchestra play this La boutique fantastique like Montreal Canadiens hockey team (quick "turnovers" :-) (or as their lives depends on it -make your own conclusion :-) in a NOT so ballet dance friendly way BUT it works good for me and this version wont dissapoint you -if you not are a ballet dancer...then it might be tough for us others it is very entertaining.
Sound and music is stunning.

When this recording was released it received some criticism for approaching Respighi's vibrant score in a manner that was considered too restrained. The final Galop, for instance, could be played with a little more panache and vigour. Still, while there are other, more boisterous versions of the Boutique Fantasque, Dutoit's performance is unsurpassed in terms of orchestral discipline and the quality of the sound, particularly in the winds. It should not disappoint.
Respighi's Brasilian Impressions leave very little impression and could have been omitted.

Dutoit's extraordinary account of the Respighi Roman Triptych was deservedly a bestseller so this followup was inevitable. The attraction for me was the BRAZILIAN IMPRESSIONS (I was thinking Milhaud, Villa-Lobos, etc.) and a remote kinship to the great Roman works, with splashes of orchestral color and infectious rhythms. For that, Milhaud is still the man. Respighi is not uninspired by Brazil, but neither is he much energized by it. It's pleasant enough travelogue music by a master orchestrator but hardly inspired. Dutoit does what he can with the score, assisted by the able Decca mobile team.

The BOUTIQUE--a throwaway filler for Arthur Fiedler ages ago--is superlatively entertaining, and Dutoit rises to the challenge excitedly. Who really composed this music? Is it really "Italian"? Was sly old Salieri somehow involved somewhere along the line? It's all a musical riddle wrapped in an enigma, and this performance is utterly beguiling.

Those in search of offbeat Respighi should pounce upon the late Sena Jurinac's sublime recording of his Shelley setting, IL TRAMONTO (Westminster, superbly remastered by DG).
