I go through a number of batteries, and this La Crosse Technology Portable Battery Tester was purchased here to keep in my camera bag for checking batteries when on the run. It's compact enough to do what I need: test batteries quickly so that I don't have failures in the middle of a photo shoot. Here are the simple points, followed by some details:
+ Very rugged design; battery gauge is very clear and legible
+ Tests rechargeable Ni-MH or alkaline AA, AAA, C, D and 9V cells
+ Easy to read gauge: green = good; yellow = ?; red = replace
+ Compact enough to fit in a camera bag
+ 2-year limited manufacturer's warranty
- Clamshell package unnecessary; very difficult to open
- Stiff operationally
Bought this here on Amazon to replace a locally-purchased compact battery tester that had failed within a few months, and was no longer reliable. In a short time, have found the La Crosse Technology Battery Tester to be invaluable and a comfortable enough size to go into the camera bag to test both rechargeable Ni-MH or alkaline AAA batteries quickly and efficiently.Read more ›
Seriously though, I think we've all done this - change out batteries in electronic devices if the item isn't working up to snuff, and if you find the problem isn't the battery you now have a good battery out of the package and very often find it later, not sure, can't recall if it's good. You're faced with throwing it out and possibly wasting money on a good battery, keeping it in a junk drawer or it ends up rolling around on your desk for months before you get so sick of seeing it you just toss it in the garbage can.
Because I hate wasting money I test any stray battery just in case. But testing it with the traditional battery tester can be time consuming and annoying, and for some of us it's also difficult. Most of us keep battery testers in the garage or basement, tucked away in a box of tools. And even if the tester is near by and easy to get to, traditional battery testers can be hard to use - especially if you have dexterity problems or a child in your lap. This tester allows you to slide the battery in and just squeeze to test. That's it. Very simple and easy.
My husband bought this tester for me because I fumbled around so much with his regular battery voltage tester that has wires and clips. I have dexterity problems due to arm injuries but I find this easy to use. He also had another motive - he wanted me to stay out of his tool box, wanted me to have a tester of my own.
Like the other reviewers, I took away one star because the indicator was a bit hard to read.Read more ›
I also have others, by the way. Ones with hinge contacts or holder-less sliders are not as easy to use and polarity gets mixed up. You can see a proof of this polarity problem by looking at ads of other battery testers and they show the battery placed backwards!
