Customer Reviews

It was a big mistake.

You've got to turn both on (which in the case of the receiving unit means to re-install the battery), within about a minute of each other.
Stoney
Both temp sensors accurate within 1 deg.

After having an excellent experience with another La Crosse Technologies product (bought 6 years ago) I made it a point to seek them out when looking for a new indoor/outdoor thermometer. What a mistake that was! The problem seems to be in the sensor design. It has to be mounted so that it receives enough light to charge the batteries yet sheltered enough so that it isn't exposed to moisture because the plastic sensor case has holes and if water gets in the solar charger is toast. The directions suggest mounting it under an eve or deck rail, which I did, but of course, sometimes rain doesn't fall straight down. Water still managed to enter the sensor through the holes in the case and the outdoor temperature stopped reading inside the house. Since the solar cell was wet and no longer working, I tried to replace the solar batteries in the sensor with standard AAA batteries, only to find out later from their Tech Support that the sensor is not made to be opened and I voided the warranty. They suggested that I go to their "outlet website" and buy a new sensor. Guess what--this type sensor isn't offered on their website. So I sent another email to tech support advising them of this and asking if a different sensor in the same frequency range would work--preferably a closed one that wouldn't allow moisture to enter. They didn't bother to even respond to the second email. So they get one star for selling junk, and the same one star for poor customer service. This was a real disappointment since the one I bought 6 years ago (with a sealed sensor) is still chugging along.

BOTTOM LINE
I would NOT buy this Station again based on my experience with it. I would look for a Station which can operate on regular batteries and/or an AC adapter; with a more visible display; and with a better selection of methods for installing the sending unit.
However, once setup, the Station works adequately for me. Setup was a hassle, mostly because I didn't read the instructions first.

SETUP: Important
It is important to do things in the correct order. While you are unpacking, reading the manual etc. set both the sending and receiving unit in bright light to top-off the rechargeable batteries. Then:
1) Set the sending (small) unit and the receiving (large) unit side by side at least several feet away from a computer or TV. Get the "poker" (from the package with the screws) out, and set it beside the sending unit.
2) Take a battery out of the receiving (display) unit (you don't need to take both out), set the switch to "solar" if it isn't already.
3) Turn on the sending unit, by poking a switch through a hole with the "poker"---you may need to wait a few seconds or press more than once till you get a ledgeable reading of the current temp/humidity
4) Re-install the battery in the receiving (display) unit. The two units will sync within a minute. Then you can install the sending unit outside.

Note that if you are too slow in performing the steps, the units will not sycn. You've got to turn both on (which in the case of the receiving unit means to re-install the battery), within about a minute of each other. And again, the order is important---the (small) sending unit must be turned on first.

OPERATION: adequate
At first, it is a bit disconcerting when the receiving (display) unit goes blank in low light.

I gave this as a Christmas Stocking Gift and the recipient and I were enjoying it until the outdoor sensor stopped working.

Tried contacting La Crosse Customer Service and received a spam like response telling me to troubleshoot per instructions.
We both spent too many hours trying to fix this junk and my follow up email to customer service went unanswered.

They really should have sent a replacement outdoor sensor.

I'll replace with another weather station of higher quality but it will not be La Crosse Technology.
Finally tossed the Indoor Base out in the trash today.

I see that most of the reviews are negative here, I have purchased two of these weather stations and they are absolutely amazing.

You have to leave the indoor and outdoor stations next to each other for about a week in order for them to stabilize, after that they will work just fine, both of my temperature and humidity readings are to the point of the weather network.

Certainly not plug-n-play and time-consuming to maintain during battery changes. Outside probe non-functional within 6-months (even with brand new batteries). On-line setup is time consuming and needed repeatedly. Display unit would not coordinate with wireless sender device within a year, even though I expended much time and effort in reading and rereading the manual and trouble shooting. Customer service was not helpful and warranty service was not practical (shipping cost relative to device price). Much more hassle than it could ever be worth -- a big waste of time.

I never even got as far as placing the sensor outside as I was too disappointed with its indoor performance. The temp readings are fine, but the sensor humidity is inaccurate, reading 10% higher than the main unit even when placed right next to each other. Not good enough for me. I tried emailing customer support (you can't call them), but they take days to respond and aren't very helpful. This unit's going back to Lowes.
